Are you Impressed with RSS Numbers?

I had planned on a 2 pot post today but was invited out for a game of Golf this morning... what to do... hmmmm...

Winter is on its way so I'm Golfing. The 10,000 word post on how to write a 10,000 word post on Oil Filters will have to wait!

In the meantime I have something rather entertaining and even a bit enlightening for you folks to read. Allyn Hane and Steve Sherron have posted some results after having been featured on some high traffic blogs. Beware the language is not for your mother (if you are a mom don't tell the kids you have heard such things) but I would encourage you to check out these Video bloggers and rethink your strategies if your goal online is social blogging. If you think having huge RSS subscribers and tens of thousands of Twitter followers will make you a force to be reckoned with... well maybe not.

First see Allyn's post Social Media vs Organic Search

and then visit Steve's site for I have a Man Crush on Griz Grizzly

The two posts are related and discuss the same event.

Update... Lissie has something to say as well Social Media Scam? Is Griz A Social Blogger?

I asked for posts worth linking to a few days ago and more of you are starting to come forward. There is one thing you can all benefit from and that is in building up our community. The more authority sites we build between our selves the more sites we have to help us all achieve our goals online. We have the numbers - we just need to get everyone motivated and that's my prime goal at the moment.

If you are interested in using Amazon I suggest you read Tracey's post How to Make Money with Amazon

Those interested in using Adsense might want to follow along with Michael's new site Working on the Go:The Adsense Startup

If you find their sites useful then get out there and let others know with your own posts - you may find that helping others is a good way to help yourself.

Be back later - hopefully in 72 shots or less!

Cheers

Griz

Thanks for the post grizz I been wanting to learn about Amazon affiliate money. So thanks for that. Hopefully someone will write about affiliate marketing and using CJ, LS and other affiliates as well.

I'd love to learn about people with successful Chitika and CJ and LS etc =).
Thanks for the updates and PS: if you keep playin golf, you're gonna have to buy your own course.

On a side note.. if you keep writing about all these ways to make money online, I'm going to be reading instead of working gah!

Hey Griz,
Thanks for sending me a link to the Adsense Startup post I did. I was checking my stats this morning and wondering why I was getting traffic when I hadn't promoted it yet....lol.

I really appreciate it and appreciate all of the lessons I've learned here at your site. I check it all the time for new content!

Keep it going...

Griz, thanks to you I'm now addicted to Allyn Hane's site! LOL! Allyn has the BEST sense of humor and he ROCKS! Oh...and he's incredibly cute too, which doesn't hurt one bit! Ha!

Griz, I'm always tempted to Stumble your posts and I have a few times, but since you say that social traffic drops your earnings.... I've pulled back on that. You are the BEST! I think I love you! :)

Griz, I've been hearing rumors that G is making "drastic" changes in how SEO is used. I'm hoping to see a post by you on that soon so we can all keep up...grrrr. (Dang, I wish there were a subscribe to comments on here)

It's amazing that I actually read everything and watched all the videos. There was long period of time where I had to be really selective because a project of mine was sucking all my time.

Allyn is an amazing and insightful guy. Everything he said made sense, unlike the people he tends to talk about on his videos.

DinoEntrails said...

Holy crap what happened Grizz?!?! You have dropped in the serps for all of the main keywords. I just checked and you are on page 2 of "Make Money" and you are #8 for Make Money Online" How did you piss google off?

I searched google for google update august 2009, and from what I found, people are saying that google will be placing more weight on on-page optimization, rather than off-page. No idea why they would do this, besides to stop people from doing article marketing and spamming links or whatever...

Wait... Are you guys saying that RSS numbers DON'T MATTER?! OMGWTF - That's not what John Chow told me...

Oh yeah, and I thought you might get a kick out of this - For some reason, a few of my bliggity-blogs have been getting comments from people thinking that I'm you and asking me (err, well I guess technically they're asking you) questions about SEO and such. Kind of weird, but I guess I'll take it as a compliment...

Yeah, I'm from North Carolina too and that really pissed me off. Just go over to South Carolina/Virginia/Tennessee and get a P.O. Box there. Probably not all that legal, but that's what I did... I suppose you could also have it sent to out-of-state family, too.

There are things about blog farms in the posts, just not one titled "blog farm". Be nice if we could search within the blog for the subjects we are currently interested in. I looked around but could only find one post mentioning "the farm" But I know I've read stuff here about them.

Another great post, and hopefully you enjoyed your golf game, too. As far as social media, for me it depends on which one I use for my article and blog marketing. I know I do attract some traffic from Twitter, but I also have been fairly careful about staying within the healthcare area as far as who I follow. Facebook has sent some readers my way, as well as a sporadic few from other sites. In the end, when someone is first starting out every link they receive helps.

My website is a year old, and I found out recently that I had well over 600 links coming in and am a PR3. I was shocked as I hadn't spent a lot of time on promotion, just plugged away with my blog posts. I have only recently started monetizing the site.

Looking forward to what I can accomplish as I become more serious about MMO and start taking your advice more seriously.

Oil Rig Jobs said...

Hey Griz,

At the risk of sounding a little like I've got a "man crush" on you too... I LOVE THIS BLOG!! I've been lurking for a while and making use of your link resource page, which I might add is a thing of beauty for us traffic challenged IM'ers.

One of my brand new blogger blogs in the health niche just earned it's first few dollars after 2 weeks! Not too shabby at all.

But I have just one small little problem which I hope you or one of the knowledgeable folks here might be able to enlighten me on.

One of my sites which was getting about 4000 uniques per month and earning a couple of hundred in Adsense plus a goodly bundle from Clickbank disappeared from Big G's .com results about 4 weeks ago and about 2 weeks ago all the Adsense ads went public service!!!!??

This has coincided with ramping up my linking efforts here. Nothing has changed on the website or blog for the past 24 months (earnings have been climbing reglarly each month)apart from more content and the addition of some CPA offers.

I'm at my wits end as I was planning on additional blogs in sub-niches for the future. Adsense is still displaying on my other websites and blogs and I'm not being smart priced.

The frustrating thing is not knowing what has caused the sudden change in this one site. I'm still getting traffic from Big G's .co.za search so it's quite annoying to see a few hundred dollars disappear without really knowing why. This website has been my top earner and to have my baby die quite so suddenly is tragic in the extreme.

If anyone has time to give an opinion then please check out the website I've linked here.

I'm also seeing a number of references to 10 000 word posts or pages? Would I be correct in getting the feeling that this will have a very positive effect in ranking?

A cryptic clue would be much appreciated. The golf gods will up your karma which will definitely result in a sub 70 round next time you're out chasing dimples.

Some days I get so 'man jealous' of the Griz that I just plop down on the couch and watch Ice Road Truckers to make my life easier. Hmmmmm...would I rather try so hard to make money online or deliver pipes to rigs on the Dalton Highway.

Crap, Griz, I'm just like Oil Rig Jobs - lurking around like a hungry badger. Keep it up - I enjoy your blog acutely, almighty, awfully, drastically, exceedingly, exceptionally, excessively, exorbitantly, extraordinarily, highly, hugely, immensely, immoderately, inordinately, intensely, markedly, mortally, notably, over, overly, overmuch, plenty, prohibitively, quite, radically, rarely, remarkably, severely, strikingly, surpassingly, terribly, terrifically, to nth degree, too much, totally, uncommonly, unduly, unusually, utterly, vitally.

You pick! If your handicap is under 80 then I might as well pack it up and head to Alaska.

Fay said...

@Anonymous

Awesome search tip, I'm kind of a dunce with figuring out stuff like that.

I've been wanting to read all the posts about authority sites without going through all the posts hunting for them.

If Grizzly says we need an authority site let all us cows, sheep and pigs (had to throw that in there as a nod to Frank) create one.

Although I've seldom seen a farmer growing those 3 crops normally in my neck of the woods it is corn and soybeans. Must be bioengineered plants.

I do not usually comment as much as I have been lately but I'm waiting for the "authority site" post and Griz seems to be stalling not that I'm rushing him or anything. So I'm popping in 200 times a day both as a writing avoidance technique and looking for the new post.

Back to lurking

Hi Griz,

Very impressive blog you have here.
Let me tell you something, as much as I hate problogger and john chow and others, I have stopped reading their shit since 2005 (aka since they started). Posting bullshit everyday and lying to people about how they make money!!

I gotta say, your blog is freaking awesome just because you're HONEST!

Phillip said...

I am currently workin on a 10 000 word post telling how you can write a 10 000 word post. I'll get back to you when I am done:)

Sam said...

It is interesting what has happened here. By clicking the links in people's names, it is evident that there are a truckload of people all starting their own brand new MMO blogs. They write their noob posts and link back to you, Lissie, and now Allyn.

This has worked out very well for you but I really wonder how many of them have the talent and skill to ever make it worth their while. Your posts are original and full of real information...theirs are not and just regurgitate what they read here and other places since they are all beginners. Same old thing: make a blog about making money before you are actually making any.

John said...

Gee, thanks Sam. You hit the nail on the head with your insiteful, cutting edge critique of what is probably one of the internet's most helpful guys' websites.

By missing the point completely, you showcase your own ignorance. Do yourself a favour and read through the whole site with a notepad open and maybe, just maybe you'll be open minded enough to learn something.

Perhaps you missed the point of all this and as you have such a discerning and well adjusted view on IM, perhaps you could enlighten us with your take on what we should all be doing.

Oh, hang on a minute, you can do better than that, just point us to your top ranked site on... I don't know, maybe something like "make money online". Then we could just follow along as you explain how you did it.

Mate, your arrogance is astounding! I for one have taken away tons more workable advice and info from Grizz's sites than any of the paid services I've been duped into buying. And that goes for the other helpful folks here too.

As far as the people in this little community are concerned, I have found them humble, realistic, helpfull, motivated and sincere.

And the cherry on the top is that I've not been pitched once. Free info, given with the best of intentions and lots of help and advice. Even when I had a heart attack and couldn't reply to link requests that I'd sent out all I got was support and best wishes.

These are my kind of people, so take a friendly suggestion and go get an attitude adjustment or get knotted.

@Sam

Very few will make a lot of money, a few will make some money, the rest will give up.
Same formula, centuries old.

I don't see too many noobs branching off from this blog and "make a blog about making money" per se; most of the noobs are not dispencing advice about how to make money online but rather are describing their online journey. At some point in time they will offer advice but usually it is after doing some work and learning some shit on their own.

Fay said...

I did say I was going to go back to lurking but wanted to write my opinion back @Sam.

First of all I believe Lissie and Allyn are both Griz Noobs, so there are 2 of your "how many"

Secondly if I have to read regurgitated crap which fills up most of the internet content I'd rather read Griz's crap... ummm did that come out right?

Third I'm really enjoying reading the latest blog griz linked to the Working on the Go one, its less of a how to site and more of a journal of his journey in the mmo field. I do not know if that noob will ever get high in the serps for make money or adsense but that does not mean he isn't a talented writer

Fourth, last and most important, Griz is an inspiration to many people. To use a golf analogy if Tiger Woods inspired you do you think you would take up tennis? You'd try your hand at golf and even if you sucked at it you'd probably have fun doing it.

He's kind of a combination of drill sargent and third grade teacher. He can be harsh and blunt but if you do good he gives out gold stars. LOL

So thanks Griz, and keep up the good work.

Fay

Sam said...

Ahh yes. Griz has his own attack dogs that come out even when he isn't being attacked!

John, you need to calm down. Maybe I wasn't clear: Griz is great and taught me a lot. The point of my post is that there are now dozens of new MMO blogs out there all with posts about "What I learned from Griz".

John, take my friendly advice and look around you. Griz makes money from the search engines mostly and the affiliate sale once and a while from you and me. How are all these other new MMO people going to make money when all they have to say is what they read here? They will never be able to get a following because they are not Griz. Griz is a leader and they are followers.

It is great that they all want to make MMO blogs but HOW ARE THEY GOING TO MAKE MONEY FROM THEM I ask again? We are all here to make money and it is unlikely any of them will be able to pull it off in the fashion Griz has.

And John, you are a bit on the rude side. Seriously, I said nothing bad about you (don't know you and now don't want to) or Griz so please learn to be nicer.

Phillip said...

@Sam

I think you totally missed the point. Try reading the what Griz writes here about authority blogs.. The reason people are creating MMO blogs is because there are so many people that can link to them, and eventually all of the people will have an authority blog (in the ideal case) then you can use that blog to link to sites from different niches and have some serious link juice. The only way Griz will link to anyone from this blog is for that blog to have some good content - it might be a recap of everything he has written here, but if it is quality and is not "questionable" in Googles eyes it's OK.

The people building these MMO blogs are not building them to make money directly out from those sites but to get the juice... Savvy?

bk said...

@Sam

Again, I don't know of a single noob from this blog that has started an MMO blog for the sole purpose of making money. The money is made in other niches, the blogs are the journal that documents the success or failures of the online journey. It has been made clear here and many other places that the MMO niche is too competitive for a noob.
There have been many frindships forged because of this blog, Griz/this blog is the common denominator in those friendships so his name(psuedo) gets mentioned frequently in our blog post.
I will agree there is a lot of ass kissing that goes on here and at times it is tiring, but I will say that as a result of the content of this blog the foundation of my internet business is rock solid. Also many of us are thankful for the teaching here and send links back giving credit where credit is due.

Phillip and BK,
Yes you are right, I may have missed that point and I understand what you are saying.

I still wonder though how long they can keep up a MMO blog that doesn't make money or at least very little money. That will be a BIG test of patience.

In this game, it is very hard to keep going with something unless it is producing visible returns and that is why 99% fail.

Yes, a test of patience it will be <---Yoda wording for the Star Wars searchers.

John said...

@Sam

As I said, you missed the point entirely. As Phillip points out, we're looking at developing authority sites and as bk mentions we reciprocate by giving links. No one has asked me for money yet and no one has spammed me with the latest, must-have software/ebook/membership site.

How many internet marketers who bombard our inboxes with crap consider giving back in a meaningful way by linking to their clients' websites or blog... not one!

And no, I'm not normally rude, but when you refer to people in a dismissive way and ridicule their attempts at improving themselves, then yes I'll be a little bit rude. You're just lucky I'm in a good mood ;-)

Now that we've beaten our chests a bit and made some threatening gestures, maybe we can get back to the original programming.

My apologies to everyone other than Sam if my previous post was offensive. I'll just get back to my farm blog... lurking like a badger.

RED said...

Keep in mind that although Grizzly's blog has slid in the SERPs, there may be test on his part involved. I'm sure some of you have noticed that it also isn't quite the same as it was when it was on top. Examples: His post titles link to his main index and not the posts themselves and his labels are gone. Maybe Google isn't as crazy as they seem and maybe it's good ol Griz's doing. It looks like he's testing how much those affect his site's ranking. Then again, I tend to read too much into things and I suck golf, so what do I know?

KC said...

@ Sam

Who are you to judge what people write about. Is the MMO niche a members only club just for successful IM's like you.

This business is hard enough without people like you bringing new people down with negativity.

If you were half the man you think you are you would never post a comment like that on a site like this.

Now go tell your wife how bad her cooking is, go tell your kids how dumb they are, and go outside and kick your dog. LOL :-)

Alan said...

I don't like what I am seeing here on this blog lately. This isn't the first time it happened if I recall.

It looks like this "community" is becoming like the Site Build It people that came out of no where and attacked in force anyone who was writing bad reviews of SBI (Lissie). We all saw how cultish that was.

If you all have blinders on and can't even begin to see that other people may have questions (they might even word them poorly), you have become what Griz was fighting against with SBI.

Now if I am not mistaken, if anyone has any sort of an opposing view or asks a question here and then even politely says he now understands (Sam), people are still rudely jumping all over him.

There is no need to rudely attack someone who has not attacked anyone here. I mean come on, are all you new Griz followers that uncouth? You all travel in a herd now? The herd of Griz?

I don't like it and now if I am not mistaken you will jump all over me. Lets see if you do. I know you want to because it sure seems a few of you have axes to grind.

You know what? Let Griz do the talking. He is more than capable of setting things straight on his own blog.

That's my 2 cents. Between Vic's rediculously x-rated rantings and now this, I may have to find another place to go.

(I know I know, don't let the door hit me on the way out)

sherwin said...

You all cool down, mates. Griz is probably laughing his ass off because while he's already hard at work getting more authority backlinks to get back his spot, you are all here commenting instead of refining and creating more networks and sites. If I'm not mistaken, Griz has talked about events like these where you can get knocked off the top spot because of some weird google shuffle. Get to work people.

sherwin said...

Oh, and I think some lessons can be learned from this shuffle. One, it is really possible to knock of the big guy off of the top of any niche. and Two, About.com is really a pain in the ass. :)

lonnie said...

Yeah, I have to agree with some of what others are saying here. I see almost a tinge of a 'cultish' like mentality here. I love Griz and what he has so unselfishly shared with all of us for free. But damn people quit the ass kissing and quit trying to emulate this man. It make me sick !! ;)

I defintiely dont agree with everything Griz has done. And Lissie ?? My God you dont want to get me started on that little irresponsible amateur !!

Personally, what I have done is taking all that Griz has shared with me and started about a dozen Niche Blogs focused around Adsense and CPA Offers.

I would HIGHLY suggest you guys get this notion out of your heads about starting a MMO Authority Site. Griz does it very successfully but I am afraid you will be sorely disappointed when you see the wasted time you put in it and have little success.

The MMO Authority Site like Grize's is hard to duplicate.

Please, take the knowledge here and pursue your own path with Niches like Dating, self improvement, weight loss, selling oil filters, growing diasies ...the possibilites are endless.
Once you get these going then backlink with the Community here and the Niche Sites they have created.

But please I beg you to give up on this MMO Authority Blogging stuff. Trust me you are not going to be the next Griz. Maybe with Oil Filters, but not MMO !! ;)

Phillip said...

@Lonnie

LOL. I love it when people get pissed at people because of the blog they are building. Do you really think that everyone is trying to be the next Griz? That would take so much that not anyone of us has the potential. Even though there are some how-tos and similar posts on those blogs, they are purely for the reason to be able to get some links. You maybe missed the fact that an authority site does not necessarily mean that your blog is the best source of information on a specific niche. It just means that you have a decent amount of high quality incoming links and a lot of content. Getting those links in this niche is probably easiest when compared to other niches - the dating websites are not likely to give you anchored backlinks since they want to keep the customers to theirselves.

Take a look at Lissies site and have a look if that is similar to this site. Is she trying to be the next Griz? Even though she has an authority status blog in passive income niche. That site is not about how to create your passive income, but rather about how she is doing it. She is writing down her journey - and doing some real blogging while she is at it.

And what stops people from writing a MMO blog and create a dozen of niche websites a week? I am too ridiculed to keep on going. Grow up and try to figure out what the actual point here is. Griz is building a huge linking network using a huge amount of different IP's by just creating one post :)

Experimentation is the key to this business and as Dirk just said doing is the only way to make it happen. If you don't want to listen to griz or vic fine, report back when your rss numbers are high and you have online income doing things the A-list way.

@Dirk

I can appreciate where you are coming from. But to me the you are being a disservice to others telling them to go for it NO MATTER WHAT !! Even though there are countless more experience IMers who suggest otherwise. Basically, your kind of like the blind leading the blind.

The fact of the matter is the MMO Niche is a super competitive Niche to break into. And if you are a Newbie you really have no business entering the MMO Niche to begin with because how can you tell people how to earn money when you havent earned any ?? This is just my opinion.

Like I said to me it is a disservice by telling others to do something when there is clear evidence that the MMO Niche is not something a Newbie should start out with !!

btw, this has nothing to do with being negative or mean spirited. This is just Truth backed by experience. And is intended to help many newbies and keep them from wasting their time in the MMO Niche !!

Take it how you want it.

Dino--see the post on my (wait for it) MMO blog on UAW vs. AMA. Basically, UAW has a better set of directories than AMA but AMA has a better spinner. Article directories are still a viable way for beginners to get anchored backlinks if you also get a few authority links to your site.

Oh my....!

Looks like some steam is building up in here.

C'mon guys, please cool it down. You all know that no one wins in this kind of exchange. It will always go in circles.

Points have been made and everyone is entitled to their own opinion.

Please let it go and just agree to disagree with each other with no hard feelings.

@ Lonnie,

It was "no matter what anyone says" Not NO MATTER WHAT, I can use you for an example.........everyone see Lonnies comment above.

Why does a MMO site have to tell people how to make money?,It can also tell people how not to make money as I am sure most of you have experience with this.

You don't know so it's not for you?

Gee, You are saying don't try something because you don't have what it takes. Well how will you ever have what it takes?

Do you think Griz (because this is what you are saying basicly)Is a Tiger Woods in Golf? Maybe he is and maybe he isn't but that doesn't kill his desire to golf.

I am not trying to lead anyone to anything, I just want people to know that if you do something....that is better than doing nothing.

Griz is here because of taking the time to learn and test and has now become an authority. Even you can do it in any niche if you want to.

Some of us will be right there on the front page with him in this niche. You know why? Because they didn't listen to what some people had to say.

I know this is a long tail and Google is a hard nut to crack but if you go to Yahoo.com and search for: how to make money online for beginners, you will see that Griz is #1 and I am #4 on the front page out of 37,800,000 pages.

Too bad I have learned something new.......

I will master it!

Lonnie, where is that link to your online education program?

Cheers,

Dirk

Actually conversion rate of social media traffic is less as compared to traffic from search engines. Website owners and blogger join social media sites for promotion purpose only.

The bear is #3 downunder this sunny morning! Just for the record my blog does not and never has been targetted for "make money online" - do you think I'm stupid? I'm certainly too lazy to go against people like Grizz!

I am in the process of starting a new blog and have found some new keywords which should make me some dollars and again are nowhere close to "make money online" - though it could say its in the MMO/IM niche!

Niche is everything people - my site about hostels in NYC doesn't compete with my Australian travel site- but they are both in the travel niche! That's not to say that a link from one to the other isn't good - and probably better than a link from here - but they don't compete - at all...

Hey Griz. Thanks for the mention and Lawdy, I do declare, I just saw my video embedded here. Don't tell Mrs. Grizzly about the leaked xxx video clip circulating the internet or I'll be in big trouble. Thanks for the rocket fuel my friend.

Everyone that reads this blog should know how to rank for any keyword they want.

It is just a matter of time and effort directed to reaching that goal.

The best thing about a community like this is they work together, not against each other.

The "how to make money online for beginners" keyword that I mentioned above that I am ranking for in my last comment has no back links or supporting sites.

It was very easy to rank for just from on site SEO. Griz should have been laughing is ass off over that.

The point I was trying to put across was that anyone can rank for any keyword they want, some are easy, some take a bunch more time.

If I ever happened to outrank Griz for anything, I am sure he would at least give me a Brownie Button.

The more you do the better you will get.

Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time.

CashCrate is another program similar to Project Payday and they do accept people world wide - it's free to join.

For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.

A Little Heart to Heart

If you have made it this far down the page then I assume you might just be serious about learning how to make a real sustainable living online - as opposed to the thousands of visitors I see daily looking for that "get rich quick" miracle that really doesn't happen without a winning lottery ticket.

You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?

If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.

This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.

Cheers

Griz
