Okay this has been brewing for a while and against all my powers of restraint I just have to ask - what exactly is a better blogger?
Really.
I'm one of Darren Rowse's 121,000 RSS readers and hate to admit it. Did I say "reader" - I should have said I get his daily Post Title sent to my inbox and then two seconds later I delete it. Today I actually clicked through to his blog just to read the 121,000 comments he must get from his "riveting" posts or in this case his "guest" poster; some fella called Seth Waite who must have stayed up all night in the throws of ecstasy, just waiting for Darren to publish his eye opening work entitled "Forget the Fatal Flaws of Blogging". Thank GAWD I read it - now I know that I have to overcome the two things that have been holding me back - WISDOM and Effort!
CheeeeeRiiiiiist - Darren must want to put a gun to his head. Imagine starting a blog about blogging, somehow attaining an audience for such an inane topic and then having to barf out a fluff post everyday to keep the masses happy. Turns out I'm not the only one who deletes his daily updates unread - apparently 120,995 or so other twits like me also keep the subscription but never read a word. All the posts I checked managed to draw 50 comments or so which sucks given the vast army of subscribers. Those who do comment are nothing more than the usual ass lickers and bone heads you'll find spewing crap on other A list sites.
I don't blame Rowse of course - he's just trying to make a buck and why not, by cashing in on the advertisers who think they are going to make money from his readers. The thing is - every post is as mind numbing as the last - "Some arbitrary number of days to be a better blogger" which consist of lists of horseshit items like the following;
(Keep in mind that Rowse claims his blogging tips are to help you make money online - check his byline "Blog Tips to help you make money blogging")
I present Darren Rowse's Problogger's tips (with full link credit) with my own version in bold.
1. Giving up too early - blogs take time to take off. DOH
2. Putting off starting a blog - waiting until everything is just right before launching can mean you never do it. Uh Doh again
3. Echoing what everyone else is talking about - say something unique and share your opinion. Haven't I heard this a thousand times already!
4. Not blogging on your own domain - I know some swear by using hosted blogs but if you want ultimate control of your blog it is best to do it on your own domain and hosting. Hehe - Yup - no one could possibly be successful using a free host...
5. Irregular Posting - you don’t have to post every day but try to establish a regular rhythm of posting. Oops really - regular posting matters huh? Shit...
6. Being too apologetic - ’sorry I haven’t written for a while’ can end up being the most common type of post on a blog - yes apologize if you’ve messed up but don’t be too hard on yourself - keep investing your time into building your blog up rather than highlighting it’s problems. Gee sorry I haven't been posting for a while... Why did I gain 1800 subscribers over the last 3 months with only 3 posts?
7. Focusing more upon Quick Traffic than Loyal Readers - there’s nothing wrong with a big rush of traffic from social media or another blog - but just as important as that is building reader loyalty. Sometimes growing one reader at a time is more fruitful than getting spikes of traffic that never returns. Yah - or maybe it's better to just get search engine traffic and make money instead...
8. Clutter - too many buttons, widgets, navigation elements. What difference does it make if no one ever clicks through from their email or feedreader?
9. Great Posts but Terrible Titles - don’t short change yourself by investing hours into writing great content only to slap a mediocre headline/title onto it. Yah, Careful or you may never get a reader because your post titles only attract targeted search traffic...
10. Not Defining a Topic - the most successful blogs have a well defined topic/niche (or they target a certain demographic) Holy Crap - he actually got one right but not sure how he defines a topic using "Snappy Post Titles"
11. Choosing a Topic you have no Interest in - for your blog to be successful you’ll need to blog regularly on your topic for years - if you want to sustain it choose something you have an interest in or love for or you’ll run out of steam. So why are all my 10 post sites targeting acne and weightloss still making money years after I lost interest in them? Wait - I never had an interest in them.
12. Too many Ads - I don’t have a problem with ads on a blog from Day #1 but when they overpower the content and push it down the page too far they hurt your chances of building a loyal readership. Yah - readers hate it but they make money from the search visitors. I hate it when people don't read my crap and just click ads...
13. Being too Insular/Expecting Readers to come to You - many bloggers starting out fail to realize that the more you put yourself out there and interact with other bloggers the more chance you have of being read. So get out and spam Darren's comments and make yourself known or write a fluff post on his blog telling people they need "Wisdom and Effort" - I bet Seth is rolling in cash today.
14. Blogging about Making Money Blogging (as a first blog) - I’ve lost count of how many bloggers I’ve seen start blogs on the topic of blogging for money when they’ve never made money blogging. Start with something you know. True I guess unless you plan on outranking everyone in the niche... hehe.
15. Not Being Useful - blogs that meet needs and solve problems are blogs that people will keep coming back to and which they’ll spread news of to their network. Like this post is useful for beginners to stop wasting time reading Problogger.
16. Writing for Search Engines Before Humans - you can always tell when a blogger discovers Search Engine Optimization for the first time. Suddenly titles don’t make sense, keywords appear in posts for no real reason, links to other pages on the blog that are irrelevant to the post keep being used. Learn SEO - but keep your readers as your #1 priority. Hahaha - or just dominate the serps and learn that readers don't click ads or buy crap.
17. Becoming a Stats-a-holic - the lure of checking your stats is understandable and common to new (and older) bloggers - but it can become an unhealthy obsession that leads to distraction and depression. I can't imagine how depressing it is to see a stat like 121k of RSS subscribers and only 35 comments on your post...
18. Link Baiting with Personal Attack - taking pot shots at other bloggers might get you some quick traffic - but hate breeds hate and the type of readers you attract and the culture it’ll breed on your blog could come back to bite you. Plus you’ll get a reputation that you might not want to live with. I can live with it...
19. Not Knowing Why You’re Blogging - while most of us don’t really know what we’re doing at the start - the faster you can work out what the purpose of your blog is the sooner you’ll start moving toward achieving that purpose. The sooner you realize that all your posts are inane fluff the better - just get those RSS subscribers and the advertisers will line up. Or quit being a blogger and become an internet marketer.
20. Not Selling Yourself - one thing I don’t think many bloggers get is the power of blogs to sell yourself as a blogger. There’s nothing wrong with monetizing a blog with ads - but maybe a better long term strategy is to use a blog to advertise who you are and what you can offer readers. You could offer your readers a list like this while telling people you don't like to publicize yourself like Darren's post publicizing himself... "Since launching 31 Days to Build a Better Blog Workbook there have been many reviews written by other bloggers of the resource. I’ve not really linked up to too many of them as I’m naturally a little shy about promoting my own work - but today was challenged by another blogger to step out of my comfort zone a little and share some of the testimonies"
21. Thinking You Have to Know it All - one of the best things about blogs is that they’re a great medium for involving your readers in the process of learning. Leave space for others to interact, share what they know and contribute. Apparently I do everything you shouldn't do according to Darren Rowse which means I definitely don't know it all - whew at least I got that one right...
Now while I am having a little fun at Darren's expense I don't blame him for all the crap he spews - he has to come up with something everyday and the fact is there is only one thing you need to be a better blogger - be interesting. If people find you interesting you will develop readers just by word of mouth. It may take a while but it will happen. Vic developed an audience in a heart beat because he was fun to read while he was posting on Blogger Unleashed. Ben is interesting and has become a favorite in a short time on his site Make Money Online with SEO. My real point however, and it has always been the same, is that if you are a beginner trying to make money online you will be wasting your time reading any advice given out by the A-List bloggers. They are bloggers and while they make money due to their popularity they do not give advice on how to make money online if you are not a popular blogger. Telling people to become a popular blogger is not a recipe for success. Spend your time learning SEO, Internet marketing and how to build sites that can convert search traffic into buyers and you will be miles ahead of the Bloggers. I started this blog long after Rowse was a popular blogger and while I don't have his fame I can assure you I make more money than he does. From free hosted blogs no less and the reason is simple - I get search traffic by the ton looking for what I have to offer.
My readers have heard this before but this post is really for the 5000 or so people who dropped in from the search engines today. There are three camps in the "Make Money Online" racket and the sooner you get them straight the better.
Camp 1 - the Bloggers. Also known as the A-list. This is Darren Rowse's camp and if you find any site with links pointing to him or John Chow, Shoemoney, Copy Blogger, Yaro etc then do yourself a favor and run. You will piss away your time trying to be another A-Lister and fail. Read Costa's take on this; Are you Still Dreaming of Being a Famous Blogger
Camp 2 - the Product Pimps. Also known as the list marketers. I won't bother with the many names suffice to say these people make money selling crap using email lists and I'm sure your inbox is already full of them. They hang out on forums like Warrior and Digital Point and exist to make money off of you. They have never produced anything that will enable you to make money yourself. Do not waste your time on those forums - nothing but useless advice from people who have never made a dime online.
Camp 3 - the Internet Marketers. This is the far end of the pool and to date very few of them have come forward as they really do make money online and don't for obvious reasons spend time telling others how they do it. Aside from myself and Vic and Ben as mentioned above, there is Courtney Tuttle who gives no nonsense advice on his blogs and offers the best paid course online with the Keyword Academy Coaching program. Over the years I have urged a lot of otherwise quiet Internet Marketers to come forward and you can find a number of them in my sidebar. The common denominator is that we understand SEO and make money from the search engines and not from readers. All the info you need to make a living online is freely given by us as we are not competing with each other selling the latest crap ebook to bloggers. We don't target bloggers - we target civilians and provide targeted info to the people actively searching for it online. Our methods worked 5 years ago and still work today and you don't have to waste time with dumb ass things like Twitter, Facebook, Stumbleupon or any of the other time sucking social network sites.
I get a dozen emails a day asking "how to make money online?" - the answer is to start reading this blog, or Vic's, or Ben's or spend a dollar and sign up with Court. If you really want to make money then get off your ass, read the right stuff and run like hell if someone tries to tell you how to be a better blogger!
I tee off in an hour...
Cheers
Griz

Be a Better Blogger? WTF??
Labels: Darren Rowse, Internet Marketing, Problogger
Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home
I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.
I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday
Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time.
CashCrate is another program similar to Project Payday and they do accept people world wide - it's free to join.
For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.
A Little Heart to Heart
You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?
If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.
This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.
Cheers
Griz

THough you are cent percent correct with some points, i am the first one to comment in your blog
Only a "cent" correct? Damn...
Yes Grizz.Darren Rowse stop posting on his blog.before throw some harsh comments i want to tell this thing:
Darren Rowse is a very nice guy - he wants to help other bloggers blog better.Good.But does he help in the way he should?HIS BLOG IS JUST FULL OF THEORIES !!!!!!Who wants theories?Everybody could create theories man.Come on Darren, either provide value or just QUIT !!
>> This is to Darren::
I know you wanna help but please do not throw theories man. There are so many bloggers who are spending hell lot of time testing things and then releasing tips and tricks for free - Grizz is one of them who shares everything that he has himeself tried. But you just seem to give theories - not testing anything.but just MERE WORDS.
I do not hate you Darren.you are better than most other bloggers. But you need to change.
Yo, I just started reading your blog and there's a lot I'd like to cram into this post (but be forewarned it's not anything particularly important, just my wanting to show my gratitude) but I've only got about five minutes to make it (I didn't think your post would be that long).
a
First off, you're awesome! I was definitely one of those people that thought it was impossible to make money from freely hosted blogs based off of things I'd seen various places. I actually found your site a few months ago, around March (searching "make money online" of course), and saw that it was a blogger blog. Then, like a complete idiot I closed out the window and figured you were just a lame poser unlike the guys that were really making some solid cash online.
Then about a week ago I found your other site- the one specified for AdSense- and thought "this guy's a genius". I clicked the link on that site back here and my jaw dropped when I found out I really was an idiot for waiting months to get started reading. I'm so glad I started sifting through your posts, though, and managed to find the Keyword Academy and sign up.
But even after all that I was still trying to kind of meld Camps 1&3; floating around on Twitter and visiting making money online forums several times per week (oh who am I kidding? Day...) Not to mention all the blog commenting... Oh God, the blog commenting...
But, to wrap this up... I'm thankful once again to you, for helping me narrow my focus. Hopefully one day I'll be one of those internet marketers quietly making money that you'll want to put on your sidebar.
Another, great&long article. I was once reading Darren, Chow and Shoemoney and Yaro until I found your blog, Vic's and Courtney's blogs.
thank you guys,
emir
Are you just trying to get attention by slandering another blog?
Problogger - stays in my feed reader
Grizzly's MMOL - leaves
Sorry, but I prefer blogs that write useful content to blogs that bash useful content.
I always love the bold ness you show in representing your thoughts.
Thank you for all you share to enlighten blogspot bloggers.
Your passion with blogspot blog shall take this platform to further farward and more people to follow.
excellent post... i am amazed with your writing style, theres my cent for the day...
No Griz... you tee'd off NOW :-)
Best... Post.... EVER!!
So true, now that I think about it. I haven't read one of Darren's posts in a long time. I might as well unsubscribe. (will do now). Once again sounds logic prevails.
"This is the far end of the pool and to date very few of them have come forward as they really do make money online" = my kind of folks, and as my last post announced a group I plan to join
Grizz, if you still subscribe to probloger then you're an idiot!
I unsub'd from him, yaro and JC years ago (soon after right after I found you, Vic and Tuttle).
I dont have time to read that mindless dribble - i prefer people who only post when they have something worth saying!!!!
LMAO!
I'm one of those 120,000 readers who automatically deletes his RSS feed too!
But in some ways I feel sorry for Darren Rowse. As you say, he really must want to put a gun to his head knowing he has to write yet another post about blogging, lol!
Having said that, he does now have an authority site to launch his other sites from. And he does have quite a few, so I've heard.
But what a hard way to do things when all you want is to make money online.
And the only reason I haven't unsubscribed from his RSS feed is because he seems like a nice guy.
Now that is sad!
Zania
SEO? What's that?
Ahahahahaha. God that felt good to read. I've published guest posts on Problogger before with real advice just to help the poor people out. It's kind of sad.
i think cent per cent means 100 %
Its Good to teach these A-list blogger types to just leave newbies alone and stop looting them ...
somebody from us have to and who better than you Griz! :)
4. Not blogging on your own domain - I know some swear by using hosted blogs but if you want ultimate control of your blog it is best to do it on your own domain and hosting. Hehe - Yup - no one could possibly be successful using a free host...
hahahahaha.. i really lol'd at this one. and here you, griz have always been in favor of free hosts and have proved they can rank.
I was going to give you more than a cent, but perhaps that's about right. So 99% wrong then? ;)
This is why I've unsubscribed from his blog and many others. Darren has some great stuff to say, but I'm more likely to find it through a tweet or searching his (and other peoples') archives than by subscribing every day. There's only so much to say at any one time (much like Personal Finance, which can be as annoying to read and write as problogging/make money).
"Gee sorry I haven't been posting for a while... Why did I gain 1800 subscribers over the last 3 months with only 3 posts?"
I love it! It's nice AND rare to see you posting this often, but I find myself wanting to hear how you are doing nowadays.
Since you have committed this blog mostly to seo and adsense marketing, is there any way to get some tips to affiliate marketing? I am trying to diversify my (pathethic and small - only adsense for now) online income sources and I am trying to look in to some affiliate sales... For SEO I know that the methods don't change, but for writing?
Play well! I haven't for a few years, but I bet I could still shoot three over par with a little practice.
I learned more about blogging by reading just the bold sentences above... lol
Wheeee! Welcome back, Griz!
I admit, I kept Rowse and Chow on my reader for a while just because I enjoyed their personal posts (Chow does have the cutest daughter). As soon as their blogs became 90% guest posts, I dumped them.
I know you're not a social blogger, but I do get pathetically excited when I see you have a new post up.
great ideas thanks for the blog
lol Grizzly, this is a great post! You are so right. I'm also one of his many subscribers, but I don't even read his crap. I know most of the stuff he writes are just recicled shit. I've learned a lot reading your blog. Thanks and peace
Ok Grizz. I never commented on Your post, never took part in discussion. I am reading Your blog for past almost 2 years I don't know. Usualy I have no time or simply noting to say except maybe some 'thanks' but that is stupid. Or at least looks to me stupid. And looks maybe as 'as licking'. Ok, since I am commenting now, one thanks for all those months (some more time and that will be 'years'). I learned a lot from your blog, or better to say bunch of stuffs where I tought that there is 2 or 3 ways, after reading your posts, bit of experimenting, I found that You almost always clear all mine 'confusions'. I mean on all of techinical stuffs that You are writing, is linking more important than content, how to link, how not to link, how to find niche, etc, etc, etc. Offten in real life when some of mine friends ask how to start making money online blah blah, I say "ask google for make money for beginners" and on number 1 you will find small bible about that. Because i would be very borred to explain everybody same story, it is much easier to ask google who will redirect you to bible. (Ok maybe this methapor with bible isn't realy apropriate, but that is just a small joke).
Now, why I decided to post now. Simply you are one of 3 existing, real, online marketing wizards, your conclusions, results, etc in most cases are ingenious. That is not what I am talking that talks your results. We can enter "how to make money online" or about XYZ similar phrases and to see number 1. Simply. Now about daren. daren is something that worlds need, industry need, people (consumers) need. daren IS A PRODUCT himself. Every garbage that he throw up people will just swalow. They can kill for daren word :) (not literaly.I hope:) ) daren is products, hi is some kind, of, I don't know, but maybe great phrase would be 'corporate pet'. he don't belong officaly to any corporation but he is something like holywood, he is seling idea about 'sweet life' on his way. After that You just need to find apropriate place to buy that idea. I hope that You understand what I mean to say, my english is not so good... So, Internet need daren, daren need internet, and people need both. Why? Simply. Today everone like idea of living of various kinds of online incomes.
Actualy everybody dream to go step more to be rich for online incomes, and what they would like to work on that Internet, what they know to do on Internet? Then it comes to daren, he is ordinay man (physical and mental), people like to indentify with somone who looks like they look, bahave, think like they do, especialy if 'he' is rich and have most of 'stuffs' that they don't have. (I hope that You understand, I don't know english word for that in psichology when somone want to be identify him self with somone else) So point is that You are talking about, backlinks, exploring competition, comparing and finding keywords, bypasing competiotion on different ways, etc, etc, etc, well dear Grizz it is boring, it is hard to do, it something where ordinary mean just loose interesting because need some technical knowledge, when found out that making money online on Your way is actualy harder than some also boring full time job. On the other hand with daren you will not have that problem, he will show you his G payments, he will talk about various b******t, he will tell you at the end to "be better blogger"... I don't know what percent of his readers make online 1% of amount that he made. But he made a lot. And will make a lot of more. His market is larger and larger every day, more readers, more newspapers will write about him, some TV, people will came and came. daren is brand. And he is selling himself for good money. You are not selling anything, you are sharing for free. And I am sure that much higher of your 'silent' and other readers thanks to you makes 1% or 10% of Your earnings every month. And of course daren will always be in spot. he is no better than you but he have from start great marketing promotion and you don't. You realy helping people, but daren is and will be always more populer. That is the fact in tody world, people love 'leaders' who are telling them what they want to hear. Simply.
By the way, I actualy don't read daren, and I am not on his 'list'. I was, to be honest, for few days some time ago, until I found that this will not help me to lean/earn something, in best case it can cost me.
After that I found Grizz. Grizz is not hollywood, Grizz don't sell you sweet dreams, Grizz is giving for free knowledge, which in combination with patience can be monetized to. It is almost that Grizz gives money to his readers.
So Grizz, I think that daren will always have more 'readers', I mean on people who reading rss, visiting daily, and you will always have more people who are comming to you looking for something. daren will be popular forever or at least up to moment when we 'find' some new daren, and you will rich and more rich every day, every year. I think that is very satisfing face. If you ask me would I like to be an actor that makes 1.000.000 every year, and everybody knows him, and people asks for signature and girls scriming every day, or some movie producer which makes 10.000.000 every year and have name with small letters at the end of movie, I will choose the 2nd option.
So Grizz, keep doing what You done all this time, we, your 'fans' needs you, we are not in that number like darens funs , and maybe we are not such good as lickers, but we will try to be better 'fans' :)
Salute
"ass lickers and bone heads"
That phrase makes me wish I could write music; it would make a great Country & Western song. And I'm pretty sure I'm more than a cent correct about that.
Have a great weekend. :-)
"Imagine starting a blog about blogging, somehow attaining an audience for such an inane topic and then having to barf out a fluff post everyday to keep the masses happy."
Haha! I'm trying to refrain from commenting on blogs and actually get some work done as per Ben @ MMWSEO but this line is pure gold!
I'm starting to wonder just how many people there are out in the internet land that are making a killing quietly... Definitely the way to go!
Brava Grizz!
Just glad to hear that you are enjoying the golfing Griz, I am loving golf myself and I recently played at a nice country club for only 13 bucks to walk nine holes, I think it used to be about 35 for the same thing but of course the economy has lowered those prices.
I was just floored by how exquisite those fairways were compared to my normal courses I generally frequent and I just thought "dang...I need to get serious and make money online so that I can start unjoying this kind of thing more often!"
So I am still climbing my own mountain here with internet marketing and some day I might run into you Griz at the country club......
Hi Grizz, it's been a long time. I subscribe to you and that's how I got wind of this latest post of yours about ass lickers and bone heads.
I've been busy doing my own things. Oh yes, I once subscribed to Problogger a long time back but like you say, most of the stuff coming out of his blog are inane posts. His newsletter wasn't much better. In the end I unsubscribed.
I did pop over to read this Seth guy and, good lord, what a load of mumbo jumbo ramblings. I would be ashamed to publish his post on my blog. And as for those who left comments, they are, like you say, ass lickers and bone heads.
Darren has made his pile. Just wonder how sincere he is in carrying on like this at Problogger. Laugh or cry, just pity those blinkered-eye bloggers singing praises at his site. It's all so hollow and fluffy. Talk about snake-oil salesmen!
I don't usually comment much, but I have to say that Grizz you have hit it on the head with this one. Though I am subscribed to many blogs including the A-listers you mentioned, I use those blog merely to research what they're promoting, get a couple posts up about those products, and then outrank their promotional post in Google to make affiliate commissions from the products.
Other than that, I follow you, Court, Ben, and Vic more than any other blogger. I have been making money using Ben's article marketing strategies, and I use your posts to help reinforce what I've learned in creating articles. Now that I have Vic's Niche Devil product, I can use Court's Keyword Academy to help me rank quicker and easier in the search engines. Time to make more money!
LMFAO, LMFAO, Damn Grizz you beat me to this exact same post I was gonna do on my blog.
All these A listers have is a following of star struck ass kissers, and don't even get me started on Shoe, where the byline is Skills to Pay Bills, yet after a year of being subscribed I have yet to find one skill in any of his posts.
I too delete the posts right from email, the only reason they have such popularity is because they were some of the first in the blogging niche, when there was not competition and people view them as stars and experts...and they lead the herd like helpless sheep...WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!
Hey Griz, just wanted to say keep up the good work. I know it is frustrating to see peopel like D.R. spewing his crap - by the way, did you know that John Chow translated into English is "Blows Chunks"? - every time I run across a newbie posting the age old question, "How do I make money online?" I give them your link and tell them to start at the oldest post and work forward like I did. But unfortunately people don't want to work for anything and keep hopping from one get rich quick offer to the next. So as distasteful as it is to say, people like D.R. are internet marketers of a kind - they market "hope" and sell it online for $47 a whack.
It is amusing Griz. I am glad that I found you, Court, Vic, and now Ben before I got too far into the Internet Marketing game. For the last 3 months, I have been implementing what Court said. After realizing that it is out of date, but some still works, I found your blogs. Now, I am averaging $10 per day from AdSense, and dipping my hand into an affiliate marketing site.
I am glad that I read this, because, I had planned on doing a couple of list building experiments, but after reading what you have said, I may put those to the back burner.
I have to publicly thank you, Courtney, Mark, Vic, and Ben for the priceless advice you have given me. I know for a fact, after practicing blackhat and getting out of the game 10 years ago, that what you say works. Thank you to everyone for allowing me to pursue freedom in life. For this, I am deeply grateful. You guys will see me around a lot more the next coming months, about time for me to stop lurking.
I am still laughing Grizz. I am lucky that I found your blog before all of those idiots. Isn't is just a weird coincidence that I found you first? Wait...no it isn't. You are at the top of the serps and outrank all of their retarded blogs.
By the way, any pointers on my blog would be amazingly helpful. I started about 3 months ago, just added Adsense sometime in July and have already made over $25. Now, I am realizing that I made some mistakes, but am starting 5 more new blogs. My main problem is finding niches.
Btw, how often do you need to post on a new blog? With my blog, I post once a week, anytime after that, google stops sending me traffic, but in your Reactolite Spectacles blog, you only made 2 posts, then stopped and still rank #1 for the keyword.
Great post Griz I will be making some adjustments.
WOW Grizz! Posting on a Friday! Your underwear must have really been in a knot!
Glad I follow the right people (finally). Unfortunately I was taken done the wrong path by those A-List Bloggers. My only regret is that I wasted over two years and many thousands of dollars before I found you guys.
For newbies that find you, Vic and Court right from the get-go do not know how fortunate they are. I'm still not hitting it out of the park yet, but my batting average gets better and better all the time.
Thanks for starting my weekend out right. Hope the golf game was great.
Check you later!
"cent percent" lol
I bid 2 cents.
Shhhh... Keep quiet Griz! I like not having any real competition, you are letting the cat out of the bag.
Just kidding, another wonderful post!
hey Griz,
Do you think G's recent alg. update gave even more juice to aged and trusted domains? For instance the last several days a Forbes article has ranked #1 for "make money". Hell, the article is 2 years old and doesn't have many backlinks. Is the Forbes domain really carrying that article to the #1 spot?
I can't make sense of it. I bet in the last month alone several other similar authority domains MSN, Business Week, CNBC etc...Have published similar articles, with similar/same relevent content, with "make money" in the Title but they are not even near page one. Why this article? I can't find the reason.
When I started blogging, I followed Darren Rowse tips and advice and it really don't help me, I'm not indexed in G and visitors from social media don't click ads they just view my blog.
Griz blog is the one that teach me how to make money online because when I followed the instructions given here, my 1 month old blog is already indexed and some post rank high in their keyword like how to grow bitter melon and how to make compost. I'm learning more because I'm still a newbie (3 months in blogging, 2 months wasted because of listening to Darren Rowse)
Oh well thanks Griz
You are language is getting pretty foul, I think I give up reading your blog for a while until you are back to normal ;-( SY
Dammit, it seems my blog on fixing erectile dysfunction doesn't fit the rules. Oh and I've written link bait titles too - Crap.
Ahh it seems I suck at being a 'better' blogger. Oh well. Better go and return those checks that I've been getting.
:)
Love ya Griz
Tracey
it's fun because you have any possibilities to really proove us that you really make some solid money online.
You mention some nice guy in this business but they are all your friends.
You said lot of reader of Darren don't comment, but with your almost 5.000 rss reader, you only have ~100 comments by article. (lot of them long week after the publication wich is special)
So maybe we loose our time to follow them, i agree with you. But maybe we loose our time with you too ;)
Hey Everyone - just finished golf (shot a 75) and am heading out to dinner but will get to the comments when I get back in a few hours.
Cheers
Darren Rowse? Who's he?
Grizz? He's the man!
Me? I am one of those people who know it is possible to make money online with free hosting because i am doing it now and it's all because a man named "Grizz" taught me how to do it and because I don't follow any of the suggestions and lessons of those A-listers but focusing on the tips to make money online provided here on this UGLY blog.
This is what I called "War of the Bloggers" and I bet you win Griz!
Grizz,
Hahaha great post. I still don't know how people can follow what the A-listers put out everyday. They are so full of fluff and b.s. it is ridiculous.
I haven't got to golf as much as I wanted to this summer, just too busy.
"just finished golf(shot a 75)"
And then you had to finish the other 5 holes right?!
Damn, you are almost as good at golf as making money onine. What is your handicap?
Feeling a little "pissy" my friend? maybe it's that damn flu. Caught it meself last week. LOL
Are You Still Dreaming To Be Famous Blogger?
Hey Grizz!
You have brilliantly showed all of us how to make a killing online with your platinum plated propositions, and now you show us how to get 100% strike rate with our online shots - just aim at sitting (Sething?) ducks!
;-)
Haha - great Grizz! Great to hear your views again and great to hear them more blunt and straightforward than ever. And you are right; too many people (my self included) spend too much time on camp 1 and 2 - I quit camp 1 long time ago for the same reasons you describe, but camp 2 has been a bit more difficult to quit. Camp 2 offers high (very high) profits if you just download their special report (and leave your email) - but you are right - they are just blowing hot air up your ass.
Camp 3 is the way to go - if you don't care about fame, but would rather earn money and play golf :-)
My fav was .. o0o you can't make money with a free blog lol.
Your sarcasm gave me a kick tonight. Thanks :)
That was quite entertaining.
Hey Griz, I'm not exactly sure how I found your blog but after finding it I focused on SEO and finding results. I do have a long way to go but it a start. Being a reader of ProBlogger myself I think his popularity is what makes people subscribe to them and not many calls them out too. But in a while you will see its same stuff repeating again. I guess if you can get to that level its a good way to make money :)
The bear is really baaaaacckk!!! hehe. Great post. I kind of feel sorry for Darren Rowse, too, especially if he's indeed making less money than you. Ouch.
If I were him, I'd just outsource Problogger then go spend my time reading Griz, Vic and Court.
Ok. It's a ton of theory and fluff and not too many details. But a lot of us go to school for 4 years to hear theory everyday and we get used to it.
Griz!
CrazyFrog hit it dead on.
Your 4,879 readers, well, the largest percent of them "get it"
1%= common sense
4879 X 100 = 487,900, damn thats a few people.
How does it feel to be an authority?
Cheers!
Love golf as well. Went to Hazeltine today (friday) and watched Tiger kick ass. Keep the posts comin GRIZZ
Phew....Another hour on this post.
CrazyFrog,great comment.
Nice Grizz. Started down this path a year ago with JC and DR, and didn't learn a thing. Thankfully, my persistent searching paid off and I found Court...who in turn led me to you.
Without you two guys, I would have been sunk.G was moving towards a new model where authority would play a greater role...maybe they are beginning to implement it.
BK, I remember reading that
What people read matters less than what they do with it afterwards. If they do nothing, then it barely makes any difference whether they read Chow, Darren, Griz or Court. The feeling of belonging is (and it always was) very strong. How else would somebody manage to motivate people to join armies, go to wars and maybe let themselves killed for a "noble purpose"? There was this movie, Forrest Gump, remember? When one day Forrest stopped running, all his followers were puzzled: "and what are we going to do now, if you stop?".
A really great Post. Griz, I hope you keep coming back more and more often. I know in the last 1.5 years I have gone thru your Blog and studied it many , many times and developed my own SEO strategy from head to toe with your wisdom.
I totally agree about your assertions with ProBlogger. Just useless stuff. And that goes fo Caroline Mddlebrook who seems to do the same thing but does it trying to come off innocent to get away with it.
However, in all due respect I will have to take issue with you on one point in this Post today. And that is what you say about the 'List Marketers' !!
I hope, hope and hope even more that you are just referring to the List Marketers who build a List and pedal Crap to the MMO Niche and other Bloggers !! If so I totally agree wih you 100% and the Warriors Forum is full of this crap.
But my friend if you are making a sweeping judgement about ALL List Marketers being a waste of time and useless then I totally call your ASS out on that one and disagree with you 100% !! No offense becuase I totally respect but I call it like I see it.
The fact is MANY 'List marketers' who build a List with Niches outside the MMO Niche are Internet MArketers plain and simple as that.
I know FIRSTHAND that building a List and providing tools and products for people wanting to 'learn to speak Spanish' or for people who want to be better at 'Public Speaking ' , 'Lose weight' etc..etc.. is an extraordinary way to make gobs and gobs of Money from repeat Customers on your List over and over again. And helping them out at the same time.
That is just fact. And my friend we are NOT talking about Internet Marketers who just make $30k a month...we are talking about Internet Marketers building huge Lists and making 200K to 300K a month !! I personally know of 6 guys who do this and are NOT in the Make Money Online Niche.
Like I said the List builders targeting newbie Bloggers and PPC players are full of BS selling stuff that you can totally get here for Free.
Anyway, enough of my soap box.
Keep up the good stuff here. It helps me tremendously.
But quite frankly I just aint one of those people who sits back and shuts up and doesnt question things !! ;)
Ah I am onto you griz -this is a loooong post and now you will hibernate for the rest of summer right cause this will sit on the front page! You are a wicked bad blogger who has taught me an awful lot!Let me know if I got the anchor wrong - but I don't think I did.
BTW does WordPress break if you get too many comments? Just wondering cause I don't have anything like Darren's subscriber list but they are sure a talkative bunch...
Hi
Hehe... You make more money than Darren?
I do believe it.
You Are The Man.
Well.. Griz thanks for posting that truly insightful and inspiring list. LOL, I never followed one A-lister when I started my make money online journey.
However, now that I am making a little coin because of you.. I think I will try my hand at blogging...LOL.. Starting with #2 on Darrens list. I will be back to ask how to monetize in a year..
You must be missing the relaxation of the woods :o)
Lis.... LMAO
-DennisJr
Great to here from you Grizz, how was the golf tournament?
I agree you four are like the four horsemen of the apocalypse and I have made a lot more money since following you guys than I ever did reading those others.
Thank you for all the information you have provided me in my quest to be a quiet IMer.
Great Post Grizz.
Darren Rowse -- what a waste of time. I actually don't have anything against Darren or Chow (who is is a fellow Vancouverite like myself) for the fact that they've made money. They have a sucessful model of making money --- for themselves.
These A listers are really those "blogger types" who have somehow won the lottery and are now trying to sell a "how to win the lottery guide" to others.
I find Chow particularly funny with his "I make money by talking about how I make money blogging." He makes money by talking about making money which is what makes him money. A big circle that goes nowwhere.
These A listers send thousands of people on the wrong trail and shred many dreams with their nonesense. I guess it does lessen the competition...
Good to see you posting again and another insightful post!
Ben
Nice to see you back Griz. I think Darren actually comes across as a nice guy, but I'm so glad I never got sucked into the whole A-list blogging thing when I started looking into making money online. I can't imagine anything worse than having to come up with new posts on the same topic day in day out, & spend hours 'socialising' online with commenters & other bloggers, or on social networking sites. Especially if there's not much money to be made doing it! I like your anonymous search traffic-oriented approach much better.
Ben, your right! A listers are helping us all that really know how to do things! By making thousands of people fail, they are getting rid of tons of competition!
And have you seen his blog titles??
3 ways to..
4 ways to ..
5 ways to..
6 ways to...
7 steps to..
i too can do it Darren !!!Then why am i making less money than what you make?HUH??
Hey Griz, just wondering, have you dabbled in forex?
I'm getting extremely bored and want to take a month off of building my own network of crap, so I decided on studying forex this time.
Nice to find a new post, Griz.
I'm slowly implementing what I learn from you. I can now have a new site indexed fast and I am building backlinks from WordPress blogs which are also building backlinks. I know it will take time to rank for anything with the little that I have, but it's fun to learn from you.
By the way, I'm linking to my new site. It may be ugly but it will look a lot better now.:D
Thanks for being you.
Let me just share my testimony. Ever since I have read Griz technique and the rest of his gang, I have been able to consistently land on the first page of google for keywords that I chose.
Before everything happens by accident. But now I am consciously aware of what I am doing.
Oh and I still read JohnChow, Darren Rowse, and Shoemoney when I got nothing to do. But only for entertainment.
Tomorrow's post on problogger: "How to Overcome Being Criticized by Other Bloggers in 7 Easy Steps and in 30 Days"
Blunt Grizz is my favorite!
I love it when guys claim you can't write for search engines and humans at the same time. Dumbasses!
BTW--you know that Darren Rowse was a trained minister, and that is why he fluffs and huffs and uses doushe-baggish illustrations?
Solid stuff as always Grizz... just wait til you see what I got comin' for you in response to this post big Brother! LOL
..stay tuned in a couple days,
AL
Dang it! I thought your expertise WAS writing about acne! Shoot - I've just been wasting my time ;)
Really though, I think you should write a blog all about sarcasm. Now there's something you are an expert at.
Yeh, 2 kinds of blogs - social and search engine - depends on what your goal is. Do you want a lot of readers? Or do you want to make more money.
I ended up with a lot of readers and now I have to babysit them and make sure they don't act like idiots on my site and play nice with one another. Sometimes I wonder why I went that direction. However, I do make money off of them thar readers but it is a bit more challenging.
I have the make money type of blogs as well that require little to no work too. What I found with the social blogs is that it is never ending. You never get away from it because people constantly need something from you (now I understand where you live Griz) and it's like you can never leave your blog or stop writing because now you are responsible for a whole mess of people. Think long and hard before you try that whole social route.
The Computer Lady
Since coming to your blog about 3 months back, I have been a silent reader, and have created two competitive niche blogger blogs based on your helpful (and clever) tips. They both have made more in adsense (even 2$ a day for only 2 ads sometimes - a first ever for me) than my other two not so search targeted blogs/sites in nearly 18 months (due to inadequate SEO optimization, excess posts - rather than 1 displaying for adsense, poor anchor text, etc).
Your posts are also straight up, even hard case (as in the take on problogger), and of course vary valuable for creating niche blogs for monetization via adsense. The one thing I need to research/improve is actually finding a not too competitive niche, as I can easily customize blogger blogs, write content, etc - but mainly for competitive niches - as there is information everywhere online (and offline) to work and adapt from.
But sincere thanks
Michael, Auckland, New Zealand
I must admit that I do scan over most posts on ProBlogger, but agree that they don't always have a lot of "meat" to them. But I think Darren is well aware of all of this as he himself has pointed out that his readership often hang around for a month or two before going off.
After a while all these blogs get a bit repetitive but the joy of RSS feeds is you can scan through once in a while and pick out the good stuff!
Hey Grizz, Great post as always. Very clever for you to go after those keywords in this post! I would LMAO if you overtook Darren Rowse/ProBlogger in the search engines!
Love it Grizz..I only hope to one day finally get through all your material because so far it ALL works.
To all the folks out there bashing Grizz for bashing Darren Rowse, you are all fucktards and quite obviously missed the point. Get a clue.
I really hope you start ranking for Darren Rowse LOL I think that would hysterical. Years ago, I used to read his blog and a lot of the big A-list bloggers, the ones who were doing a lot of personal blogging before the thing to do became blogging about blogging. That's when it all became so very dull.
Hi Grizz,
Great post and advice.Nicely written blog.I like reading it.It is very interesting, easy to read with full of relevant information.
Keep up the good work.
It is necessary to follow and focus the relevant information online that work to prevent information overloads.
Regards,
David Koh
Internet Marketer.
Another excellent post Griz I really love your writing style
Hahahaha... informative and hilarious. Nicely done.
Ok, I'll admit it (up to the time I started reading Griz), I was a loyal little drone of the A-List because I thought they knew something I didn't.
Of course my blog went nowhere..no money, sometimes readers, etc.
Thanks Griz, I've got my **it together and doing what was making money for me before I got caughtup in the tripe.
Well, first to say I am glad you are back Griz, because I thought you will be gone forewer.
Second, now I know why I really read your blog: beacuse you are giving so much away.
Cheers
This post finally got it through to me. I'm looking at two different purposes for my blog and the two are difficult (if not impossible) to mesh. The first is to build a platform for my writing - that means more readers so that publishers know I have a solid following. Readers that actually read my blog and stick around to click through to older posts. The second is to get advertisers to flock to may site (or to atleast make money).
IF - and this is a great big if - I understand correctly then making money is all about SEO ultimately.
So - maybe if I was REAL smart I would flip one of my blogs to SEO focus instead of concentrating on that whole platform concept for all of them.
Hmmmm?
Aw, Dammit! I move and tune out from the Internet and all of a sudden you go on a posting frenzy. Some friend you are Griz. ;)
Plus you'll get a reputation that you might not want to live with.I can live with it...
Seriously. Why the hell would I care what my "reputation" is? As far as I can tell, there's this thing I imagined up as a vehicle to make money materialize out of thin air. It's called the Internet. The Internet is a great place to hallucinate things you imagine becoming real. Just go ask the great god Google for what you want, and Google gives it to you. Ask and you shall recieve.
So, on this Imaginary thing called the Internet, Imaginary people that I can't prove actually exist, visit the Internet, whatever that means, and click on ads that I'm also uncertain actually are real. I push a few buttons and VOILA! I have a post on the Internet that features imaginary advertising that imaginary people click thus causing money to materialize out of thin air.
And somehow, with all this great, happy, wonderful hallucinating I'm doing, I'm supposed to sabotage it by worrying about what the make believe people think about me?
Does not compute.
Hey Fiar - I was wondering what you were up to? Hope all is well and glad you stopped by.
As for your imaginary scenario... ditto!
The only thing real is the money somehow materializes out of "thin air" and let's me play golf. Gotta love it!
Obama made you move huh? Where? Cuba? Canada? lol.
Great hearing from ya'
So if you don't read his stuff, why don't you unsubscribe?
