Google Keyword Tool with Search Volume

Many of you have probably heard that Google's Keyword Tool has now added search volume. For those that haven't this is a major upgrade and I am mentioning this due to the number of emails I get asking about what keyword tools to use. It seems that not everyone is aware of what Google has just done.

In the past you could use the Keyword Tool in order to find related keywords in order to target your adwords campaigns. Google would provide a list of terms as well as show you how competitive each term was in the form of a little green bar - much like the PR bar. The problem was that this only told you a term had more or less competition than other terms. In other words it basically told you whether there were a lot of other adword campaigns targeting a keyword. This was fine if you ran adword campaigns. The shortfall has been the lack of actual search traffc numbers. Most of us don't run adwords campaigns (PPC) but rather want to know how many searches a keyword gets each month in order to create Adsense blogs. We don't need to know how many adword advertisers there are aside from knowing that a few exist. We want to know how many people are looking for the keywords we build our blog around.

Now Google is finally releasing a monthly estimate of actual searches done. This means that you no longer have to buy a program like Keyword Elite to give you this info. This doesn't render keyword elite useless though as it still has many other functions that are useful in regards to keyword research that isn't available elsewhere for free. It does mean that beginners can finally access search data for free from a reliable source - the best source in fact. Google.

I have compared a few lists between Keyword Elite and Google's Keyword Tool and the numbers are significantly different - not a surprise though as only Google will have estimates that come close to reality.

I ran the term "How to Make Money" through both programs and have posted the results below. I was always aware that the numbers provided by Keyword Elite were severely low in the past based on my own stats.

Here are the results for last month provided by Keyword Elite.

I picked the term "How to Make Money" because it is a term that I rank number 1 or 2 for in most data centers. I know how many visitors I had last month searching for this term. My own stats added up to just over 9200 visitors for that term. Keyword Elite estimated the "Total" traffic for the term last month as 7450 searches. I don't get all the traffic for the term but clearly I received far more than what the estimate states. I have long noticed this in regards to the estimates released by Keyword Elite and hence have known that the numbers are usually only a fraction of real traffic. I didn't know how low the estimates were however but now I do.

The image below shows Google's estimate for "How to Make Money".

As you can see Keyword Elite provided only a third of the real traffic. Google estimates 22,000 searches and this makes more sense and jives with the traffic I see. Position 1 should capture at least half the total traffic and I do in a rough sense. It's not exact as I bounce back and forth between the top 2 spots.

I have compared several other keywords that I rank well for and the Google search results do appear pretty accurate which of course they should - who would know better than Google?

The end result is that I encourage you all to take advantage of this resource. You can now know far better than before just how much traffic any particular keyword might be expected to produce. This is one of if not the most important factors to know before you start building your blogs. And it's free.

You can find Google's Keyword Tool here.

On another issue - let's talk about Alexa. Have any of you managed to figure out what the hell they are doing. I am mystified by the results I get from them. I see huge swings from day to day and yet my traffic is pretty much stable from day to day; pretty much the same amount of uniques, return visitors and page views and yet one day I will rank 27,000 and the very next day 450,000. I have been assuming that the "new" sampling they use has a few bugs in it to account for these ridiculous numbers. Since I began the new MMO blog I am even more mystified. The new blog is averaging a few hundred daily uniques and this blog averages several thousand. So why is my new blog kicking this blogs ass in the Alexa rankings?

The stats for yesterday for this blog.

Same day stats for Make Money Online with Grizzly

Just curious what everyone thinks of the NEW Alexa rankings. Do any of you find them accurate in relation to your own stats? Are you getting wild swings as well even though your traffic is stable? I was hoping that the new system would prove to be reliable if only because a traffic benchmark would be a handy bit of info to have especially for advertising purposes or when purchasing existing domains. At the moment I have to think Alexa is no better or more accurate than before. Let me know what you think.

Cheers,

Griz

Griz,

This tool is officially amazing. I used to use it all the time for estimating the CPC I would get in different niches, and was jumping for joy when they modified it a few weeks ago, amazing stuff.

I now use it in conjunction with Keyword Elite and other tools to have a really killer keyword research system.

And re:Alexa, I seriously don't even pay attention to the Alexa rankings. They would only affect my income if I sold private ads, so all I pay attention to is my statcounter...

And on another note I sent you an email re: the private forum...

I decided to have a look at the stats I have for a fairly well established site and am currently no. 2 on google.us for my main term.

When I look at my stats for last month I had 509 searches for that term, according to Awstats.

However Google Adwords has it listed as 18,100 searches for last month. I also specified the US results because that is the data center I seem to be ranking in. For all the data centers the number is 22,200.

When I look at Keyword Elite I get 927 searches per month.

It would appear in my case that Keyword Elite is the more accurate of the two.

Hello Grizz,
I just heard about this this morning morning and just checked it out. I did a search for how to make money and unchecked synonyms and the match type is in "broad" as you have it. However, I don't see 22,200 I see something like 450,000 "approx search volume for June" That is for "how to make money" and the search was a general how to make money G's AdWords tool. Although I use KE. I would like to know how you used this to get your results, maybe another post on your beginners blogging?

Great change, especially for newbies. It makes life so much easier when you can see numbers.

And of course you're right. Google's figures are much closer than anyone else's.

i felt the new Google search numbers were inflated. Wouldn't they benefit if the number appeared larger than actuality - this would entice more PPC revenue. You think?

Your data analysis was VERY useful and gives me more confidence in their data but I'm still cautious.

Yea Griz, ain't it great? I have been using the Google keywords tool like crazy now, and find more niches than I can work. It has opened more cans of worms than I can handle.

Just a side note... I am still alive over here whenever you are ready get rolling with the evil stuff.

It's good to know that you found the new Google tool accurate for your keywords. I've just started a new site based on keywords researched with this tool and I strongly hope it's accurate, as I'm going to invest a lot of time in that.

Regarding Alexa, I've also noticed it doesn't match my stats. It's exactly like you said: lots of ups and downs, while statcounter shows a steady traffic.

Alexa is F-ed up. I currently have a blog in the top 85,000. Before the update it was at 160,000 or so. After, it went to 120,000 and beat out one of my other blogs that actually got more traffic at the time. My traffic hasn't increased much and yet in the last couple of months, I have jumped about 40,000 numbers. If I am gaming the system, I am doing it on accident. So, who knows. Accurate, no. Where the numbers come from. I have no freaking idea.

griz, i was hoping you had the scoop on whats going on with alexa. yeah, my blog goes from 5 digits to 6 digits every other day. I guess they are still tweaking everything. my traffic stays consistent but i noticed a pattern with links. maybe they are using a weighted system with links boosting the rank. who knows? if you figure out any patterns, let me know. btw, when did u set up mmogrizl dot com? about time you got your own domain for a mmo blog. imagine if that blog was getting thousands of dailys. ;)

Now that G keyword tool has actual numbers, I see that other free keyword tools such as keyword discovery and seo book have numbers that are WAY off.

Whom should I trust more? No question about it, even if G numbers are inflated, I'd still base my findings around G.

As for Alexa, why even waste time looking at the numbers.

I've been quietly using the Adwords research tool for a while now and I've said the same in the forum - Google's tool takes it figures from 16% of the total searches and averages, which goes some way to explain the anomolies.

However, tools like keyword elite and wordtracker only use 2% of the total searches and average.

So in whom would you rather place you trust?

As for Alexa, remember they take their readings only from surfers who have their toolbar installed on their browser. You can get a thousand uniques from non IM people who wouldn't know what Alexa was. Or you can go the other way and if your blog appeals to a lot of IM'ers you could see a good ranking. One day will never be the same as the next especially if the majority of your traffic is organic.

But in the end, who cares? If you're not selling links, doing paid reviews, or trying to attract big advertisers, your Alexa rank doesn't mean much!

Great addition to G keywords, prior to that I used the traffic estimator which gave estimated clicks on ppc campaigns... but this looks a lot better ;-)

Alexa is fantastic, check this out!!

I've noticed that there is a lot of variation between what the Google keyword tool shows and other tools show on some niches while others are very close. The larger the sample size though, the more accurate the results will be, as long as the source data is clean.

Coño, I put a massive typo in that last comment...

...it should have read "Google's tool takes it figures from 60% of the total searches and averages," not 16%.

I must have been half asleep when I wrote it (coffee hadn't kicked in).

Alexa is pure crap and has been for quite some time.

I checked my favorite keywords for my blog with the Google tool and now I understand why I jumped from 400 to 500 unique visitors per day after re-targeting, almost overnight. I expect that number to keep rising.

The amazing thing I recently found out is that I'm now getting 30 percent of my traffic from Yahoo because of how I use the HeadSpace plugin for my WordPress blog.

So... the Google numbers are good, but I wish Yahoo had something similar because it would make it even more precise in my case.

I'm pretty sure I read correctly, but I just want to be sure. Adwords numbers are MONTHLY, right?

According to G analytics, i received 127 clicks for obama 58 states june 22-july 22. I rank one two, double index for the term. Adwords shows "insufficient data" for june on the term and average of 110. What gives?

I also have some data where wordtracker says a number like 260 and adwords says like 150. Isn't wordtracker supposed to be daily searches? How can it be off by 2000%? or whatever. I don't feel like figuring out the math right now, but that's a gigantic discrepancy.

RT Cunningham said...

You have to remember that AdWords is only Google. Wordtracker and other services include the other search engines (Yahoo, MSN, etc.).

The AdWords tool is a just a measuring stick and that's why it says "estimated".

I'm still not a fan of their tool. Its about time they got rid of some of the vague 'bars' but they still have some of the important numbers hidden.

I'll still opt for other free applications instead. Thanks but no thanks to google.

Love your blog btw.

I'm kind of really uneasy with the alex ranking system. I heard they have changed their ways now, maybe so, but before I had one site about to break the top 100,000 by them, and to be truthful, I was only getting about 12 visitors a day if that, don't know where they got that figure of a rank...

Keyword tool is pretty good, use it myself.....

This is a great addition to the Google tool, but I am pretty sure that the numbers on Google are a inflated, some of the KW I searched came out with ridiculous search counts, probably there are some bot and spammer hits in the tool.

Hi Grizzly!

I'm really glad that G have put the actual search figures in. they are certainly a lot more meaningful than the old green bar which gave only 'indications' of scale'.

Alexa seems to be pretty erratic and really not to be trusted for anything important.

Great post Griz. I've been using this tool for a while and when I noticed the search count around a week ago I thought I'd just been unaware of it the whole time... (for people completely new to this tool make sure you switch on "all columns" in the "Choose columns to display" drop down - there are some hidden features...)

@Terry - good to know this tool's data is based on 60% of the total.

I was a bit confused as one of the niches I'm working gets nowhere near the traffic that tools.seobook.com predicted it would (still enough to turn a small profit though) yet google's tool estimates less than I get for total searches and I'm not even ranked #1... Was trying to get my head around this discrepancy.

Where did you get the 60% figure? Do you think it could be based on even less of the total search data than this?

I still agree with Griz that the google data seems the most accurate out of the other traffic estimation tools - especially when I compare to the traffic I receive vs. my current rankings.

I couldn't be happier that they combined this information into one searchable reference. I have noticed that the estimated average CPC numbers change if you re-query the system, so I'm assuming that it's actually calculating them on the fly?

The keyword tool is great. Not just for ppc, but also for organic seo. Find long-tail keywords with low competition with it, then target that keyword in your next blog post. Great plug.

Hi Griz-

I've been trying to figure out what's happening with the Alexa rankings myself. Last month one of my sites had an Alexa rank of somewhere around 440,000 if I remember correctly. Suddenly the site (which is not a blog) plummeted to somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,600,000. And while I understand they're doing some different things, it's hard to understand such a radical change. Mind you, I was getting increased traffic to my site during this period. Currently the site is at 1,144,626. Go figure.

Well, it looks like as of now, August 4. 08, that Google is either doing maintenance, because the monthly search volume feature comes up with..

"Insufficient Data"..

Hopefully, it is just temporary. I just hope that they are not having second thoughts, and getting protective of their data again..

Google Trends also has a feature that lets you spy on websites. You have to scroll down to the bottom and click the link at...

New! Explore the audiences of specific websites with Trends for Websites

Google.com/trends
http://www.google.com/trends

I know that some in the SEO community are not happy about this because their keywords and stats are out there in cyberspace for all to see.

But, like you said, it is a good way for people new to the game to get started on keyword research, and it does save money on programs like Keyword Elite..

With over 60% of the search market, share, why would you want to use any service like Wordtracker, which I think gets their data from Metacrawler - basically only involving only 1% of the total searchs?

I maybe speaking without education about that number, but it is painfully obvious that Google is the big fish. Where else would you want to do your research..

Unless Cuil.com starts making a dent in the market. One can only hope for Google for another strong competitor in the SE market..

Great stuff as usual Griz..
