It should be evident by now that I have been trying to demonstrate the power of backlinks when it comes to making money online. It doesn't matter what niche you are in or what form of monetization you are after - without traffic you will starve. You can waste your time courting social traffic only to find out that other bloggers will not spend money on your site, use your affiliate links or click your ads. (or even give you useful links when they do link to you). Or, you can target search engine traffic right from the get go and find out how well targeted traffic converts compared to bloggers. Ranking on top of the search engines will send you a continuous flow of people who are actually looking for what you have.
Most of my readers know this by now. The problem is that most of you are unable to get the kind of backlinks needed to rank well in the serp's.
In most cases you are targeting niches that are too competitive for your resources. I have tip toed around this issue on several occasions, most recently with my credit card post. Many of you are targeting keywords that are dominated by professional marketers and this means that while you are busy getting links from articles and do-follow blogs etc, the big guns are busy buying the types of links that do the most good. This doesn't mean you are doomed but it does mean that at some point you will all have to decide just how far you want to go with your online business. I am not trying to dissuade anyone - just trying to keep things real.
I set up a little contest back in February on a blog called Asia'h Epperson and challenged my readers to outrank my site for the term "Asia'h Epperson". I offered $500 to anyone who could outrank me for the term.
As of this date no one has been able to accomplish the feat.
I will bring the contest to a close at the end of this month - October 2008. I hate leaving things open ended and have decided to split the money between the top three sites as of the end of the month. The highest ranked site will get $350, second will get $100 and the third place position will get $50. I hope this will be amenable to all involved. I had promised not to do anything with the site until a winner came forward but I would like to put the blog to use and can't until this issue is resolved. Should anyone overtake me before the end of the month they will of course get the $500. If this doesn't occur please email me at month's end with your blog and ranking and add a name to your blog so that I can verify who is who in relation to the top finishers. Should you be a winner please acknowledge the receipt in a blog post of your own just so people know I have sent out the cash as promised.
I also thought this would be a good time to explain why you have all had such a hard time overtaking the site. It all comes down to links folks. And speed. And a little luck as well.
First off. The blog was created to take advantage of short term niches. To this end you have to be fast when a popular topic suddenly appears in the news. I was quick and got the best keyword url when I started the blog. In fact the only terms in my URL are the keywords "Asia'h" and "Epperson" - nothing else. http://asiahepperson.blogspot.com/
Always use your keywords in the URL when you can. You can still rank well without them but having the right URL is a big advantage and almost impossible to overcome if the site has the right backlinks.
Btw, did any of you happen to snap up sarahpalin.blogspot.com just asking...
Because I had the right URL, Blog Title and was fast with getting properly anchored links I jumped to the second spot in the serp's instantly. This is where luck came into play. Because I ranked so high the blog was noticed by others - notably the LA Times and AOL.com Television. As a result both these sites linked to my blog and the contest was effectively over before it began.
The LA Times Link.
The AOL.com Link.
Both of these links are worth a ton of juice as both websites have a great deal of trust with Google - regardless of the PR of the page the links are on. Both used the right anchor text in the links.
I got to the top quickly by simply linking to the Asia'h blog from this site. This site also has trust in G's eyes and the link was followed instantly and the Asia'h blog was indexed and ranked within hours. That is the power of having a healthy flagship blog like this one.
The screenshot below shows a partial list of the links the Asia'h blog has. You will noticed that the anchored text used is almost exclusively "Asia'h Epperson". You will also notice that most of the linking pages have no PR at all. I have mentioned this before - the right anchor text is the important part in getting links - not the PR of the page sending the link. PR is great if you get it but isn't necessary to ranking well.
Now some of you may wonder about Google Bombing - ie. too many links, too fast all using the same anchor text. In the case of this blog I was not Google bombed because it is natural to predominantly get links using the right anchor. The keyword is a person's name, the site uses that name in the title and the URL. It would have seemed strange NOT to have got so many perfectly optimized links - what other links could it have got?
In any event the cards were stacked against anyone trying to outrank the blog right from the start.
I realize that most of you don't have the resources to get the links I get but that isn't the point of this. The real point is to concentrate on niches that you can compete in until you build up a healthy stable of sites to draw upon in future. Further more, concentrate on getting what works and don't waste time with other endevours. Like my new WP make money online blog the Asia'h blog didn't require a lot of content to rank well. Both only have 5 posts. Neither have a huge amount of sites linking to them. Asia'h has about 35 links and the Griz blog has about 100. Both are only PR3 sites. The Griz site isn't at the top yet but is well on it's way and now outranks millions of older sites with thousands of links and higher PR.
So what is the common equation - the quality of the backlinks. Specifically I build sites with optimized anchor links. I concentrate on getting backlinks that use my keyword and don't waste time with anything else. This accomplishes a number of things. I get ranked fast and high up in the serp's. It sends me traffic fairly quickly. The traffic is targeted to my keyword. I know what the traffic is looking for and can monetize the sites accordingly.
The Asia'h blog was a dud for making money but so what. I still have a nicely juiced PR3 site that I can use for other things such as sending links or targeting other celeb stories. The point is that if you do things right you never waste your time and continuously build up your network.
Folks - stick with keywords and niches that you can dominate with your current resources. Build your network one site at a time if you have to but make sure you spend time doing the right things. Many of you have more posts than backlinks. What is wrong with that?
I know getting backlinks is tough. I have been trying to build up our little community over the past few months in order to help you achieve better links. If you haven't joined in on our Niche Support program I urge you to. (Note: You can use a different name and email if you wish to keep your identity quiet.) You can read more about it here. Finding Links for Niche Blogs. Also I have provided a page full of bloggers who have quality flagship sites who understand the value of helping each other out. You can visit that page here. Friendz of Griz. If you are new here then spend some time getting to know the blogs I have highlighted and get to know each other as well. Help each other.
On a related note...
Indexing Blogspot blogs.
Denise mentioned that she is having a hard time getting Blogger blogs indexed. Actually a number of readers have brought this up recently. I haven't had any problems myself but assume that G is now making Blogger harder to use for spamming purposes. What I have found is that new blogspot blogs need a few good links in order to get the ball rolling. By this I mean links from an authority site or two. This is what I do with all my new blogs - I send a link from one of my closest related authority sites. I have also found that this seems to keep the new blogs from entering the sandbox in most cases. I still get the odd one sandboxed although they would be the type of niches that raise flags as spam heavy niches. When this happens I work on adding more posts than normal and get a lot of decent links. They usually get de-boxed fairly quickly. One note - I do not monetize any site now until it is firmly ranked and getting targeted keyword traffic. I do believe this makes a huge difference in how well and fast you get indexed and gain rankings in Google. Nothing in the way of proof - it just seems to work well from my experience.
If you don't have an authority site to use then all the more reason to get to know those who do and work on building your own. This is where all those "social" blogging sites you all seem to have can come in handy. If your flagship isn't making money itself don't give up on it - keep building it up and use it to propel new sites into the system.
Btw. I am now building WordPress (ok Terry is building them - I'm just optimizing them) sites and use the exact same system with them as well. It seems to be working.
One last thing for today.
Getting links the white hat way.
I would like to add a page to the new MMO blog listing as many available sources as I can find for getting links. I have my own sources and don't spend a lot of time chasing links like most of you do. Because of this I am falling out of touch with what is available and what is and isn't working these days. To this end if any of you would like to email me with sites, directories, programs etc that you successfully get links (especially anchored links) with I will create a working list for all to use. Yes I'm lazy but in my defense you should all have a better idea of where to find legit white hat links than I do these days. (oooh I didn't just say that out loud - ouch) I spend very little time keeping up with what is available mainly because I don't have too. Those that do please share your findings. You can leave comments on this post or just send me an email with this link. Grizzly I will add the page to Make Money Online with Griz as soon as I get some feedback.
That's it for today.
Cheers
Griz.

It's All in the Back Links
Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home
I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.
I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday
Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time. Their sister program is still available to users in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. (free to join as well) Affiliate Income Partners
CashCrate is another similar program (you get paid to take trial offers for products, services or completing online surveys etc.) Cashcrate does accept people world wide and they have a decent selection for Canadian and UK residents. If you are American then you will benefit the most as you have the most offers to choose from. Btw - it's free to join.
For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.
A Little Heart to Heart
You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?
If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.
This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.
Cheers

Besides making a Squidoo page I have just started making a http://www.tumblr.com page for each niche.
As far as I can tell they are do-follow links.
Anyone else do this or know whether this is a complete waste of time?
Thanks Bruce,
Good idea - it would be nice to hear some feedback on the various methods.
The underground forum folk sent me an email asking what I thought of articlemarketingautomation.com. I am not familiar with it but would like to know if any of you are using it and your thoughts. Apparently Splork knows a bit about it... This Way to Make Money Blogging
I have a review AMA on my blog as well. You can find it by searching for "article marketing automation review" on Google and it is #2 on page one in most data centers. (wish I knew how to do that with everything!)
grizz,
great article. So many people want to do the extravagant things instead of sticking to the basics.
One thing I like about your methods griz is you contantly remind us to stick to the basics. Backlinks.
I very sincirely hope that google does not give you the golden boot like the ones given to courtneytuttle. This is almost like telling google that content does not matter, but backlinks do :)
Splork here. I have flogged and flogged AMA on my blog. It doesn't seem to go over like I thought it should. I have been building blogs to add to the network to the tune of over 200 (and counting) on close to 50 separate IP addresses. On those various and different niches I have over 2,300 articles splashed across these blogs. The articles all appear to be well-written. Those that I have checked seem to have been through the spinner giving me a non-duplicate article.
I cannot for the life of me understand why people are not flocking to add their blogs to the portfolio. I can see no way that the blogs will be flagged by Google if that is the concern. I cannot understand why people are not writing articles and splashing them across all the various blogs that will accept your topic. My articles just keep getting sent out everyday. My best one has been published 112 times (so far) on different blogs. Powerful stuff if you ask me. That is 330+ anchor links to my site.
The spinner is no joke. It does not create a franken article. You re-write each sentence, up to ten times. Think about that. The article is only as good as you write it. But it uses the different sentences in potentially hundreds of variations, depending on how many alternate sentences you give the original. There will be no duplicate content if you take the time to rewrite. And it's easy.
Sorry Griz. More blather here. I think AMA is a beast. Very few of the readers on my blog have shown interest despite my multiple posts though. I'm not certain I've explained the value well or what.
Thanks Bruce,
Here is the link to the DayJobNuker article Article Marketing Automation Review
Have you seen a significant increase in serp rankings?
Medic,
The basics work for me so if it ain't broke...
Nice to see you drop in.
The Anand,
I passed "almost" a long time ago. Content is important but doesn't get you paid. Backlinks do.
I figure its just a matter of time until G slaps me silly anyway so I might as well say what I have to say while somebody is still around here to read it. ;-)
Hey Splork,
I thought that would get your attention. Thanks for the response.
Just one question; have you seen a rise in your serp rankings since using the program. I'm trying to gauge what kind of link juice the sites in the system have. Mostly low/no PR new sites? Also how crappy are the articles posted on your blogs?
Hi folks
I use Article Marketing Automation and I must say I am very pleased with it so far. I'll try to be short:
-you can send unlimited number of posts
-you can spin posts and get unique posts and different anchors
-you choose how much posts you would like to release and when
-some of blogs that publish my posts are PR1 and PR2
-you get published on 15 sites within 3 days, and that number keeps growing
-you can host other peoples articles and create numerous farms for free
I hope AMA guys wont raise the price, since $47 per month suits me perfectly :)
Thanks James,
Sounds like you guys don't find the price unreasonable. I hate monthly fees unless the product can deliver. Same question - have you seen a noticeable rise in your serp rankings from the links gained?
Well the whole content vs backlinks topic has been flogged to death, but I'll share a thought or two that mirror Griz with regard to content.
I've started to write extremely long posts rambling on and on about my topic. By extremely long, I mean 1200-1800 words. I know a few of the posts on this blog are double or triple that, but long for me.
What I find is I get tons of longtail searches with any number of combinations. I try to slip in all kinds of related terms to the main search phrase I'm posting about.
This is how I've been able to get traffic without having to work like crazy building links. Sure its a different kind of work, but it seems easier for me.
Blogger ate my AMA post, so I'll shorten it.
You get to create unique posts to the extreme, since their system is even better then what Jetspinner does. And those 300 words posts are spread across different C class IPs quite fast. I usually get 15 posts out in 3 days only. And some of these blogs are PR1 and even PR2.
If you don't use AMA, join right now. Not only you get links, but get your farms filled by other people. Can it get better?
Aaronk,
It works like a charm doesn't it. Long posts provide so much fodder for G and you will be surprised at just how many long tails you get ranked for. Most, you would never think of targeting.
Hey Griz,
I have been kind of lurking here for a few months now and have finally decided that lurking is no way to be part of a community!
I have tried the whole long post thing too like Aaronk, but it is on a local niche lawyer blog. I was at #4 for a longtail after a post and an article run but then it jumped to like the 17th page on G. I have a feeling that the long posts may only really start working out for me after G thinks that I am no longer spam. But I look forward to seeing how it works out.
I absolutely hate monthly fees too that is why I was happy I got into Article Marketer for life before they raised the fees.
Problem is, then AMA comes out and it might be better.
Almost all the blogs my articles were published on are PE0 with a PR1 and PR2 thrown in occasionally. Don't expect your articles to go out on great blogs because no one who owns a flagship blog of any type would open it up to AMA (I sure wouldn't anyway)
No rise in SERPs for me yet that I know of.
Joe,
You think right - anything "Law" related gets treated as spam until you have amassed enough content and decent links. Expect a lot of bouncing about in the serp's until you get some keyword authority for your terms.
Bruce - DJN
Thanks for the answer. I didn't think the blogs would be cream of the crop but wondered just how much juice they do have. Still a link is a link is a link and all the better if you have the right anchor. Let me know if you do see a rise in the serp's - curious as to how long the links will take to get credited by G.
hi grizz,
You're talking about "decent links". What's your definition of a decent link? Is it a link from a high PR site (how high?) related to your niche?
Hey Griz,
I'm not exactly new here (well, I've been reading and re-reading your posts for a couple of months or so anyway) but I've never commented.
I guess this comment changes that.
I've taken your advice and built a blog dealing with a specific brand and model of motorcycle and focused on that keyword along with various secondary keyword and any "long tails" I could think of.
This blog is a little over a month old but it ranks quite well for most secondary keywords and you'd be surprised (okay, you wouldn't but I am) at the long tails that gets people to my site. Crap I never would have thought of in a million years. While I rank on the first and second pages with a lot of these secondary keywords and long tails, often occupying the first or second spot and sometimes multiple places with articles or double-indexed posts and whatnot, I am nowhere in sight for my main keyword.
I assume that it is these secondaries and long tails that keep me out of the sandbox but as far as I can tell, my main term is still stuck playing by its lonesome in that sandy playground.
Interestingly, if I search for my keyword in its plural form, I'm on page one...
Anyhow, I'm just thinking out loud and thought this would be a good a post as any to introduce myself.
Sorry for being an off topic windbag!
As for backlinks, I've done a couple of Squidoo pages and submitted some articles. I've also submitted to website directories and commented on a few forums. Nothing spectacular, but it seems to be working great!
Have a good one and thanks for all the freaking wonderful blogging goodness!
As far as AMA goes, I have not notices a magical jump in the serps, but I am moving up on one keyword that has huge competition. I was near 150 and now I'm near 70. Hopefully this will keep up...
As far as longtails and the serps, I cant really tell if AMA is helping or if it is just the long posts that I talked about earlier. I'm not consistently hitting the top 3 so I'm not yet sure how much value these links have.
More importantly, the blog building feature (making my own farm) of AMA is what I really like. I'm willing to stay in a year to get a huge farm built with little to no effort
Hey Griz. Splork here. Honestly I think for right now they are mostly low PR blogs. Folks are slinging them like mad due to a contest being run. I haven't written as many articles as I should since I'm adding blogs for the contest. But a couple of articles I wrote seemed to lift two of my blogs to top 10 for some pretty cool phrases. They each were languishing around page 3-4. They are both sitting at number 7.
The surprising thing is the articles are actually very good. I linked to one of my blogs if you want to check out the quality of that particular niche. People are adding videos to their articles. I sometimes go back through and add photos and links using Zemanta and Link Luv. They aren't junk at all. I've even had to throttle back the number of articles that get added to the blogs to one a day per blog. I like to go back through them and check them out and add photos or tags or whatever to improve them even more.
Cedric,
A perfect link would be a pr10 link from a related site using your anchor text. We, however, will set our sites lower.
A decent link is any link from anywhere that uses your anchor text.
If it contains your anchor and has PR even better.
If it is from a related niche using your anchor text better still.
and if it has PR and is from a related niche and uses your anchor - your laughing.
The important thing is to get links with your anchor text - everything more is gravy.
Milkman,
Its doubtful that you are sandboxed if your longtails are ranking that well. I suspect your main keyword has a fair bit of competition and it will just take a while to improve serp position. Just keep working on backlinks using the main keyword.
Thanks for dropping in and saying hi. There are quite a few silent readers so its nice to hear from some once in a while.
Good luck with the site.
Thanks Aaronk,
I had missed the "blog building" part - that does sound interesting. How does that work exactly?
Splork,
I checked the articles. Hard to believe that was spun? Are all the articles spun or is it optional? Certainly not what I expected to see.
Since I started using dragon naturally speaking, I've been making very long winded posts in a few minutes. And very easily too. If anyone has a hard time writing, talk it out and it's a piece of cake!
Splork here again. I've been targeting the same niche over quite a few blog hosts: Self hosted, Blogger, Tumblr, etc. And I see the same article come through, but it has been spun. I'd say at least 50% has been spun and that's a conservative estimate. Believe me. They make it really easy to rewrite your original.
The article quality has been very good. If it sucks: delete it. The only thing you can't do is remove the links. I even write my own title if the one provided is bad and doesn't target a keyword I want to target.
One thing that will amaze you is the horrible anchor links. People still don't get it. They'll link "click here" or some variation, thinking that someone is actually going to read that crap and click over to their website. Their stuff is good, but not THAT good. The game is played for backlinks, not direct traffic generation, which is what many believe.
Grizzly,
The blog building part allows you to set up blogs with remote publishing API's that will automatically post the articles that people submit. You can use blogger blogs, tumblr, or self-hosted wordpress blogs.
Once the blog is set up, you submit the info to AMA under whatever niche you want. You can go general, like "home improvement" or "communications." Or you can get keyword specific. You can designate articles to drop in automatically, or you can manually approve them. I do the manual approve method just to do a quick looksee over the content. Takes about 5 minutes to have about 20 articles posted over my blog network. Hard work......NOT!
As far as the spinning goes, each article gives you a %spun reading to let you know if the author did any extra work on it. Quite a few come thru with a 0% spun, I don't approve any of those. At least put a little spin on things guys.
Underground there's even more to the story...
Griz,
Very insightful post! I just sent you an email about checking out one of my sites. I remember you mentioned to put up a comment because you get so many emails per day. =)
Thanks!
Oh I am late to the party! I am totally head over heels in love with AMA and have been flogging it on my blog - though I figured I couldn't compete with Splork et al in the serps!
Oh and yes there is an affiliate program - which is bringing the price of the monthly down quite nicely! Its optional to spin articles but I don't auto accept posts onto my sites so when I approve I see the % of spun content! Ive only rejected a handful for quality - and Im a writer and picky! I have rejected more just because they don't fit my niche - but its sweet.
This program got my farm started -you submit blogs (this is free BTW ) self-hosted WP, blogspot, tumbr - you set up what selection criteria you want for your blog and then you just watch the articles come in - I add the odd picture just to make it look good My general broad niche sites have 50/60 articles now and I reject anything with <30% unique content.
Im yet to see the move up the SERPS but at this stage I am more interested in building the farm: the agriculture prices always go up in recession yeah LOL
Not Splork here (Robert), but since others are flogging their reviews... :)
The spinning is optional, and when you get an email that articles are ready for your approval, there is a line telling you what percentage they were re-written. I personally spend the time making a large array of choices available. You don't necessarily have to re-write each sentence; for example, I generally provide so many word/phrase combinations it doesn't even ask me to re-write sentences. :) For my totally hands off blogs, it is set up to auto approve, but on the blogs I have set up for approval I check out the articles more closely. Some people don't re-write at all, so I reject that article, some people literally flood you with decent articles but don't spread them out, seeming to take a bunch they had somewhere else and just dump them. Some don't have much sense of keyword optimization for the links, and also link to home pages instead of deep linking. To me, the blog-building aspect is just a nice extra, where the real focus is on distributing your articles. If you have high standards and a clue it's a great help. Ignorant folks may not use it to the fullest advantage, but that won't stop those who can.
Hey Grizz,
I am using the free AMA membership that just lets you have articles submitted to your blogs , effectively giving you free, original content. I like that I can have the articles submitted to my email addie and from there accept or decline them instantly from my email with one click. The system is set up so that the AMA site has your login info for direct posting. I accept articles to the half dozen blogs set up for it about 75% of the time. There is a stat with each email telling me what % the article has been spun so if you are worried that it might not be original contemt because it was not spun you can decline the piece. So far I am happy to have others fill my less important blogs with new content - whoops, I mean that uhm - er, every blog of mine is oh so important...well at least in the grand scheme of things, lol.
BTW, I also heartily recommend the use of the Google adsense keyword tool now that it has been revamped - esp. for cheap buggers like me!
Stephen
Dunno if I covered it Griz, but the blog building part is simply the article distribution network. In the free membership, you can sign up blogs using a publishing API to receive articles. You don't have to pay the $47 a month to distribute articles (though to me it's by far the more important part of the deal) if you don't want. You can just sit back and let others populate your various niches with their articles on your blogs. You can change or add the content if you want, so long as you don't copy it elsewhere or change the links. It's still your site, so you add in your own posts too, or just be lazy and set it and forget it.
Grizz, I just joined AMA, so can't speak for the results with regards to SERPs. But it does look promising and since every article I send out and receive from others look really really legitimate and useful, I really think that part should take care of itself. You can add blogs of your own, whether people (or even yourself, but that's not the point) can add articles to it. You'll be giving them backlinks, but in the process you can add a couple of extra blogs to your collection, with 'free content' - you know how boring it can be trying to come up with a legit article on stuff you're not really interested in but wanna make money from. As long as you do not touch the original links from the original authors, you can do whatever else you wish to the articles, changing the content, etc.
Also, note something Splork mentioned on his blog post, about what he noticed regarding the articles (and backlinks/anchor text) submitted. It is very true, and while you might think you could end up giving an advantage to your competition, the reality might be different.
Griz,
I just wanted to thank you for all of the information you have provided.
I recently graduated from college and decided that I wanted to try to give internet marketing a try. I didn't want to go into the traditional job and without being tied down by the financial strains of a normal adult I was able to give it a try.
It has been just over 6 months now and I broke $100 in earnings for a day for the first time just yesterday.
I owe it all to you and the information you have provided me. Without your blog and the other resources you have directed me to I never could have been so successful so fast.
Thanks again! Me (along with alot of others) truly appreciate what you are doing!
Grizz said: "It works like a charm doesn't it. Long posts provide so much fodder for G and you will be surprised at just how many long tails you get ranked for. Most, you would never think of targeting."
I'll second that! This seems to me to be a word game - match up with words that people search for and that advertisers pay for. The first gets you traffic, the second gets you paid. Writing long posts gives loads more chances to both promote your main keyword(s) and accidentally discover treasure you and likely nobody else would ever guess at.
From a standing start 3 weeks ago my traffic and revenue are (though still modest) steadily climbing, and much of it from a long tail term that is only incidental to the main keyword. In my limited experience, Google tells you what's actually working, building on that is mostly a matter of going with the flow.
BTW Grizz are you still looking for a "only show ads to search traffic" feature for Blogger? You mentioned it in passing some while back.
Another AMA user here - I'm just using the free service to fill my farm, and I've set them to auto accept so I don't ever have to worry about them (I spent the first couple of weeks manually checking them to make sure the quality's good - it is). I'm really happy with them and have added lots of blogs with more to come, and I'll start adding my own links and articles into them (my blogs) soon.
BTW, you can change the articles submitted to your site (except the article links) including adding your own link, so if you've got one that's relevant to your own niche you can just pop a link in there.
As always golden nuggets Griz.
I am using article submitter platinum and article marketer for links right now.
Directory submission:

I am building wp blogs and when I see results I will report to you boss.
Everyone,
Thanks for all the AMA info - there is little doubt that you are all finding it quite useful. Not something I hear very often when it comes to these types of programs. I may have to get a membership, now who's link do I use... lol.
Kulekat,
Yes - a show ads to search traffic for blogger would be nice. What have you got?
Griz great post as always.
How will one know they are being sandboxed? I am just guessing my blog about Kava is being sandboxed =(
Kava,
It doesn't look like you are sandboxed - your indexed and showing all posts when doing a site: check on G. I checked your backlinks - only 8 so this is where you need to concentrate. Just get some more decent links and you should rise to the top quite easily - there is very little competition in your niche, 500k.
Backlinks and more backlinks. ;-)
Quote - It doesn't look like you are sandboxed - Quote
Thanks for that
Quote - Backlinks and more backlinks. ;-) -Quote
I will try work on that thanks,
I read somewhere someone suggested this tool which will look for blogs with your targeted key-words that have "do follow" links, the tool only accepts "one" word, I decided i might share it here if no one discovered it yet, I just tried using it last week.
Here is the link http://clicklifemedia.com/blogsearch/beta mind you i have no affiliate with this just sharing something.
Ta
@Kava - Do you mean dofollow diver? It's pretty good for finding blogs although if you check some dofollow blogs are actually nofollow!

Thanks Grizzly I found your Make Money Online For Begginers blog about 6 weeks ago and check it out regularly usualy reading and learning something I can use. There is so much good information and by the time I read your post and follow a few links, Make Money Online, Niche Support, Finding Links for those Niche Blogs, Friends of Griz, I want to comment but info. overload stops me. Today I took a break after reading, and so was able to comment. You are appreciated Thanks
I have to second Ecologger's comment.
I too have been coming and reading the wealth of information you have provided. It is just short of genius how you are able to give the reader valuable information and at the same time "write for the SERPS" to get the results you want from an SEO perspective.
I would also like to stop and thank you for the superb IM information. I may not comment often; but, I always visit and read your blog.
I know I am one part of many.
This discussion on AMA is especially intriguing. Griz I think your question is an important one about seeing results in the SE rankings as a result of AMA links. That's the whole point, isn't it?
It does sound like an amazing tool. I may start out with the free part first to get a feel for the system.
Best,
Bridget
Hi Lissie - here I commented above and mistyped the kw and forgot to sign! I am pleasently surprised, well OK in f..king shock, to discover kw's for which I added one article to AMA just over 2 weeks ago have suddenly gone from nowhere to page 1/2 - these are kw's I having worked previously on existing sites!
Hi Grizz
Thanks for all the tips.
I've got a site about Warren Buffett aka the Oracle of Omaha, how many backlinks will I need to get it to the first page ? And how can I find out which page it is on now ? Any info. much appreciated.
Thanks for the great info as usual Grizz. I'm about one week into my first blog now, so hopefully I'll get out of the sandbox soon. This is a good reminder to focus on what really matters: backlinks. I've emailed a few people on the niche support site, and we'll take it from there!
Griz: On Sunday one of my niche sites received a link from the entertainment section of an online newspaper site (according to the site it's a member of the Sun-Times News Group). Unfortunately, the anchor text used was "interesting site".
I'm wondering if you think it's okay to ask a site like that to change the anchor text?
EcoLogger,
Thanks for the kind words and nice to hear from a few more of my silent readers. Welcome to our little corner of the blogosphere.
Bridget,
Thank you as well for those nice words. Genius... um some might just say long winded. lol.
I'm going to look into AMA myself. If it turns out to be junk I have a list of trusted friends above to seek out my vengeance on. Grrrr...
I'm sure it will have a few benefits given the accounts provided.
Thanks for stopping in and all the best.
Lissie,
Oh my... the F word out of you. I didn't think they used that term down under. lol.
I think it's safe to say you have all put the bug in my ear about AMA. Time to test it out me thinks.
Value Investor,
You'll need as many as it takes. If you have SEO Elite you can check your keyword rankings. I don't know of a free tool but I'm sure there must be something out there - anyone?
Malcolm,
The niche support page is a good place to start. We have been adding people daily and have a pretty decent sized list already.
Good luck with the backlinks.
Chanya,
Sent you an email but to recap...
Yes, ask if they will change the anchor.
Wendy,
If you have found some popular keywords then definately snap them up and create a blog or two around them. You can use the new sites to link to your money site or you could monetize them directly if possible.
A "spun" article is simply an article that is re-written just enough to avoid being a duplicate of the original. If you were to submit an article to a directory you can take a post on your site and rewrite it using enough synonyms to make it different - this is spinning an article.
I prefer Blogger just because it's faster and takes less work - I'm just lazy. lol.
All the best with your blogs.
Hi Grizz,
I have started a few blogger blogs recently and posted a couple of times in each. All of them are indexed without any backlinks. I think it took a month, I never checked. Need to search with url without "http://" on google. One of them has been blocked as spam, asked for review.
Upon research, came to know sites ranking for very low-paying keywords also have paid backlinks. It is either pay or grow vegetables kind of situation.
Thanks for your help and guidance.
You learn something new everyday. I appreciate this post. Thanks for putting it out there. I have heard so many different opinions on the subject...
I see you use SEO Elite, I have been putting it off but I think it is time to pick up this tool.
Looking forward to being a part of this community!
The site which has been blocked as spam has been released after reveiw within two days.
Another quick question on linking - if the link comes from a UK or other country site or someone wants to link from one of those countries, but the site is in your niche is that okay? I didn't know if UK or other countries would hurt my site if I only have US customers. I am thinking of my business site here.
Grizz,
I thought you would appreciate this. I was analyzing a website I wanted to outrank( pg 2 or 3) for a local niche. I came across an earily looking familiar blog on blogger. The blog did not have any comments. I asked if they were a friend of Grizz. The person ended up contacting me through your other site. Too funny.
BTW.. If you used Grizz "privacy policy" you may want to find another or change it up significantly. I was easily able to identify some blogspot sites that I am sure are members(including mine).
I'll understand if you edit this message grizz to remove the privacy policy portion. I would not want to hurt any of your followers.
Hi Griz,
I'm a newcomer to your blog-wow! great info...but a little disheartening. Only a little, though. The fact is my partner and i do make money online, and we have discovered an amazing avenue to get there even faster than we did the old fashioned way - with a lot of research, hard work (implementing what we learned), and time. Okay-here's the scoop, there is a web building company called (removed by Griz), My partner and I highly encourage people to sign up with (removed by Griz) through our website, (removed by Griz)
If people sign up through us we will offer a nice little discount on our web packages. The reason we love (removed by Griz) is because of their extensive step-by-step (idiot-proof) program which has an amazing built in analytic program (I know they have some kind of arrangement with Wordtracker-among others) so that your page is optimized to Google's high standards. I have been into Internet marketing for the past 8 years or so, and (removed by Griz) blows any web Building service out of the water. The caveat is some of the tutorials are a little difficult, and the customer support isn't so hot. But once you get over the hump, it's smooth sailing-as long as you keep writing. They recommend 250 pages of great content. (removed by Griz) has the same philosophy as we do to making money on the web-provide quality content, with no tricks, and the traffic will time. Patience is required-no doubt about it. But if you follow the steps between (removed by Griz) and us (removed by Griz)-stock market decline or not- you will start to develop a nice little retirement fund in a couple of years. Anyway thanks for the great blog, and for the opportunity to put in my two cents.
To you success, Kim
Hey Grizz,
Two questions for ya.
1) Long tail keywords. You mention them a lot, and I'm wondering how to get them. Based on my "primary keyword", how do I figure out a list of long-tail keywords I should target in my posts?
2) Post length. You often mention why you like long posts. However, in one of your older posts you mention that with Google's new ranking algorithm, if you get 100 to 150 posts on a blog, then once its been around for 6 months or a year you'll automatically get PR 4.
So the question is: If I write a long post with lots of good long tail keywords, etc, is there any downside to splitting it into 3 or 4 smaller posts in order to generate more "separate pages" on my blog in pursuit of that 100 post goal?
Hope that makes sense. Let me know if not. And thanks again.
-Malcolm
Wow, "Kim's" post was pretty elaborate spam. Jeez.
I wouldn't think the privacy policy being identical across sites would be meaningful, since there are so many templates out there for them. It's also not terrible important content, as far as that goes. I would suspect that even if you put the same email address (and possibly even site name, if you forget) that it wouldn't make all that much difference.
I'm gonna go out and buy me some of that removed by Griz product. It sounds great!! Love the piss in your pocket introduction before he launched into the spam - nice touch.
BTW, I too have signed up with AMA for receiving articles as content to my sites. Sticking my own links into the supplied articles is a whole lot easier than making up my own stuff.
Wendy,
It makes no difference where your backlinks come from as far as countries go.
Asthma,
I wouldn't worry about the duplicate privacy policy page as far as Google goes but if you are trying to hide from others you may, as you say, change it up a bit. Use it as a guide and customize it as you see fit.
Anonymous (Kim)
Thank you for the content - most spammers are short on usable text and big on links. I suppose your content isn't original though - how many other sites have you (tried) posting it to?
Btw - the program you are flogging is crap - MLM pyramid junk. Good luck with that but I will not be sending any of my friends down that path.
In future could you please just add the (removed by Griz) phrase when posting to save me time.
Have a great day Kim! ;-)
Malcolm,
Long Tails...
Suppose my main keyword is "make money online" or "make money"
I want as many long tails as I can find that also use my main keyword in the phrase - like so...
how to make money
how to make money online
how to make money online for beginners
make money online for beginners
earn money online (related long tail)
how to earn money online (related long tail)
making money online (related)
makes money online (related)
make money online using... (add various products)
make money online with... (again add as you see fit)
ways to make money online
etc...
I could go on for pages finding long tails for my main keywords but this is how I build them. In most cases they contain or are related to my main keyword.
If your main keyword is "Applesauce" the same system applies...
How to make applesauce
how to make applesauce sweet
how to make applesauce sour
applesauce ingredients
what is the best way to make applesauce
etc...
If I write a post I make it long and just talk about everything I can think of related to applesauce. In the process I will use dozens of long tails - some intentionally and some not. In the end G will pick out several that you hadn't even thought of or noticed.
As for PR I mentioned that if you have enough posts and age you will likely achieve PR without doing much else. This info was for the social bloggers who put a lot of stock in PR.
PR has very little meaning as far as ranking goes and I don't chase it at all. I am after keyword authority which is what gets you ranked in the serp's.
Forget PR - write long posts to get long tails ranked and to bring in traffic. Get backlinks using all the long tails in the anchor. This is how you make money.
Robert,
I just had to post the spam - too much content to delete. lol. I agree with your Privacy policy statement - it's not a big issue.
Damien,
Hehe.. you catch on fast my friend.
Hi,
My blog doesn't get many visits or has many readers. I also guess that I won't make "tons" of cash from it namely because it's art related, but I'm writing about something I like and it has quality content (so I hope).
My objective is an organic growth.
You got some really interesting articles on your blog.
Take care,
José
You don't rank for "removed by Griz" yet, but tomorrow's another day. ;)
Removed by Griz,
Sh*t... you went and made me spit coffee all over the damn keyboard...
Thanks for the quick reply Griz. Part of why I'd like to achieve PR is to have a site I can use in the future to get other sites listed more quickly (my flagship site). Having a PR 4 site would be useful for helping the rank of other sites in the future, right? But what you say about focusing on the serps makes sense. So really, if I'm trying to build a flagship that will also make money, maybe I should be doing both?
With regard to building backlinks, I've got another related question, and it has to do with duplicate content.
I'm writing articles, and generating original content. So I'm not questioning the importance of that, my question is this:
Say I write five articles in a week. Is it better to:
1) Submit each of the five articles to only one article directory, for a total of five submissions with zero duplicate content? or
2) Submit each article to multiple directories (say 10 each), for many more submissions (in this case 50), but as a result generating duplicate content?
In other words, even though I'm generating original content, I will always be able to post to more article directories if I'm willing to post each article in multiple locations. But I don't know if that duplicate content will then hurt the quality of my backlinks and rank?
Lemme know if that's clear, and thanks again.
Thanks for the great posts and especially thanks for the info you put into the comments. For a lazy guy you do a lot of work to help us newbies in the game. I would hate to see what you could do if you were hard working. LOL !
Also I have a blog that I believe is being smart priced, earning between 30 and 50 cents per click. But every once in a wile I get clicks for $1.30, If you have the time could you check it out for me and give a couple suggestions to get back on track. Let me know if you can take a look and how to flag the email so you can catch it. Thanks again for the work you do at the blog.
Ding! #1 ranking for removed by Griz! You're gonna be rolling in the traffic NOW, man! You're quite welcome, btw. ;)
Malcolm, that's one of the issues AMA is intended to address. It distributes the articles, but you can spin them (alter words and phrases, even sentences and paragraphs) so they AREN'T duplicate content. Additionally, you get up to 3 links per article that you can use to target your keywords and phrases. Of course, it's $47 a month, but I think it's worth it. See any of the several reviews listed further up on this page.
Malcolm, You could always sign up with JetSpinner and spin your articles so that they have a certain percentage of differences - enough so that they won't trigger the duplicate content problem.
It takes a little time to insert the alternate sentences, phrases, words, etc. but it gets you any number of similar articles to post. Oh yeah, and it's free.
Hi Grizz,
What is the best way to track traffic with a blogspot blog? I'm kinda to new to blogspot. Until now I've been using a wordpress.com blog where I can view my traffic in the stats section of my dashboard. Blogspot doesn't have this feature so I'm at a loss so to speak.
Thanks!
"In future could you please just add the (removed by Griz) phrase when posting to save me time."
Absolutely classic, man. That's comedy. :D
Good article. I would have to say that in today's overcrowded make money online blog explosion, content is not king, but promotion, back links, and SEO are the new rulers.
Robert and Damien:
Being a newbie, I'm unfamiliar with the idea of "spinning". Is it basically a program that takes an article you've written and replaces words with synonyms, etc?
How much do you actually have to change in an article to avoid it being flagged as duplicate content?
Thanks!
-Malcolm
You have to give it variants though. There might be automated types out there to spin articles, but you wouldn't have anything that made much sense. I'm not sure what percentage you need, but AMA tells me mine are typically 100% or more, so I don't have to worry about it.
Good post. I'm just starting out, and it's definitely the building up of good blogs for quality backlinks that seems to be the hardest part. Especially on a shoe string budget. Thanks for all the great advice, Grizz, it's much appreciated!
This is really helpful. It's confusing but it helps.
okay, quick and easy question for anyone who knows the answer:
one of the pages of my first site finally showed up in google today (sweet!). but only if i type the main site address in (e.g. [site].blogspot.com)
so i'm guessing this means i'm still in the sandbox, but
1) How do I confirm this? and
2) Once I'm out of the sandbox, how do I figure out what page of the SERPs I'm on? If you're buried on page 40, it'll take a hell of a long time to figure that out clicking through the google serps...
is there a quick and easy way to find out your rank in the results for a given search term?
Grizz, you are truly the master of ranking in the serps. I wish could get a Vulcan mind-meld with you someday to suck all that info out of your head and into mine.
I wrote an article that may help folks understand some of the problems with article spinning and Article Marketing Automation. Some folks simply do not leverage that $47 a month they are spending...check it out at Articles and Article Spinning 101 for Article Marketing Automation
Nice favicon and post icon. Careful or you'll end up making this blog too pretty!
I wonder how many visitors have clicked on the bear to see if it takes them to a hidden page... LMAO!
Terry
This is my first time to stay in this blog and I think I'm stock here. I'm new in blogosphere and I'm learning so much. What you did with asiahepperson blog is impressive. And the best thing about that is you share your knowledge and technics. Thanks Grizz.
Of course no one will beat your blogspot because Google the company owns the company Blogger! blogspots always get higher bc it benefits Google. Google is Blogger
I was just wondering how much click you get on your Google adsense with your http://asiahepperson.blogspot.com/.I realy think only few people are interested on Asia so you'll definite get a good rank Grizz since only few will be interested to make a blog or site about one celebrity unless your blog is about Britney Spears or Paris Hilton, but as you've said it's hard if you are targetting a competitive niche.
Since a lot of site have created "make money online" content, do you still have a good position on this blog Grizz? It's really confusing my friend. Clear me on this.
By the way, how are you. I saw your site on my EC and though of visiitng you. I will put your link on my blogroll so I can remember to visit you whenever I have the chance. Thanks Grizz and have a great weekend.
Stock,
You can track your stats in Blogger using Statcounter - a free stat program that you can learn more about here. The link below will show you where to get it and install it on Blogger.
How to Track your Blogger Stats
Malcolm,
I'm not sure if there are any free programs (there probably are) for tracking your serp positions for various keywords but SEO Elite does the job - for what it is worth SEO and Keyword Elite are two programs worth buying if you have the cash. SEO Elite can find your serp ranking in a few seconds.
Mark Perkins,
So why hasn't another blogspot blog beat my ranking? Your evaluation is a bit too black/white as there are many factors in gaining top serp position - having a Blogger blog will not get you anywhere - having the right backlinks will.
Health for Life, (Tey)
Hi Tey, nice to hear from you and glad to see you are still plugging away. Btw,I don't run adsense on the Asia'h site.
The point of creating the Asia'h blog was to see if my readers could outrank me in a very easy (non-competitive) niche. There was no point in having them try to outrank me in a competitive niche.
As for this blog - it dominates the make money niche with dozens of keywords on page 1 of the serp's.
Thanks for stopping in Tey - hope all is well with you.
Grizz,
I finally for the first time took and moved a blog to the first page. I am right below a site that has it's name in the domain name. I started the blog in July 08. I am targeting a medium size city for bankruptcy. It's a small success. The blog has only 4 posts and out ranks other sites with more links.
BTW.. I thought you might laugh. Using keyword Elite I came across one of our members sites as I was targeting looking for links to out rank a site. They hooked me up with a link. I only said "do you follow grizz" too funny.
My intent is to build a couple different blogs and then build a domain and sell advertising on the domain and/or sell it to a law firm. I am now off the fence.. and starting to build. Thanks my friend for the free training
given the title of the post, I just wanted to head on in and publicly say thanks to Griz, who despite being at the top of the pile still takes the time give out link love.
In answer to your question about sources for white hat links, I don't really have any that you haven't outlined yet, but I have to say, despite not being a backlink, a site of mine has a link on a wikipedia entry and even though it doesn't get me any higher in the serps, it does bring me a reasonable number of visitors every day. Part of this is because wikipedia ranks highly for the targeted term and the site I have is filled with quality original content so the wikipedia-guardians left the link in. Just a thought as an additional traffic source.
Thank you so much for your help Grizz! Statcounter is really cool!
Hey Grizz-
I've been reading through your stuff for about two weeks now (I read these first couple articles and then went back to day 1 and I'm working my way forward-- I'm up to Nov. 07, haha). Anyways, I posted my link on a bunch of directories as you had stated as well as articles on various websites (written slightly differently) and I had gotten indexed and put on Google, but for some reason I just recently got taken off and I have no idea why. Any thoughts on this?
Thanks,
Andy
thanks for useful posting, your basic explanation very important for me....
slick post.
one of the mistakes i've been making unfortunately is targeting quantity over quality in terms of backlinks. most of my anchor text isn't helpful at all (usually the name, kouji).
i'll try to do a better job of getting myself backlinks with targeted anchor text. thanks for the great advice. :)
Seems the whole mob got distracted with AMA and missed the invite to submit sources of good backlinks?
I have been examining this gold plated source CommentLuv Guarantees Premium Keyword Back Links in a post today - it seems to me to exactly fit your specifications in the post - ("the right anchor text is the important part in getting links - not the PR of the page sending the link") - of sources of good back links.
Thanks Rhys - the conversation did seem to wander off from the topic at hand. Lol.
I have added your post to my link resources page on the MMO Griz blog. http://makemoneyonlinegrizzly.com/link-resources/
Let me know if you would prefer a different anchor.
Thanks again Rhys.
Hi Again Griz! -
Thanks heaps for the link.
It always blows me away how many readers miss the diamonds lying among the 'gravel'! Good thing they do, when you think about it, or the competition would be really fierce - just imagine if ALL your readers took your advice to heart!
Hey Griz,
Mark again from Duoblogger. We made a problogger flame post and it seemed to get his attention ;) - he made 3 comments even larger than the post itself, just funny to see how people defend the a-listers selling crap.
Oh and let's see if we can rank for "problogger sucks" keywords (if you allow it) :D
Anyway was wondering if I would send you an email or not, about adding my new project to your niche building page. You probably have your mail box spammed full so I'll do it the comment way.
