One of the methods I employ for both SEO and Adsense optimization is keeping things simple. Simple text based sites that make the Adsense and Google bots jobs easy to navigate and index my sites for the Keywords I am targeting. Fancy complex sites are wonderful if your goal is to attract readers. Thanks to the likes of Darren Rowse (of Problogger fame) many bloggers assume that having readers and making money go hand in hand. If you are selling ads then having a lot of readers will help. If you are trying to sell product or use CPC programs like Adsense then you will find that readers are not going to buy anything from you or click your ads. You need search engine traffic for that to happen as they are the type of visitor that is actively looking for something - info or a product - and if you present them with what they seek they will buy or click. Moreover they aren't going to search around on a fancy complex site hoping to find what they want. If the answer is right in front of their face they click. If not they leave and look elsewhere.
This is why keeping things simple pays off when using adsense. A simple plain and boring site may turn off readers but it allows search visitors to see your money links or ads the moment they hit your page. Buyers don't want to sift through posts or a page full of beautiful photos and widgets looking for the item they seek. If the item is right in front of them when the hit your site they will click or buy it and never remember your site at all. You don't care - the site has done it's job. It made you money.
Over the past year I have seen dozens of themes developed that are based on my truly ugly theme that you are looking at right now. The nice thing about Blogger is that it is pretty ugly right out of the box and is easy to modify without any technical skills. WP or WordPress blogs are a different matter as you need some technical knowledge in order to use and modify WP themes. I don't have that knowledge as all my WP friends can attest to. I use Blogger because I am a Techno Challenged dinosaur and my brain is full - I have no room to learn anything else and don't own a cell phone because my eyes glassed over the last time someone tried to explain how to add a phone number into the memory. (True - I may be the only person left in the developed world without a cell phone!) The good news is that you can still do really well online if you are a techno dunce like me. You just need a few friends to help out when things cross over the line between slapping out content (I call it Typing - if you are under 30 you probably call it Data Entry) and setting up a WP blog.
Unfortunately many of my readers don't fully comprehend the limits of my technical inabilities and constantly email me asking questions regarding their themes - specifically how to modify their wordpress themes to duplicate my simple is better Blogger approach. To this end I asked an old friend of mine to intervene and lend a hand as he modifies WP themes for a living. I asked Costa to write up a simple post so that I could refer my readers to his site and of course he didn't do that because he knows me too well. Instead he wrote the following Griz length post just to tell you all to head over to his site if you need help modifying your themes... (I have trained you folks too well!) Lol
Here is Costa's post - his link is at the bottom and he has been a great friend to our community over the years and will go out of his way to help you. Take him up on it!
When you start a blog for the sole purpose of making money online or anything else for that matter, the first thing that faces you is your blog’s theme. Though MMO gurus don’t specifically tell you that the looks of your blog plays a part in your earnings, many Internet Marketers have discovered that a blog or a site’s layout, the color and the fonts does play an important part in increasing click-through and conversion rates. If your theme is right, and by that does not mean beautiful, you can and will make more money online.
Lots of bloggers have the misconception that if they make up their blog to be fancy, unique and beautiful, they will attract readers to come in droves and in turn make lots of money. Purist, like my friend Grizz here, has other ideas. They want a simple, boring and a blog theme that is on the brink of being plain ugly. They will tell you that an ugly looking theme makes the most money and they have good reasons to believe so.
A beautiful and pleasant looking theme keeps your readers at your site for a longer time, something that all bloggers yearn for. They want their readers reading everything they wrote and then maybe stay on to make a comment or two. After that, they reluctantly leave, waiting anxiously for your next update so they can come back to enjoy the pleasant surroundings. Some do not wait, they come back twice a day just to drool over that beautiful theme that you are using. Well and good. You have garnered yourself a bunch of loyal followers. Sick and bad. They will not be clicking on anything. Be it an affiliate link or an Adsense Ad. Their eyes are all over the beautiful Theme to take note of anything else.
A secret not much openly mentioned by pure Adsense masters like Grizz is they hate blog stragglers. People who comes to their blog and refuse to leave. Especially so if it is their money making sites. So they devise ways chase them away as quick as possible. One of the many ways is to make their blogs look as ugly and as boring as they possibly can. If there is a way to make their Adsense blogs smells bad, I definitely think they will do it.
Imagine yourself accidentally dropping into a sewerage pit. Your natural and instinctive reaction will be to stretch out your arms to hold on to something so you can get out as fast as possible. In the same sense and with the same reaction, anyone who stumbles into a boring blog or smelly one if there is a possibility, the first thing that comes to mind is to look for the fastest and the nearest exit point. Where is the fastest and nearest exit? Your ads, of course. It only takes one click. Any thing else will take at least two. Think about it.
There are of course many other creative ways make visitors to your money sites want to leave as soon as possible. Some sets their theme’s background to a very dark color and set their fonts just slightly brighter so it is on the verge of being illegible. Then their Ads are shown in bright neon colors shining the way out for their visitors. Just like the “EXIT” sign inside the cinema. Let your imagination run wild and you will come up with a dozen ways to make your visitors want to leave by clicking your Ads.
All this theme manipulations will however come to naught if you cannot attract any visitors to come drop by. We all know that organic traffic is the best paying traffic. To attract organic traffic, other than all the tips that Grizz has taught us here, we will also need what some call a SEO Theme. Basically, most WordPress Themes are already very well optimized for Search Engines but there is still room for improvements. Proper use of tags, Meta descriptions and so on can improve the Themes visibility and provide better nourishment for Google bots. There are tons of free tutorials out there that reach you just how to do that.
By having to do all this to improve your blog’s income, don’t you think it is a nessicity to know how to customize your Theme? You can’t possibly employ someone to do it for you each time you start money making site and using the same theme on all your sites leaves a footprint as big as Bigfoot’s for people to exploit, not to mention our friendly neighborhood giant, Big Daddy G. Once he finds out you are running an empire of Adsense blogs with the same look and design to chase away visitors, he will fry you. So do yourself a small favor. Visit my site and learn some basic Theme Modification Tips so you can use a different Theme for each of your money making sites.
Thanks Costa.
In my attempt to build up our community please let me know if you have something useful to help us all make money online. I will be more than happy to lend a hand getting your message out. If it benefits you - no problem but make sure it benefits us all. (A new forex robot will not cut the mustard.)
Cheers

Customizing Your Blog Theme To Make More Money Online
Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home
I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.
I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday
Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time.
CashCrate is another program similar to Project Payday and they do accept people world wide - it's free to join.
For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.
A Little Heart to Heart
You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?
If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.
This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.
Cheers

Griz, Over the year I've learned a lot by reading your blogs and people you have referred to.
You"re not the only person without a cellphone. I was a cellphone addict previously and now I haven't had a cellphone for the last 5 years.
I agree that a simple and plain looking site is always better than a complex, beautiful looking site in terms of SEO and making money online.
I am always impressed by your online knowledge and practices.
Thanks
Oh no. I'm a B.S. (blog straggler)!
Good one, Costa.

Excellent post! One of the best overviews I have ever read of what makes an effective Adsense page. The only part that I might call into question is the thought that one should not use the same theme on all your site pages. At least not for the reason given.
If one's CTR (click through) is great using a given ugly theme I say use it throughout. There are so many instances of people using the same themes all over the place (especially Wordpress themes) that there is no way Google will penalize people just because a whole bunch of them (or one individual) uses the same theme.
A more rational basis for using different themes might be because different target markets respond to Ads differently and it may thus be good to change the look and feel of an Adsense ad to cater to different markets better.
But...I don't think I would be too concerned about a Google slap just because one is using the same high CTR producing them all over the place.

Costa.
Super post! Here I was just about to sign up for some paid themes just because they were so cool to look at.
You are so right about plain themes being used for money sites.
Even though some of my blogs are designed just to be social, because it does get lonesome working online with no one to bounce ideas off of. Social blogging does not make me money.
I was just at Blogigs guess I will go back.
Thanks Costa and Grizz!
This guy made a Wordpress theme that mimics the Grizz ugly blogger theme. I use it on one of my sites.
Grizzly sniper Wordpress theme
Grizz, it's so reassuring to know that someone who is technologically challenged like me, can still be as successful as you are.
And thanks to you and Costa for this post. I've recently been looking for more SEO-friendly wordpress themes.
Oh, and sorry, Costa...but your post was so useful and funny that I will definitely be straggling on your blog from now on!
As PT Barnum would put it, "This Way To Egress"
One thing to remember about plain themes is that they're often more readable to people with vision problems or to those using mobile devices. And plain text on a black background uses less power than a lot of graphics, making your site 'green' friendly. Having a plain theme is a public service.
Thesis theme is excellent for WP sites, which main goal is making money. I use it on all my blogs.
But it does cost money, unfortunately.
Hey Grizz. WWW3Schools is a great site for anyone in the community that would like to learn how to perform basic HTML, CSS, javascript, and PHP modifications. They provide a TON of free tutorials.
The funny thing is that I was reading Costa's site just yesterday after stumbling across it from a link on one of our inner circle friends blogs. Don't remember which one. There are a lot of good tips and themes there.
I like your "purist" ideas the best Grizz because I'm a horrble writer and don't know squat about the stuff I write about so I'm a bit embarresd if they do stay and read. God for bid they ask a question. For the social type sites I'm going into 50/50 partnerships with people that are passionate about what they write about. They get a full time techy and I get informed content. I think it might work out
I have a few websites which I intend to "give to the community" similar to posturown.com but not yet the same. The issue here is that I will require people to post articles without links to their sites every now and then - to give the website more value and to make it look less like a linking factory. And I also expect people to do backlinks on their posts. If you could take a look on one of my sites and see if it is set up okay I would be glad to let people join and start publishing. If this is done right we could have an authority website to use for our purposes in a while.
Tthat is is anyone is willing to write articles without always giving a backlink on their website :D My contact details can be found from my website which can be found through the link in my name.
First up, great post Griz & Costa. I've already fought this theme battle, but for many of your readers this will be a great help. Justins theme (linked above; Grizzly Sniper) is a good one.
Another good one is called veryplaintxt. Looks remarkably similar to this blog. I use it one of my blogs, and have seen about a 4.5% average CTR (adsense only) for the year. Not a huge amount of money as traffic is low but pretty good.
I wouldn't even get a cell phone. The jury is still out on whether or not they increase risk of brain cancer.
Hey Grizz, needed to make a correction to my last comment. The name of the site that has all of the tutorials on it is W3Schools.
Cheers.
Good article and the gospel according to what we have learned so far (simple works). The only problem I have is that if we can create sites with a 30% adsense click through rate should we really look for another theme.
We ain´t making $1000´s a day but a steady $100 a day is happening and going ever upwards (thanks to what I learnt here, thanks Grizz) and what I know for sure is that simple themes with adsense on the left in a div wrap wins hands down, especially if the site has nothing else but text above the fold.
We unfortunaltely have sites that get 500 or so visitors a day and get nearly zero in adsense because they look too nice (good for backlinks)but a plain blog that screams bright blue linky links gets 30% of visitors clicking on ads or on affiliate links.
Sad but true, nasty works every time (at least for our sites), hey, just a year old internet marketers experience (who earnt sod all for the first six months until Grizz showed him how wrong he was doing it all), you know we loves ya baby!
Simple really does work and we have found from experience that subscribers really don´t cut the mustard if you want the cash not the comments.
What the heck - I'm watching Tiger win the Tour Championship and you folks are sending in comments!!! Sheesh do I not have a single Golf Fan??? Lol
I'll be back later and Costa is probably still sleeping on his side of the planet. (Don't send in any live Golf scores either as I am watching a taped round and only on the 12th hole) :-)
Be back soon.
All I can say is that Costa is a top notch internet marketer and if it matters, I give him my full endorsement. If any of you are looking to get help customizing your wordpress theme, he is the guy.
AL
Golf? Come on Grizz, we're trying to make money here - or learning too anyway!
Just joking, great post as usual man. But a quick question, though, I am a "blog straggler" (apologies by the way) and I'm thinking that you want to eradicate the 'stragglers' so that you dont have to moderate comments and spend more time watching/playing golf!!! Is this true Mr Grizzy Bear???
Ugly works, and if you read, people run away from ugly, hopefully by clicking AdSense. Ugly isn't the objective. Traffic is the objective.
My traffic is 85-90% search engine traffic. The problem is that my content keeps them there and doesn't scare them away as I intended. So "Beginner On Line", you actually have an edge on me by not knowing what you're writing about. I have a couple of blogs like that but they're floating around (Haven't worked on them yet).
My main blog needs monetization work. It's sitting at #2 on G for the main keywords and making squat in AdSense because people actually read it. Where did I go wrong?
Hey Grizz & Costa,
Great information as usual.
I pride myself on being able to create butt-ugly blogs too, but I'm in the process of reworking all my sites so that hopefully I can get some of that 'who-in-the-world-told-this-fool-she-could-create-a-website' traffic:D
Hi Griz,
Although I'd already own a couple of WP sites, I still like my ugly blogs and still in-love with my untouch-screen cellphone. :D
Thanks to you and Costa for another great Adsense tip.
That was fast Buddy. LOL. And you are right, I was pigging out when all the action was going on here.
Thanks for all the compliments guys! It is refreahing to see these kind of response to something I wrote. I have become so used to post without a single commenst in my own site. LOL!!
I don't write much of these stuffs at blogigs as it's a blog for "bloggers" if you know what I mean. They want "looks and profesionalism" so I give them what they want.
But for sure there are tips on how to mod your themes and with those tips, you might have an easier time changing your sites's colors and fonts to make it as boring as you possibly want. Or if you have a social or falgship blog, make it as attractive as you like. Works either way.
Hope to catch more of you guys over there making constructive comments like this. Sure adds a lot of juice to the original post.
Thanks again. Grizz and everybody else.
And buddy, if it is any consolation, I too, have been without a cell phone for the past 10 years.
LOL!!!
Stay Healthy, guys!
God Bless.
I am interested in Costa's anchor text selection for this post, seems to me to be a poor anchor to target....I can't even find a keyword research tool that suggests it has any traffic at all! Anyone know why he went for "Theme Modification Tips" ??
Some very nice tips , I guess blogspot blogs are ugly anyway so all I have to do now is getting traffic
Griz,
Thanks for the post. I have a cell phone, but only cause my wife makes me for emergencies. I average one call on it a month. I have to ask her how to get any messages, so you are not alone.
@ Simon,
LOL.
I did not research and I did not consider the SEO aspect of that anchor to gain any organic traffic. It was just a phrase in the post that I picked out after writing which suited the topic of the post and the purpose of the blog that it is linking to.
And for that matter, all the post topics in blogigs was never researched at all when it was written. If I was to do that, I will die of stress. :-) But if you do, I doubt you will find any traffic for the most of the keywords used in my post's titles. Yet it gets searched.
No doubt it is important, but don't get over paranoid about anchor text and using your keyword research tool. If you do that, you will be spending 3/4 of your time pondering if you should be posting something which you should have posted initially and maybe got some hits from the "broad" side.
JFYI, I get lots of hits for phrases like "how to modify my wordpress theme" or "how to modify my theme's sidebar colors" or "modify my blog's background" so on and so forth.
That, my friend, are the hits you get for a blog that has authority on Theme Modifications and that, my friend, is what I am trying to build on.
I don't use a cell phone because I don't need one.
I'll answer my previous question. My content is too good, so they stay. That's a problem that must be addressed.
I have a cell phone, but I haven't used it for around 6 months. I'm sure it's in the house somewhere though.
Am I noticing a trend? Aha! The real secret to making money online is to not use a cell phone!
I knew I'd crack the code sooner or later.
Tracey :)
Sorry, I haven't been on for a while, but I love Griz and all his help here ... What is a wordpress "theme"? I'm kind of lost here. I really am a beginner. I want to start my first site and I want it to have the best chance of making money.
In other advice sites, they say I have to have a site with brilliant content, giving readers my expertise. I'm not an expert in anything particular, so I like this idea of not concentrating so much on the content ... if you get my meaning.
So again, what is a WP "theme"? And what is this "profile" I'm required to choose before posting my comment? I don't understand ...
Hey Griz, why don't you use Adsense in this blog anymore? just curious
Hey Costa, thanks for the response , I do get caught up in the SEo side of things too much sometimes. :)
Ana
I am trying to avoid work for a while so will explain. When you buy a domain name you install wordpress to use it as a blog. The theme is just the way it looks. There are millions of them to choose from and each looks different and has different things incorporated in it so they all work slightly differently.
The best thing if you are totally lost is to go to blogger.com and register and get a totally free blogger blog for whatever name you want the site to be called. You can then choose from some simple layouts that you can change whenever you feel like it without having to understand it at all. The way the site looks is basically the theme. This is by far the easiest way to set up a site.
As for content, it really depends on how you wish to make money. If it is with adsense then you don´t really want to answer in your blog post the reason why the visitor came to your site. For selling affiliate products or especially items from sites like Amazon then I find that sales increase if you actually write much better and more useful content. Others will disagree I am sure.
When trying to sell actual products via links then you are of course answering the question of the visitor by providing a link to the thing they were searching for (whether they new it or not).
The profile is simply a blogger profile that many set up on their blogger account. I don´t use it. If you really are new to all this then set up a blogger account. It is really easy. My Mum is even doing a few sites, she is mid sixties and has no clue what she is really doing but is still making some money and loves how easy it is to write on blogger.
Sign up for blogger and if you want to sell products then use the amazon affiliate program. They provide you with code to put links on your site so all you need to know how to do is copy and paste.
MOST IMPORTANTLY JUST GET ON WITH IT.
If you don´t have a site then you make nothing. Set up loads of blogger blogs and go therough them all writing content as often as you can. Soem will work and make money and some won´t. None will make money if you don´t start them. Don´t worry about failing.
Everyone can make money online of they stick at it. The more time you spend the more money you make.
Enough free content for Grizz, if off to make my own. Sunday afternoon and i´m writing about stupid stuff I couldn´t care less about. THIS IS THE REALITY.
Yeah I agree your theme is important. I also agree that it can be easy to get too caught up in other stuff and not doing enough to actually make a good earning blog. Thanks for the great article.
Hey Costa, did I miss something here? the above link is to your home page, and it took me some time to find the /simple-modifications-for-your-wordpress-theme/ post. I feel you need a focus for follow-on discussion/comments? Somewhere we can actually discuss your methods......
Regards - Rhys
:-D
Very nice comment Dave. I agree.
Also, I just noticed that google arrived at my site 4 different times in the last hour or so, and every time it was a different data center(I think it is callled a data center, it was just 4 different locations:Cali, Florida, Kansas, and Kentucky) Is that normal? Usually I only get the California one. Sorry if it is a very noobish question.
Also, I think that I remember seeing a post or comment somewhere saying not to put adsense blocks above all of your content, or make sure that you have something above adsense or something! I can not remember at all, but is it OK to have adsense right under the title and have almost no content showing?
And Grizz, I e-mailed you about the link-building programs like you asked in the last post. Just letting you know, I bet that it is already buried under the hundreds of e-mails you get.
@ Rhys,
But now the whole blog is about what it is. LOL.
@Costa, yep I got that, I'm suggesting you need a specific landing place from THIS post so we can all get stuck in to you as well ;-)
Themes can be tricky but the worst thing is not just sticking with one. Keep it simple and then get on with the actual typing.
I could lose hours on 'widget placement' and 'redocration' so have to keep things simple and force myself to stay with my original (okay 3rd and final) choices.
Ugly is good, after all I don't need to spend too much time reading my blogs either!
Com'on Griz, you don't have a cell phone??? Are you someone who is accompanied always by a beautiful personal secretary.
Griz; Could you please look at my blog and give me some insight on the look (if it is not simply enough etc.)After searching Mortgage issues, I do understand completely what you stated yesterday. I guess I like a challenge. I am going to do more blogs, but as you know, it takes time. **question, what URL am I suppose to input on the post page under the title. Are yyou laughing? I guess that is dump but do I put my current URL there? I changed the options and did not have this initially. Sorry I am dense about a lot of this.
I forgot to give you my URL. http://mortgagefacts-u-need@blogspot.com
I know you have so much to do and I really hate to bother you but thank you in advance for your expertise and your willingness to help others. You are a wonderful example.
Thanks again
Linda
I agree with you, simple looks authentic. More of fancy sites or blogs seems to be spam or fraud. However, sites with simple presentation of content give it a trust worthy look.
