Problogger.com What is Griz Doing?

Question: Griz, I've read your stuff and just can't get any traffic to my blogs. I'm still on page 77 for Credit Cards.

Answer: Try this. Quit chasing highly competitive terms when you are a beginner.

Pick a topic or subject or product that is brand new. Write a post like Problogger.com. Go get 3 or 4 backlinks for it using your keyword anchor in the link on various other venues. (Hubpages, Squidoo, InfoBarrel, Today.com etc)

Check your stats (see below)

Question: Griz how do you get double indexing on Google's serps?

The very next day write a second post about the same topic and link it to the first post using the keyword in the link. (see link above).

Then go to the first post and link it to the second post using the keyword in the link.

This will give you a double index of both posts thereby occupying 2 of the 10 positions on page 1.

Voila...

If the topic is hot you will get lots of search traffic. If it isn't then so what - you have achieved legitimacy in the serps. Keep posting about new stuff and repeat this process over and over daily and a month from now you should rank well for 30 terms. In the process your site will gain authority for numerous keywords and trust rank in G as a whole. As your authority increases start picking more competitive terms and hotter subject matter. Eventually you will rank well for terms that draw traffic and have your adsense ready or a suitable affiliate product.

If you fail to hit page 1 then the keywords you have picked are for a subject that is too competitive for your means - lower your sights and search for topics that you can hit page 1 for with the minimum of links or no links at all. At this point traffic is not your concern - you want to set a track record for ranking in the serps. Gain trust and keep building links.

This is how you build an authority site.

Start another site and do the same thing all over again. Guess what - you already have 1 authority site ready to help the second. Once you have 10 authority sites... start your Credit Card campaign.

I receive these questions continually and have noticed the same questions asked in the Keyword Academy forum. Just thought a demo was in order. Perhaps Problogger.com Forum will use this as an example? Lol

Cheers

Griz

Great advice as usual Griz! I actually have a blog I created just for posting about hot topics (any topic) that I can rank for. It has no central theme so monetizing is a little tough but I can get good rankings for just about any topic (within reason) when I post on it. Great for traffic but not so much for money.

DinoEntrails said...

Haha. I am going to laugh when you outrank problogger.com for the query "problogger.com" I can't wait.

Grizzly said...

Hey Trent,

As you know an authority site may not make much money itself but is essential for aiding sites that do. I target products using the exact method outlined in the last two posts and rank the sites on top using my authority sites for links. I usually rank number 1 for a new product within an hour with a brand new blog thanks to the authority links. If I owned the New York Times I could rank number 1 for credit cards overnight with a blogspot blog. :-)

Grizzly said...

Dino - that would take a bit more linking and I`m not sure its worth the time and effort. Never say never though...

Ahhhh hahahahaha! Problogger.com is in trouble for sure, and now you've Double Indexed the problogger post too! We all know what Griz is doing and it's not only brilliant but oh-so-funny!

I learned double indexing from you Griz, and just did it again on one of my blogs this morning, and the SERP's picked it up real quick as expected. hehehe

Griz is a Rock Star!

Frank Carr said...

You never know, the NY Times might be selling links before you know it if their finances don't improve.

You've got to love those authority sites. 'Templates for Website' is one of the tougher keywords I've gone after and it looks like it's going to take a while since so many authority sites are ranking. Hopefully it will eventually get some authority status of its own. But, for now, it's getting OK long tail search traffic plus referrals. BTW, thanks for the sidebar link to it.

Broke Affilliate said...

Pure epic genius! And is it sad that I would probably be excited over being on page 77 for credit cards? lol

Dave Starr said...

Good tip on the double indexing, I am going to go implement it right now ... I have a follow-on post for an article I wrote yesterday ... sounds like an excellent method.

A quick comment on the 'blog with no central theme'. I fail to see how that makes a difference. Google does not rank blogs/web sites, they rank pages. So to my way of understanding, the fact one page is about a movie star and the next page is about the hottest new video game has no bearing on how you'll rank for searches for, say the video game. More people will search for the game itself, ad-ons, accessories etc. than will search for the movie star (they are only really looking for naked pics of her) ... but if someone happens to be selling pics of her, you can make money ... but Google only cares about the page/pages that are about her, they could care less about the 'theme' of the blog.

Grizzly said...

Grandma - nope - I'm a lousy Guitar player and can't sing worth crap...

Grizzly said...

Frank - maybe you need to send me some posts with suitable links - I have a few sites that would help the Templates out. ;-)

Btw - I'm not sure the NYT aren't selling - have you seen some of the links they have on their network sites? hmmm

Grizzly said...

Broke Affiliate - lol. Page 77 or page 7 won't translate into much traffic. Page 1 on the other hand...

Grizzly said...

Dave - Post pages are ranked for their content. The home page is ranked for the theme generated by the blog title and sitewide keywords. Every site has a central theme based on the blog title - it may be a meaningless term like "myblog.com" but that is nevertheless what G will rank it for whether the blogger intends it or not. Your point is not lost though - just wanted to mention that since most backlinks point to the home page a site should use a useful "theme" orientated keyword in the title.

Hey Griz,
What about the sandbox? How do we deal with that? I was on the front page and now I am 500 or 600.

Griz,

Awesome post. thanks for the tips.

Good stuff, ... I'd be curious to see inside those forums to know if anyone is discussing this post and the other Problogger.com post. Something tells me his forum does not draw as tight of a nit community as Court's and Vic's do.

Grizzly said...

Anon,

If you were front page and dropped 500 spots then you have likely picked up a penalty - not the sandbox. The sandbox can be overcome by getting some quality backlinks (from authority sites is the quickest route out)

If it is a penalty then you have to figure out what you did. Have you linked to a bad site? Is it just your main keyword that you lost rank for or are your long tails suffering as well? Are all your post pages lower or just your home page? Did you post about porn/sex, pharma/drugs, etc I can't really give you an answer but you know your site - did you do something that might have penalized you. (too many inbound links from a farm? Too many links from unrelated sites using identical keyword anchors etc. The possibilities are numerous - how old is the site? How long were you on the front page? Is the site still bouncing around in the serps (it could be a result of the as yet unfinished serp update in which case you just have to wait till it is over)

Needless to say I would need a lot of these questions answered to make an educated guess.

Re: Sandbox / penalty

I was on page one for a couple of weeks for a major term and long tails. Site is from April 09 so it's still new. Search engine traffic pretty much shut down. My earnings per click are still decent over $2 bucks when I get them from referral traffic (my backlinks). Almost all of my site is still indexed and my new posts are included in google within about a half hour.

A few more questions:

1. How do I know if I linked to someone bad.
2. Does google care if I offer affiliate links in the sidebar....I've got lenthy original content for my posts and I've no followed the affiliate links. For the affiliate links, I've bought domain names (.infos) to hide the affiliate links and they mask the forward.
3. I ran UAW for three days at 5 directories a day.
4. Otherwise I've linked to TKA people with a about 15-20 blog rolls. Keyword in my site title and used the link sources at TKA for my search terms.

The main term I was getting found on for my home page on page one...now my post page with that term ranks at 319.

I'm guessing it's that the site is new and I've got a lot of blog roll links that include the term but not sure.

I knew I had it right, even if I don't have any authority sites my self. Get ranked for as many keywords as possible, and eventually you are going to be able to rank for anything. Also writing a few interlinked posts with the same keywords will help. Thank you for giving me certainty about this - basically what you need is a sh*tload of content targeted to very low competition keywords at first, and eventually starting to target something with more competition.

So are you saying that it is not all about the backlinks after all?!!!?!?! ?!?!??!! You are confusing me oh master :)

I am not asking the following question for noobish reasons - to get away with as little as work as possible - but simply out of curiosity:

How fast have you achieved authority with the previously outlined method? One hundred posts? two hundred? Without authority site backlinks of course. And if you have always backed up your sites with links like that, then do you think it is achievable with few hundred posts, or do I need to get about 500 before I can start dreaming about authority?

Hi Griz,

great post again.

Little question for you or the other experienced people.
Do you use a seperate statcounter account for each site/blog you have because of a possible footprint so people can not detect all your sites.
I think I will get 4 or 5 sites per account, but was curious what you do.

Dennis

Costa said...

Good one Griz.

Wonder what's problogger doing about you on the verge of taking over the ranks for the term problogger.com.

But on a second thought, I doubt probloggers check their serps rankings nor do they care much about search traffic. They are more concern about writing quality contents so readers will come naturally.... say....in 5 years time maybe? LOL.

I just checked to see where your problogger.com "how to make money" posts are ranking on G, and your doubled indexed "pro blogger" money making posts are sitting nicely on page 1 at the 7th spot. Sweet! :)

Per Problogger.com: "What would happen if the thousands of bloggers who read Problogger each day decided to work together to improve their blogs" stopped reading Problogger and started reading "make money online" blog tips by Griz at How to Make Money Online for beginners?

Blogging beginners wanting the BEST tips to learn ways to make money don't need to join the Problogger.com forum, where beginners are actually losing money (their own) rather than making money.

The BEST place to get blog tips to help you make money blogging is NOT at problogger.com but is found reading and following the tips to make money by Griz at Make Money For Beginners, and it won't cost you a penny. :)

SAP,

This blog was set up to target my main keywords and not individual posts for Adsense optimization. Since dropping adsense I may switch the url order just to see what happens in the serp's. Haven't done it yet - waiting for the update to finish.

Btw - someone asked how do I know when the serp update ends? It is done when the total number of indexed posts for a "broad" search term returns to normal. ie. Before the update there were 182,000,000 pages indexed for the term "make money online". During the update this number has been as high as 230,000,000 and as low as 112,000,000. When the number settles back down to a stable count (usually close to the original count) the update is finished. It is close - 178,000,000 this morning. In reality it is done but all the data centers haven't stopped shuffling yet.

Grizzly said...

Anon - If you link to a bad site the results are immediate. The next time a bot visits your serp ranking will drop instantly. To find the problem go back and no-follow all the links and see if your rank returns within a few days to a week. If it does then you know you have a bad link. Then do-follow each link one at a time (you will need to make sure the bot drops by between each one) and find the one that is causing you grief and delete it all together.

Are all those blogroll links reciprocal? You folks really should use in post content links and preferably not reciprocal. 3 way linking is preferred but I don't think the blogroll is the problem as G will not penalize them - more likely ignore them.

I could write a book on linking and really would have to examine your site to see where the problem lies. It could be as simple as a google shuffle - new content ranks well for a while but drops back as other new content takes over the serp ranks. Until your site gains authority it will bounce around.

You will have to narrow it down on your own but start by examining your links as mentioned above.

Grizzly said...

Denise - no you don't have to do it right away. You can go back and re-work previous posts.

Grizzly said...

Phil - It is about backlinks. The more competitive the term the more backlinks you will need (just a few if they are authority links or a lot if they are crappy links.)

If the keyword has no competition you can rank without any backlinks. If your site builds its own authority then eventually you can rank well for more competitive terms without any backlinks (or just a few). This can get confusing so just remember this; if you are not ranking on top for any term it means that you need more targeted backlinks. Simple.

Grizzly said...

Lol - Thanks Scott. (I'm not really looking for help but won't say no...)

Grizzly said...

Ronda - double indexing should be standard as it increases your ctr from the serps and eliminates 1 competitor in the rankings. Good luck.

Grizzly said...

Gregory - nope. I'm just showing you how you can gage your own authority in the serps. Start small and grow it with terms you can dominate. You'll know your authority is growing as you dominate more competitive terms.

Grizzly said...

Dennis - I use different statcounter accounts for each network and to keep my sites manageable. I'm not worried about a footprint.

Grizzly said...

Costa - It seems Darren isn't happy. Someone posted a link to my posts in his comments and he quickly deleted it. My statcounter showed traffic from his site for about 10 minutes before he caught the link. It seems he is so concerned about his readers that he doesn't want them to find out you can make money online without spending money on the crap he sells. Lol.

Grizzly said...

Lin - Check out the sites of the noobs who leave comments on Problogger. Every site is a carbon copy, same fluff posts, no readers and no search traffic and not a one makes a dime. Griz, I just wanted to say thanks for your home tip a while back about how to make the best of our golden bear in the apple tree problem! Your idea h ad sense and was perfect to a tee. I really had wanted a solution and didn't know what to do- bears are scary!

Our son welcomed the opportunity to make some money and earn extra income.

Like an explosion, he set into action on the job. At first he tried tossing a ball into the tree to get the bear-tempting apples down. That worked for the low-hanging front nine pieces of fruit, but his baby shots didn't work for the more challenging, big ticket fruit towards the top of the tree.

None of his community friends in his network were around for him to link up with. He had no idea himself how to optimize his efforts, and he sat in our home for a long time pondering what to do and how to do it.

Finally, he took a golf club and made it his business to knock the apples from the tree like a tiger. With each stroke he was more successful. Perhaps the fact that I was paying him money helped ~LOL!~, but at any rate he'd swing, swing some more, and he clubbed that tree hard (including a hole in the bark that oozed balata from the sliced area-- I wasn't too happy about that).

All in all, though, not bad for a beginner at bear fruit abatement-- he managed to finally succeed. He earned himself sem money, and removed the apples. Hopefully the bear will no longer be all google-eyed over those round baubles, and will shop at the market instead. LOL! With the fruit gone, we hope not to seour furry visitor any more this Fall.

I appreciate your advice. Thanks again!

Blogspot has succumbed to the same problems now as Squidoo - too many spammers and hence is becoming harder to rank in G. I still use them a lot but I have the resources to back them up. They still work but you really have to be lilly white with them when starting out and it helps to have some authority links to support them. I hate to admit this but I have a fairly large stable of WP sites as well and gawd forbid - quite a few real full blown websites in the arsenal. It really has become a game of variety these days and you have to build sites with real content - I didn`t say good content - but real content and watch the keywords you target. If you pick a spam niche then this goes double.

Having said that I have found things considerably easier than a year ago as G is eliminating most of my competition who are still using methods that worked two years ago. Keep this in mind - I do not automate and hence have a lot better control on what I produce. Yes it is more work but the results are worth it and I haven`t lost a site in ages.

Hey Griz,

I think this is your shortest post ever but definitely loaded as usual.(Of course, comment will again become gigantic).

Loved the included "problogger.com" lesson :)

Grizzly said...

XEL - I kept it short so I could make some money. If the post is too long the non-readers don`t make it down to the money link. When the post is short they see the money link and bite... (A good time to remind my readers not to buy squat on here unless you ask me first - Court and Janet`s material excepted - I do recommend them)

Long time no see Xel - hope all is well with you.

Griz, I appreciate your commenting on Squidoo because I've done a couple of them but eventually forgot all about it. I use a today.com blog to build backlinks to my more important blogs, and those keyword links help a lot.

DOH! I just realized I previously said I have 3 blogs but if you include the today.com blog it means I have four. Oh well. Math wasn't my best subject in school but I make money online and my math is good enough to at least count the money I'm making ;)

Haha, yea that one took me some time -- about 5 hours. I think that counts as my biggest post so far -- close to 6k words. Maybe next post, I'll aim to tie you for 13,143 ;)

My goal each day is to pump out roughly 20 or so 400-500 word articles, so I guess I do about 10k, just not in all one post! I like the idea of bigger posts though -- makes niche sites look legit and less MFA -- but depends on how lazy I get. You can only write so much about topics you don't care for before getting the burn out.

I'm gearing up for something epic next month: 2k ezines in 2 weeks -- that's going to be one for the records. I might lose my fingers though, lol.

See you in the shed!

Actually Darren is a really nice guy. I spent some time over 'pops' with him a couple of years ago. He was genuine and very pleasant. Actually all the B5Media guys were. I guess that from his perspective, he really does believe that he is helping people. The major problem that I have with him is that he knows that the key to money for blogging is backlinks. The backlinks to his sites prove it. He is just not honest with his legion of followers that links are important. He is willing to soak them for a couple of bucks to feed them the pap that will never move them in the direction of earning money - at least not Griz style money. (If I had Griz's money, I'd burn mine to heat the house. lol)

I have some posts with double listings but never knew how it worked. Always thought it was to do with the title , Thanks :-)

Nishadha said...

Hi Griz, I have already got double indexing for a keyword I'm targeting but one's that are indexed are the home page and another relevant post but not the one I want. If I to this interlinking thing will it show since I already got double indexing ? Also If I get a double indexing but If I want the second one to appear first in the search engines what can I do ? I suppose getting some back links will do that but just wanted to know if there is a tweak that does the same.

Mark said...

I'm glad I found this site and how SEO works. But I also suspect it will continue to get harder and harder to compete with new IMers as more and more find these methods. I think it already is in my niche. Especially since you are trying to make it easier for them. I worked hard for a year to find real SEO and luckily networked to find this site in the end. Have you thought about the drawbacks of possibly loosing some of your top niches as people start to find them? There are a lot of smart people out there.

Rhys said...

Hi Griz:
Double Indexing - I checked a few of my terms, and I see that G gives me double indexing anyway.

If I Google for the keyphrases in any of my posts, they are all double listed:
E.G.
"Modify Word Press Theme
"Find Long Tailed Keywords,
"Get Listed Twice in the Top Ten serps
and so on.

I think this is because WordPress can show the same post with 2 different urls, one with the post title, and once again under the category, and then G lists them as TWO different results

Of course Ugly old Blogspot blogs may not enjoy this useful feature........

ariston | kuwait restaurants said...

Thanks Griz! Now my other blog occupied #1 & 2 slot (double indexed) in SERPs for a certain keyword, above the marketing guy who sells his own product with same keyword... lol!

Again, thanks for those awesome tip!... :)

What happened to your MMOgrizzly.com? Where is the ugly blog with a green bg? :D I saw you've removed the Adsense too?

Hey Griz,

Apologies for the boring comment name. Its a pity I'm not really busting a gut to target Make Money, but just to keep things relevant and as I haven't mentioned that old blog for ages...

Just thought I'd mention there's a nice feature with WP where you can go off at a tangent and create pages with sub-pages. Nothing earth shattering about that until you have a blog with no real direction. This feature makes it easy to set up pseudo categories each with a homepage and subpages for each topic you want to target.

Its very handy for leeching any authority the blog main page has while not being constrained by posting category labelled and dated posts.

There. An un-customarily helpful tip from me to anyone who's interested ...and its even more useful if you're building an authority site with guest posts via email... which I'm not right now, at least not with guest posts ...but may be sometime soon...

See you in the Shed ;-)

You are so conviencing its hard to resist! :-)

I have some static sites as well and Google seems to really like them. Once they get a little authority, they seem to stick. Maybe its just the topics I choose. I don't know.

I'm going to try to get double indexing with these as well.

Griz would using a subdomain work as well as blogspot blog? I've got 2-3 sites penalized and need to move them and start over :(

Dave Lopan said...

Hey Griz,

When you used "credit cards" as an example, were you saying it's hard to get on the first page because it's a freakishly competitive keyword (I'd almost be happy if I could land page 7 for a word like that), or is it because "credit cards" is a "spammy" word and you can wind up playing in the sandbox for several months?

I'm chiming in on this because I just created a niche blog focused on a longtail, low-comp credit card related keyword, and it being my first niche site, I got a little paranoid when I read your blog. I just don't want my virgin vessel to sink on her maiden voyage.

Thanks!

Alex... you gave your kitten the finger? :-)

Grizzly said...

Strathy - I'm sure he is a nice guy personally. I am just criticizing his methodology. He promotes blogging and social media as a way to make money online and quite frankly it doesn't work - he does it to sell useless "pap" as you called it to his readers. They can't duplicate his success by following his advice. I'm sure he's a great guy to have a beer with though.

Grizzly said...

Nishada - Experiment with your inter-linking and see what happens. What I showed you here always works but the order always seems to be the home page first in the serps.

Grizzly said...

Mark,

I look at competition differently. Take this niche for example - mooladays just did all the work to show us where to find new links...

Grizzly said...

Rhys,

You must still be interlinking posts properly either manually or with a plugin. Otherwise every WP user in the serps would be double indexed and they aren't. It would be useful to know exactly what you are doing.

Grizzly said...

Ariston - have you seen an increase in traffic?

Grizzly said...

Mufassa - shush - I'm making a few changes over on the Griz site and don't want anyone to know yet. :-) (No comments from the peanut gallery when you see it - oh it is pretty! lol)

Grizzly said...

Terry - thanks for that un-customary tip! And is there traffic for "Make Money Yawn"? Must have missed that one in my research... ;-)

Grizzly said...

Albert - each blog is considered a stand alone regardless of how many you have under a single account.

Grizzly said...

Denise - you are welcome. ;-)

Static sites can rank just as well as a blog. Just one of those myths started by people pushing blogs... or blogging "pap"... or how to be a better blogger "pap"...

Grizzly said...

Sue - sub-domains can rank just as well as anything else. Platforms don't make any difference to your success - backlinks do.

Grizzly said...

Dave - Credit cards are one of the most competitive niches online. If you tackle it then do what you are doing - start with long tails and work up. You will need a lot of links or a few really legit authority links to avoid the spam filters. It's the type of niche that is best tackled sideways - ie. Build a financial planning site and work CC into the mix...

So lately I have also been putting up new sites with content and will let them sit until I get another fire under my arse in a couple months.

Griz, I found myself ranking for a fairly completive keyword niche with a self hosted wp site. It's theme was pretty ugly and looked sort of like a MFA site. I don't know if my competition reported me as spam or if it was one of those niches that google does manual reviews on but either way I got totally thrown out of the index. I fixed a few problems that might have caused the issue and asked for reinclusion. It's been about a month since the site got tossed out. The weird thing is that in webmaster tools the red warning bar saying that I am in violation of quality guidelines is gone. And google is counting links to the site. Up to 1300 now. It's been counting more links for the last 2 weeks. I am still not in the index at all. Do you think this sounds like a timed penalty to you?

Thanks!

Actually I find it easy - I have a 7 year old who never stops asking questions. I just write to answer all the imaginary questions she could ask about any topic - What are Oil filters Dad? Why do we need them Dad? Are they all the same Dad? Where do you get them Dad? What colors do they come in Dad? What Equipment Needs them Dad? and on and on. Just ask a question and then write an extremely detailed answer to each one. If you are using Adsense then tweak your answers to target the ads - "The best Oil Filters I have found are abc oil filters - and lo and behold there they are over in the sidebar ads. That in a nutshell is how I write.

Dennis said...

lol Grizz....first you learn us: "to be succesfull online you need content and links" and now I need a kid too before I can be succesfull....damn.

But thanks for explaining how you can do the long posts about boring topics.
This is great advice and at the same time so simple I almost feel stupid I didn't think of it myself.
Next time I grab a piece of paper, turn off my brains, and for a couple of minutes I will write every simple or stupid question I can think of about my subject/kw's.
I think after a while it will become a sort of 2nd nature I hope.
And if that doesn't work I seriously have to think about having a girlfriend and having kids ;-)

But I guess the main problem for me,and I think a lot of other people, who make it all more difficult than it is.

I think a lot is related to self esteem. I don't mean self esteem in general, but self esteem about how this make money online model works.

When you start out your a bit insecure "how to do this" and "how to do that", instead of just putting your head down and go write posts and build links you waste to much time on small things like wordpressthemes etc etc.

When you finally make ebough money you get more secure and than there is no need any more to think a lot and read 40 blogs etc, you know it works, so then you just build your sites.
I don't know if the point I tried to make in the last paragraphs are clear, but at least I tried.

Have a nice day :)

Since then it's been closed. You don't need to join to take advantage of our methods - just develop some long term relationships with our members and they will be happy to give you a hand. I won't mention all the names but many of them are present in Court's forum at the Keyword Academy and Vic's Forum at the Affiliate Academy. You will find that if you pay things forward and help others they will find you. The new "Sistahood" is off to a good start if Lizzie is involved and those of you who read Ben's blog won't go wrong. This isn't Brain Surgery so failure isn't a major deal. You try, you learn, you get better. Eventually you figure out the short cuts and what not to do and then spend your time doing what works. Simple.

Most beginners start a site thinking it's going to be the "one" - fame and fortune here I come. I have about 200 of those perfect sites gathering dust. Every so often I hit a home run in between all the strike outs. And that is internet marketing.

Hey Griz

I know this has been discussed previously, but I noticed on a few of my websites that G will give say 10 to 20 backlinks from one place. I have heard from other's that G will only give so much link love from each ISP. But here's my comment based on my own experience and wanted to get your thoughts on this issue.

I know that G will give only so much link juice from 1 ISP as a general rule, but doesn't it really depend on the authority of that website? For example, ezine articles has tremendous authority and seems to give more backlinks. I am continuing to seek out as many backlinks from quality places as a normal business practise anyways.

If you can answer it here great and if not, I understand the reason why as well.

Make it a great day and thanks for another interesting post.

Grizzly said...

Darrell,

When it comes to links keep it simple and don't get bogged down on the math behind link juice - it really is of no consequence. To rank well in the serp's just concentrate on getting links (from anywhere) that use your targeted keyword in the link pointing to you. That is the number 1 goal. After that then look for sites with a higher PR to get links from. After that get them from relevant sites.

In other words a link using your keyword on a PR1 non-relevant site will help you more than a PR6 link on a relevant site that uses your name in the link.

The only thing that will get you ranking for a term in the serp's is having links using the keyword. You can rank number 1 with nothing but PR1 non relevant links that use your keyword. Everything better than that is gravy so just focus on keyword anchored links. Don't worry about the amount of juice each link has - that is just for PR purposes and you don't need high PR to rank well - this site was number 1 for MMO with a PR0 and is still only a PR2.

Keep it simple.

Grizzy, I add a y to everyone's name. It's my thing. Ask Joshy =).

Yes that was me on Facebook, tho I'm kinda like you and don't use it much. Mainly to talk to my 13 year old niece.

"kk" in swedish means knullkompis basically um.. **ckbuddy. Ahem.

Does Problogger ever deign to respond post? or any of his fan ghouls?

Hi Griz, with regards to my page being de-indexed, I used the anchor text of the keyword I'm targeting so I'm now wondering if I've overdid it with the same anchor text. It was ranking well on the first page before but it's completely gone. It's still showing up in my google webmaster account as a page with links pointing to it...hmm perhaps it'll come back after the next reshuffle?

it was my understanding that receiving links is never a bad thing, (I think via brad callen's seo lessons) now from what you said in the comments about listening to ben, (it may have been the other problogger post) it seems as if receiving links is important. Basically the point you made seemed to be that it is better to get links from only a few high quality "authority sites"

What if I start a site, I rank #1, and someone who's #2 spams the heck out of my site with low quality links, including irrelevent anchor texts. If my "money" sites should only have a few quality links, whats to stop everyone from spamming the #1 until it's no longer #1 from all the low quality links?

Or is it more about having multiple authority sites that you can use for a wider variety of keywords rather than just using them on "money sites" that are specific to 1 or 2 keywords?

Zane,

Blogger is still useful and will rank well. They are just scrutinized more these days because of all the spam blogs on it. Create legit sites and stay clear of spam niches and you will be fine.

Alex,

Lol - it's not the Y - where is my L?

Alex- if I weren't so lazy about posting, I'd totally join up to do a group blog!

Lis- I would love to see Griz as an honorary chick, but I think his initiation should be to watch at least one chick flick straight through. :-)

Mike SEO,

Let's clear this up.

Nobody can harm you by sending you bad links.

G either indexes links or ignores them. You can not spam a competitor with bad links hoping to screw them in the serp's. This is the official stance of Google.

Un-officially yes you can screw people if you really know how to do it - but - in most cases you only screw their PR and not serp ranking. I will never discuss how this is done and only mention it because someone will come on here and say you can. Yes - but it is very hard to do and few people would know how.

It is not better to "Only" get links from high authority sites. If you can great as you won't need as many links but it is best to just get links that use your keyword in the anchor. (as mentioned above in a comment). If the authority links don't use your keyword then they are useless except for giving you a better PR. Just remember that high PR does not get you ranked in the serp's. If in doubt why is my PR2 site on top of the serp's for all the MMO terms and Problogger's PR6 site is on page 7?

Ranking in the serp's comes down to who has the most keyword anchored links. Mooladays went out and got 57 keyword anchored edu links - authority links using his keyword and presto - top ranking in 6 months.

Problogger has thousands of authority links but very few use any useful keywords in the anchors and hence he ranks poorly.

Nobody can spam your site with low quality links and do any harm - the links will either help you (if they use your anchor) or do nothing for you. (if they don't use your anchor)

If they send you too many all using the same anchor G will just ignore them as they are all likely going to come from one or two C class IP's. If they came from 100's of different C-Class IP's then G will think they are legit and you will rise in the serp's. If someone had the ability to spam you with 100's of legit links then they should just use them for themselves. If they are doing it from a few IP's then they are wasting their time.

In short - lol - don't worry about what others are doing. If you do see something funny happening then just report the URL's to G and relax. G won't do squat as the algo will have disregarded the links anyway but you will feel better anyway. :-)

Well Griz, if your looking for another person to make an "example" of...let me know ahead of time, cause ive got a few blog's id like to "spam" your way LOL

Also, why don't they ever show naked guys in movies. Even in chick flicks. Hell, they can still be holding guns & blowing things up. Oh wait, that wouldn't be hot thats just wrong. Things jiggling that i dont wanna see jiggle.

Anyway lol Guys get all the TnA and we get....a little butt shot here and there. SHOW US THE GOODS!!! We get the occasional quick glimpse but thats it. LAME.

BTW Grizz...just remember when you are in Africa - you can always eat the pizza without getting sick, anything else you take your chances :)

Nairobi, Kenya has a GREAT golf resort that I have stayed at previously...The Windsor. You could see Africa and play golf all at the same time...now that is a vacation!

I also made a video for you, but so I don't get caught in your spam filter, I sent another email with the link =P

Ian said...

@DinoEntrails no he's done with me! The de-indexing of my page was of course nothing to do with the double post and down to me being an amateur at this game! A good lesson learned today...now to rebuild my site...

Fay said...

I'm not 100% sure but I think I read something at Problogger about it being the job of the person doing the blogging to "keep the comments on track" maybe it was here I dunno all you guru's get mixed up in my head. I'm feeling a little enabling going on with the distrackingness...nontrackingness... whatever of this whole line of commenting. :-)

If you guys would switch to talking about goats I'd have a something to put in the URL field. Just a suggestion.

&Grizz ("It would be useful to know exactly what you are doing.")

Yep, I agree, as far as I can see I get ALL my post prime keywords double listed because I take my own advice on how to Get Listed Twice. I don't always hit the top ten, some keywords are TOO competitive, but always seem to achieve the double indexing.

The other factor seems to be the Google(WordPress) habit of displaying the one set of content under different URLs, like a SERP can show as it's own URL, or under category, or via a tag, or under archives.

I notice too that I usually get the + sign under the double listings, and when that is expanded various other URL combinations appear too, so a surfer could then find all ten spots are mine.

I did some checking and the SERP's for my last 6 posts on three different blogs are ALL double indexed. E.G. -

Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time.

CashCrate is another program similar to Project Payday and they do accept people world wide - it's free to join.

For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.

A Little Heart to Heart

If you have made it this far down the page then I assume you might just be serious about learning how to make a real sustainable living online - as opposed to the thousands of visitors I see daily looking for that "get rich quick" miracle that really doesn't happen without a winning lottery ticket.

You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?

If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.

This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.

Cheers

Griz
