Asia'h Epperson

Make Money with American Idol - Part Two

Last week I started rolling out my Celebrity blogs for another season of American Idol. I also created several new blogs optimized for the final 24 contestants to make it through the Hollywood auditions. I showed you two of these blogs - Asia'h Epperson and Amy Davis so that you could see exactly how I set them up and now I want to show you what has happened since then.

I am trying to teach my readers how to properly optimize their blogs for the search engines in order to obtain traffic and then how to monetize the site once the traffic begins showing up. These two new blogs are meant to be short term money makers but could be long term if I chose to make them that way. I haven't as I simply want to cash in on the burst traffic that American Idol produces each season. The only real difference between short term and long term is that I would hold off monetizing a long term blog until it was firmly established on Google and the content on these short term sites can best be described as crap. A long term blog requires good original content with the hopes of becoming an authority blog in the niche selected.

It has been a week since I created the Asia'h Epperson and Amy Davis blogs.

The screenshots below tell the tale of what has happened as far as traffic to them is concerned. (Click on all images to enlarge them)

This screenshot (above) lists a number of my blogs in my statcounter account. The highlighted blogs show that Asia'h has received 786 page views since last week and Amy Davis has received 231 page views. I left in a few of last years Antonella Barba blogs so you could see that even they are starting to get a dribble of traffic again since American Idol is back on air. I have blacked out several sites that I am working again this year but you can see the kind of traffic that can be had from this. Antonella Ipod Photos? What's that about? I was using Antonella to draw traffic for iPod sales as well as dozens of other products and of course Adsense.

I have mentioned in the past that I create dozens of blogs for this niche and combined they can make a lot of money in a short period of time.

Now let's take a closer look at the kind of traffic Asia'h and Amy have been getting since last week.

The stats above show Asia'h Epperson's traffic. The table below shows what search queries were used on the search engines to find the blog. I should point out that Yahoo indexed me immediately and most of the traffic you see came from Yahoo. Google did not index me until yesterday - at 8:45 in the morning to be precise. The statcounter page below tells me this and it also shows me what search terms (keywords) are being used to find the blog. This is important as it tells me what terms I should be optimizing my future posts for in order to rank high in the serp's. Past experience has told me that the bulk of my visitors are going to be teenage boys - and what are teenage boys interested in... Photos! If I showed you all the keyword stats you would see that most of the keyword searches have contained the Idol's name along with "Pics", "Photos", "Gallery", "Myspace", "Joplin MO", "Father Killed", American Idol" and so on. I have of course sprinkled these terms in my posts which has led me to rank well for them.

Note: I have mentioned writing long rambling posts full of related keywords and this is the reason why. If you only concentrate on one or two keywords in each post you will only get traffic for those terms. The more keywords you sprinkle your posts with the more stuff you have to get indexed with.

Keyword Traffic for Asia'h Epperson

Referral Traffic for Asia'h Epperson

Asia'H Epperson Ranks 6th on Yahoo

Asia Epperson Ranks 5th in Google. (Notice the misspelled Asia - there will be lot's of searches with her name spelled incorrectly so it doesn't hurt to rank for it as well.)

Now the Amy Davis blog stats shown below tell a different story. It did not get indexed by Google until Feb 16 at 9:57 am. Yahoo has not sent any traffic so it either hasn't indexed it or it's so far back that nobody has found it yet. I don't care about Yahoo so I won't pursue ranking on it. (Requires Meta Tags and a few other tweaks but doing so can have an adverse effect on Google rankings - Google will send far more traffic so I will stick with them.)

Amy Davis' Traffic Stats.

The traffic shown in the chart above is almost all referral traffic from other sites. Google only began sending search traffic two days ago. The stats below outline the keyword traffic from Google and the Referral traffic.

Google Traffic for Amy Davis Below - notice the keywords used to find the blog.

Referral Traffic for Amy Davis Below - notice that Technorati has been sending traffic. I have received as much traffic from Technorati in past years as Google. (Note: Blogger Labels are Technorati Tags - Wordpress Tags also serve as Technorati Tags.)

A few pointers before I discuss monetization.

Below is a screenshot of the Technorati account I set up for Asia'h. You will notice that I currently have 8 backlinks pointing at the new blog. This is how to get indexed. Do not submit your blogs to Google - you will sit in limbo for ages. The best way to get indexed quickly is to point some links to your new site from an established site that Google crawls regularly. Note: Technorati only lists links from blogs - not websites. I have more links that aren't shown here. One comes from a Radio station website in Asia'h's hometown of Joplin MO. They incorrectly linked to my blog thinking it is Asia'h's own blog - hehe - how did they get that idea? (See screenshot below Technorati listing)

Of these 8 links on Technorati I am responsible for 7 of them and my new friend Christopher Hedges was kind enough to provide the last one. As a reward for a job well done I will give him a link back using another American Idol finalist that he is targeting - Joanne Borgella.

If you are interested all the Technorati links are from PR3 and PR4 sites and they all use the keyword "Asia'h Epperson" (the links are in bold on Technorati) in the anchor text of the link. This is imortant as that is the term I want to rank well in the serp's. Should I drop in rankings I will muster up some more links like these and also target some of the other keywords that have shown up in the searches. Most notably "Asia'h Epperson Photo Gallery", "Asia'h Epperson Photos", "Asia Epperson Pics" etc. As I said - past experience has told me that these will be the terms most of the teenage boys will be looking for.

The Radio Station Link Below.

Monetization for American Idol

When I created the blogs I did not ad any form of monetization to them. Wait until you are indexed before doing this. Once the traffic started showing up I added Adsense to the Asia'h blog. Needless to say - the Adsense bot gave me nothing but crap as the blog was optimized for Asia'h Epperson only and there are no ads tailored to such a term. No problem. I then went back and edited the original blog and posts. I added a number of keywords for the benefit of the Adsense bot in order for it to give me ads that I know will produce clicks. I added terms like "American Idol", Models", "photos", "Celebrity Gossip" and so on. These terms do have existing ads and by using the keywords in the Blog description and in the posts I was able to get Google to send me the right kind of ads. This can be done with any site at any time. If your Adsense ads suck on your pages just keep re-editing using various terms until you get the ads that produce. (Remember that all of you who get crappy paying ads.)

Note: I am still getting some crappy ads mixed in with the good ads and this is simply because I have yet to add enough content to the site to satisfy the Adsense bot - it is still not exactly positive as to what the site is about. I have not yet monetized the Amy Davis site but will later today.

I always start out with Adsense but will add other monetization as things progress - I need to get a feel for who the searchers are and what they are looking for first.

You will notice in the traffic stats that there were far more searches done on the two days following the airing of last weeks American Idol. You may not think that the little traffic I received means much but I am very optimistic. Asia'h has only received about 5 minutes of air time so far on the show - basically her interview regarding her dad's death and her short audition song. We have not seen her sing anything else. Amy Davis has had no air time at all yet save for a two second clip naming her as a top 24 finalist. Given this lack of exposure I am quite impressed with the number of searches I have seen so far. I assure you that after the shows air this week I will see a surge in visitors. I will of course let you know how that turns out.

Ok - that's enough for today. If you have questions fire away and remember there are 24 contestants at the moment that can be targeted as well as the show "American Idol" itself.

ps.For those waiting for my post on Adsense tips I will be doing it soon but note that I just gave you a few above.

Cheers,

Griz

Tuesday Update

American Idol will air later tonight so I thought I would show you a before and after snapshot of what happens with the Asia'h site. Since posting yesterday I have seen a steady increase in visitors via Google as seen in the chart below...

I have also got my first few Adsense clicks - between $0.35 and $0.70 per click which is decent for this market. Terrible click thru rate though which is why this only pays off with really high traffic bursts. We will see in the morning...

Great info Griz

You should have another Technorati link now, as long as it gets picked up. My blue and gold macaw loves to sing along with Idol so he had to blog about your site.

Griz,
Thank you for your advice the examples are especially helpful. I started following your blog about a month ago and have been trying your suggestions. So far I'd say your spot on with your information and I look forward to making your plan work for my sites.
Thanks Again,

Grizz, Thanks for the update! I guess I will have to work harder on this. No my name is not Christopher. :-)

Thanks also for the adsense tips.

Hey Griz,

Thanks for the tips and the mention! I'm going to take a look around at some of your archives, especially the payday loans experiment.

Frank,

I got the link Frank - be sure and thank the big bird for me! :-)

Gotafish,

You are most welcome and thanks for saying hi. If you ever need a hand, don't be shy...

Denise,

Ha, you're right - Chris left a comment just after you did. Hope things are working out for you Denise.

Neena,

Thanks for that and for dropping in - I have seen your output on Blogging Zoom and you seem to be doing just fine. Keep it up Neena.

Chris,

Thank you for the link and I'd love to hear how things turn out for you. BTW - if you start outranking me for "make money online" I won't talk to you anymore! LOL. Good job Chris.

Nice informative post as always, Griz. I'm lagging behind thanks to not having blogs set up for this - I put my first one up last week and haven't had time to create any more - yet - maybe tomorrow!

I also put one up for the Spanish version and will work that a bit more too as I have some time - it kicks off early April.

Question for you on monetisation:

Do you have much luck with affiliate stuff - I'm thinking big music sellers like Amazon and Yahoo and maybe Allposters?

I have some other blogs in that niche that get some traffic and so far the fish ain't bitin'!

Terry

Grizzly Brears said...

Hey Terry,

I know you've been busy as I have been checking all those new "make money" MFA sites.

Last year the only affiliate sales that worked were for acne treatments, dating sites, pin up calenders and surprisingly links for various "make money online" products.

I am contemplating trying out the UVME affiliate package this year as gaming would seem to fit in well with teens.

Needless to say - lots of experimenting is the key.

One nice thing about burst traffic is you have your answers fast - if an add doesn't produce on 5000 hits on day one there is no point in keeping it around for day two.

Good luck Terry.

Griz, I am really interested in trying out some of these celebrity type blogs. Where do you get photos for these blogs. That is my only worry. I'm scared of getting sued for using someone else's photos. Is there a way around this?

Great in depth post Grizz. I also noticed spikes in traffic after each episode was aired. But the search traffic after that for a few particular contestants have been consistently high as well. And they aren't always the best contestants LOL

Hey Grizz,

Soooo.... how long should it take to get indexed? I know we've talked about this before and I've even tried the speed indexing thing with Can Bears Pick There Nose and Do Birds Flush the Toilet. Both of those took almost a week to index.

I have three new keyword targeted blogs that I linked to from pre-existing, indexed blogs, even one with PR and after three days still nothing. What am I doing wrong?

I'm anxious to get this figured out because I can see this working on another blog I have. I spent a grand total of about 2 hours working on it and it gets hits and clicks Every Day.

Can you point me in the right direction?

TIA,

Thom

Nice post. And congrats on the 5th position, you'll probably go higher.

I already had success with those kind of Bloger blogs ( Miley Cyrus Underwear ) but now I'm going for a long term niche. Already making posts and preparing to hit the article directories.

I have two questions though:
1. I'm new to Bloger, so I don't know what needs to be optimized considering titles, H1 and those details to rank higher. Do you have any post on that or a site that explains it to a noob?
2. I haven't been able to find the code for removing the Bloger header. Seems that somebody flagged me because Bloger deleted all my 4 blogs on one account. Can you help there?

Thanks is advance,
James

As usual this is good stuff. This page is so packed with useful information. I will send some links in the direction of the American Idols blogs to say thanks.

Grizzly Brears said...

Diane,

The legal answer is don't use copywrited material.

The real world answer is...

The safest way to do this is to credit the source. Having said that you will find that everyone will be using the same photos on hundreds of sites and credit is never given - usually the photos come from Fox or are leaked anonymously onto the net. Fox has never gone after anyone for using it's photos - it's free publicity for the show. The leaked photos are usually from friends or relatives who want to stay hidden and become part of the common domain. Credit all photos when you can or even better get permission but you will find with American Idol that most of the photos are non - credited and are reproduced everywhere. This doesn't mean it's ok to use them just that you are unlikely to be singled out and sued. Always keep your identity quiet and you shouldn't have any trouble.

YC,

Last year Sanjiya Malakar was just about as popular as Antonella Barba and he was terrible but the 12 year old girls just loved him. I was never able to monetize his traffic though - I know what teenage boys are after but haven't a clue about teenage girls! lol.

Grizzly Brears said...

Thom,

The quick index trick is not working at the moment - I saw a comment on Blogger Unleashed that jokingly said maybe Google saw Vic or my posts on the subject and turned the switch off. I have had Matt Cutts (Google) drop in a few times and the folks from Blogger's own forum so it is possible that someone did get wind of this and Google changed the algorithm. On the other hand Google is busy playing with the index at the moment as all sorts of strange things are happening in the serp's . Once they are done wemay find that things go back to normal as they have in the past. We will have to wait and see.

For now I find I am getting indexed using backlinks from authority sites in about 3-5 days which still isn't bad. You are doing things right - just be patient for now. If you aren't indexed in a week try and get a few more links and see what happens.

Don@AffiliateWatcher said...

Nice post Griz,

I've also seen Yahoo indexing my AI Blogger blogs quicker than Google. I'm not sure what's up with that as some of my other Blogger blogs in different niches are never indexed by Yahoo. Strange, but I'm not complaining!

It's always been my view that Yahoo is not blogger friendly, but these AI blogs are proving otherwise. Any ideas why?

James,

My series of posts on my sidebar called "Make Money Using Blogs" explains the basics of setting up and optimizing Blogger Blogs. Some of the posts are outdated and need editing regarding some things but the basic blog set up hasn't changed - just follow along and when in doubt see how I do things with this site - it is perfectly SEO'd for Google.

Go here to remove the Nav Bar banner - Remove Blogger Nav Bar

Grizzly Brears said...

Keith,

Thanks for the comment and remember you can keep re-editing posts until you get what you are looking for with Adsense. Allow a day or so for Google to catch up between edits though - the bot isn't always fast at making changes.

Grizzly Brears said...

Frank HM,

Thanks for the comment and the links - much appreciated and all the best.

Grizzly Brears said...

Don,

I have found Yahoo jumps on them quickly at first but they then drop them down the serp's once they get more sites providing the same info that are optimized for Yahoo - they don't normally like Blogger as it doesn't use Meta Tags and a few other things. (Being owned by Google probably has just a little to do with this)

I suspect that blogspot blogs are just quicker out of the gate and get indexed before anything else is available. Just a guess as I long ago quit wondering about Yahoo - they are terrible compared to Google as a search engine and I don't waste a minute chasing their traffic. I'll take it if given but that's all.

yc said...

Grizz, to be honest, a lot of it (finding what different target audience likes) is a crapshoot. I keep track of what works and what doesn't though, so that it can be replicated down the road. I guess part of the fun is trying to find out what monetization method suddenly rings the cash registers. When it happens it's really nice. If not, just dump it lol

Just want to make a comment to everyone about quick indexing etc. Tricks are great to know and use, but don't become over reliant on one or two. Grizz, Vic and the rest also advise on the traditional methods so don't forget the fundamentals. Sometimes we just have to work the hard way.

Grizzly Brears said...

Good advice YC, thanks for pointing that out.

Just a note to those of you waiting for a reply to your emails - and there are a lot of you - sorry but I am a bit swamped and don't really have the time to even let you know that I got the emails never mind answering them. I hate this immensely but can't do a thing about it as there are just too many requests. I try and deal with some everyday but as I have said before - leave your questions in the comments and I will probably get to them quicker or some of my readers may be able to help out.

Again I am truly sorry and if you saw my inbox you would understand. (there were 106 new emails waiting for me just this morning - aaaaaargh!)

Hey Griz,

Googles adword tool may be of help to your readers with regards to adsense https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal.

You will see what adwords advertisers are approx paying per click.

Use american idol as the phrase and you will get lots of keyword ideas and see whats getting traffic.

Note : If you are not based in america change the results tailored section to United States.

Also once the first results come back click on the choose columns to be displayed and scroll down and select Show All, then choose US Dollars for calculate estimates and enter 10. hit re-calculate.

This will show estimated ad position and cost per click.

Hint: go for high searched and high priced phrases.

Hope this helps

Again, thanks for all of your help.

That's odd Grizz how can your feedburner drop by nearly 130 readers? I know it's embarrassing watching somone elses feedburner grow.

Grizzly Brears said...

Newbie,

It's just a common glitch - one of the RSS feeds (usually Google's) is not reporting today - everybody is lower but it will bounce back in a day or two. This happens frequently so don't panic if it has happened to you - I noticed Vic lost a couple hundred and Court is down 700.

As a small token of thanks, I would like to recommend a neat tool for all your Firefox users (sorry IE loyalists): http://tools.seobook.com has a collection of free SEO tools that let you see instantly things like if a link is 'no follow', how old a website in the google serps is, the PR of any site in the google serps, how many links they have, etc. Hope this can help some.

Thanks again,

Hi Griz,

Great blog and great posts, your blog it's the first i see that really share superb information and almost step by step guides. But i've one doubt that i would like you to answer if possible, here it is:

You've of course many blogger accounts for different blogs and niches. But and what about adsense? Do you use the same account in all the different blogger accounts? And if yes, is that ok for adsense?

Grizzly Brears said...

Dinheiro,

I get this asked a lot. For the record Google does not allow more than one Adsense account per person. However if a person had several businesses each with it's own bank account, mailing address, phone number, ISP and separate computer then they would have no problem registering each business with Adsense. The advantage of this would be to keep each one of their main niches and supporting sites separate from their other main niches - in case Google was to ban one account they wouldn't lose all their income.

Obviously this isn't necessary to someone starting out but should they start making serious money then protecting their assets is a very good idea. I'll say no more.

Grizzly Brears said...

Fred,

You add the Adsense code to a page element (add html/java script) and then move the element to where you want the ad located. This is all done in the "Layout" tab.

Grizzly Brears said...

Gotafish,

Keep things reasonable and natural - 4 or 5 links from 4 or 5 of your other blogs is not a big deal - 100 links from 100 blogs is trouble.

Griz you said as a reply, "Keep things reasonable and natural - 4 or 5 links from 4 or 5 of your other blogs is not a big deal - 100 links from 100 blogs is trouble".

- does it mean, 4-5 links from one blog going to main site is ok and if I have 100 blogs ( under 20 different a/c), a total of 400-500 links going to main site is fine.

If answer to this get you into any trouble, just send it to my email you don't need to post in blog.

oh another one,
If some one has say 100 blogs in one Adsense a/c. One site gets into trouble, does it mean all 100 sites adsense is gone?

- can they apply for new account or - request to reopen the old a/c

thanks.

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American and Canadian users at this time. Oh and it is free.
