American Idol - Season Seven

Make Money Online with American Idol

It's money season again. American Idol may or may not be your cup of tea but it is a huge traffic producer and for each of the past three years I have used the show to make heaping gobs of cash online. My regular readers are familiar with my Antonella Barba, Air Force One Sneakers, Bape Shoes and Kelly Pickler campaigns from last year and I have been busy dusting off my stable of Celebrity and Entertainment blogs in preparation for another season of this popular show.

This is strictly short term blogging and most of what I have taught you about creating long term sustainable Adsense blogs doesn't apply to this type of market. The SEO is still the same but you won't be chasing down PR or keyword authority for this market. The trick to this is Google's bias towards "fresh" content and Technorati's Tag system.

Now having said that there are a few things that are different this year. When I first started targeting American Idol there was little in the way of competition. That has changed drastically since last year and there are now hundreds of sites zoning in on this niche - thousands really but as usual not all of them know what they are doing.

The biggest change is an unknown - Technorati. In the past I used Technorati to drive traffic to my American Idol blogs by tagging them with the most popular terms people were searching for on Technorati. Unlike Google, Technorati posts the most recent blogs first in their search index and if you had enough blogs you could keep yourself constantly on the top searched Tag index. The problem this year is that Technorati has made so many bloody changes to it's site that I am not sure this will be as effective as it once was. They have tried to become all things to all people and veered away from what was once a simple blog directory. One of the biggest changes has been to eliminate the prominence of their "Top Tags" feature and this may have negative consequences as far as driving traffic this year. I shall find out...

Regardless I have been updating a my aged blogs and created several new ones targeting some of the contestants likely to make a few waves based on their popularity in the pre - Hollywood auditions. This is speculation of course but as I have mentioned before it never hurts to lock in the most desirable URL's on blogspot in case the contestant takes off.

Two good candidates are Asia'h Epperson who has already received a fair amount of attention because a) she is young and pretty b) she can sing? but mostly c) her father was killed in a car accident just before her audition and the Video of her performance and the effect it had on the judges, has been getting a lot of play on the net. The other notable could be Amy Davis who aside from singing professionally in a band is also a model and there is no shortage of scantily clad photos of her already online - ala Antonella Barba.

Needless to say the best that could happen is a scandal of some sort and American Idol seems to have a track record for these - if you have been thinking of trying out some of my short term methods for making money online this is the time of year to do it.

Note: I will be returning to regular posting shortly - my apologies as I have been catching up on a number of other projects that have been neglected and were beginning to suffer poorer earnings.

Thanks for the heads up! How do you monetize these blogs?

Do you have one blog for American Idol and then extension blogs with each performers names?

Also do we have to watch American Idol to blog about it? :-(

Sorry for all the questions. Just trying to get a handle on it.

A confession... I was hoping to just sneak this post through as it is more for my purposes than anyone else's. This isn't to say that others can't jump on the bandwagon - you certainly can - but things look to be a lot tougher in this niche this time around. The amount of money to be had in the short time frame has made this a popular target for black hatters and they are a challenge.

If you check out Let's Make Money Right Now you will get an idea of how I monetize these sites.

It should be mentioned that if one were to have a second Adsense account then one could avoid smart pricing on their long term blogs which can happen with these types of sites - sites that skirt the fine splog line.

The American Idol TV audience is huge - into the 10's of millions and a good percentage of these viewers are teenagers and they will religiously check the web for any new info on their favorite idols. I have had days of over 100,000 visitors to my blogs - not something you see often and one of the reasons I love Blogger - it can handle the traffic.

I can't tell you exactly what I do but I have built up a large stable of blogs that are aged and are relevant to American idol. I am also adding new ones that target individual contestants. This works best with lots of blogs and a continuous stream of content about the show or singers.

Funny enough - the bulk of the competition in this niche don't watch the show - they just scrape content from those who post original entries. If you use my link back trick in your posts you can use all the scrapers for backlinks. Hint - write original posts and optimize them for certain keywords that will trigger better Adsense ads.

If my post was a little vague, my apologies but as I said this was more for my benefit. This is one of those cases where I find having readers is a bit tricky - you can only imagine what I would be doing on here if I didn't have anybody reading what I write. It would be SEO'd up the ying yang for all sorts of stuff that wouldn't make sense to human. Lol

Thanks for stopping in and good luck with it - hard yes but a good way to dip your feet into the grayish world of mass blogging.

Thanks for such a complete response! I have so much to learn. Thanks also for the links guiding me to the right posts to read. I know you are busy, but I am trying my best to make money online. I do not know how to get a second Adsense account. I have had one for 2 1/2 years now and only made $50 so far.

I love to swim so I will probably take the plunge. :-)

Thanks for your time and welcome back!

Denise, ignore the second adsense remark - it was mentioned for the benefit of those that have one. I won't lead the rest of you down that path - anyone attempting this had better know what they are doing and does so at their own risk.

For those who aren't making much with adsense it won't matter if you are smart priced while attempting this - this is really about getting a taste of what real traffic is and then responding to it in the most lucrative manner be it adsense or affiliate sales or whatever other form of monetization you want to try. The thing is that with 100,000 visitors even poorly monetized sites can make a buck just on the numbers alone. I'll tell you now though - making $100 off of that kind of traffic won't thrill you when you realize that you should be making a hell of a lot more. Lot's of experimenting.

Enjoy your swim Denise! Lol

Hi Grizzly Brears, I had been reading blog for sometime already, really thanks for the useful and unselfish information you have!

Between I do have a couple of questions to ask, hope you are free to answer beside your busy schedule.

How do you do up your blog theme? Mostly the same but I like the layout and colour, do attracts people to look at the blogs. Do you mind if you can teach or sent me a copy of your blog theme?

I had seen your blogspot sites about the idols, you have some pictures about them but the question is where do you get those pictures and don't you worry about copyright if you copy and paste them?

Sorry for the long post, looking forward towards your reply, thanks so much here!

Hey Griz, glad to see you back I was wondering where you'd got to!

Sounds like something I should be doing... dusting off a few old blogs and having a go at this one. I don't have to worry about smart pricing as I don't have adsense LMAO but it might be interesting to see if Bidvertiser can perform with some decent traffic.

Here's a question for you about Technorati...

I've got several different logins for blogger and wondered if I should set up multiple accounts with Technorati so as not to have all the blogs registered at the same place?

Houston,

My blog theme - if you can call it that - is simply the Minima template. While I change the skin widths and play around with the font size and colors I don't alter the basic set up. I wrote a post about this which basically explains that the Minima theme is perfectly optimized for SEO right out of the box. This is useful as I create so many blogs that I wouldn't have time to play around with the layouts.

Black on white with Blue highlights has proven to be the best choice for Adsense conversions and as such I tend to stick with it ad nauseum...

While using copyright material shouldn't be done - if one was to do such a thing it would be wise not to leave a trail back to your door... capiche? (Giving photo credits when available is not a bad idea either.)

I should mention that Fox is not likely to come after you for advertising their product nor are those who leak photos on the net without credit. Still I'm not recommending this, just pointing out the reality of things...

Grizzly Brears said...

Hi Terry,

Yes, I'm back and I must admit I thought you would be all over this by now. I intend on trying bidvertiser on a few of the blogs this time around to get an idea of how they compare with adsense.

When the traffic starts so does my experimenting with monetization.

Not that you need to watch the show as it gets lots of coverage online (Videos and Limewire) but is American Idol available on your side of the pond? I ask as the best traffic time is right after each episode airs here in N. America.

Technorati, like Blogger, can be a bit of a pain in the ass if you have too many blogs under one account. I tend to stick to 4-5 blogs per account with each service. I use a different email for each acct and "important" don't use the same password for all your accounts. An easy trail to follow if someone decides to look.

Is there a "Spanish Idol"? We have Canadian Idol which I have been able to milk as well but not nearly to the extent of AI - a numbers thing - but worth pursuing if you have a version of the show in your home country.

Thanks for checking in Terry.

Griz

Terry said...

Food for thought, thanks Griz.

Spanish Idol?

No, but we have something along the same lines called "Operacion Triunfo" which if anyone outside Spain actually saw it would blow them away. The quality of the vocalists is stunning and the ones that get thrown out are better than the winners of other similar shows in different countries.

That aside, targeting a Spanish online audience is not going to produce too much as the PPC ads from Bidvertiser are just not strong enough and there's no affiliate stuff that will lure them in except maybe AllPosters.

Then there is finding the time for all this! I'm swamped at the mo, which is bad timing but hey ho, its money so what can you do!

I think I've boobed with technorati - far too many blogs (27) in one account! Damn I wasn't thinking. Mind you most of them are self hosted all at the same host, so they can all be linked anyway.

I've a brace of new blogger blogs that I hadn't gotten around to doing much with just yet, so I know where they'll be going. I'm guessing its more to do with, shall we say blogs of less than honourable intent, that need lifting and dividing to help them to proliferate and not be thought of as weeds!

Grizzly Brears said...

Terry you guess correctly - if you have nothing but squeaky clean sites then one account will do the trick although blogger tends to make things disappear if you get too carried away. A Pre-emptive strike it would seem. lol

Does American Idol air in Spain? I seem to remember seeing Homer Simpson and crew when I was there... only understood the "Doh" parts though!

Tay - Super Blogging said...

This is something I should've gotten into years ago. I'm guilty of watching American Idol but only got into the whole blogging and making money online scene about a year ago. I need to get creative!

Anyway, I have a question that might seem a little stupid, but what's the problem with having a lot of blogs on just one Blogger and Technorati account? I read the comments and saw this mentioned. I'm probably just missing something really obvious. ;)

Thanks Grizz!

Grizzly Brears said...

Hi Tay,

That's not a stupid question at all - just stupid of me not to explain this better. If you have too many blogs on one account it flags the spam patrols and if your blogs are in any way questionable you will have them deleted on Blogger or de-listed on Technorati.

By keeping to a minimum of 4-5 blogs per account the flags don't go up and nobody bothers checking unless of course some concerned citizen reports you.

If your blogs are legit you can ask Technorati to re-list you. The problem with Blogger is that they delete your blog and can't un-delete it if they have made an error so best not to give them an excuse. I have had perfectly legit sites eliminated on Blogger simply because I had too many on one account - stick to 4 or 5 to be safe. (always back up your content as you can just start another blog should something happen.)

Good luck Tay.

I did not know this about the blogger blogs either! I have all my blogs on one account. Guess I need to open more email accounts. Do they check IP addresses? When I run SEO Elite I notice duplicate IP addresses are tracked. I have not gotten into proxy IPs so I hope this is not an issue.

Hey Grizz,

Glad to see you are human, and need to take time out to keep your other endeavors running smoothly - it makes me feel just a little bit less inferior. LOL

Seriously though, thanks for the heads up on Blogger; I am already at about a dozen blogs on one of my accounts. I set up a second acct. back when I was a noob (all of 3 or 4 months ago, ha ha )and had found ways to get my new blogspot blogs quickly sandboxed. Time to start using it again.

Couple of questions for you:
1) Blogger - in the publishing tab/section of the site allows you to change your blogspot url for the site you are editing: do you know if changing the url through this feature 'resets' the age of the blog because of changing its url?

2) I found out how to effectively 'remove' the top banner on blogger blogs (no- not by color matching lol but with code) which some do to make it look more 'professional' - or to remove the report button so spiteful people cant use it ( *cringe*). Do you know if removing this would negatively affect an account or set off any flags / alarms?

Thanks as always, Grizz.

So you got your pictures from fox news? Cause I seldom go to fox website and check it out.

Between does other blogsphere like reddit, mybloglog, webcatalog etc... helps to increase traffic by using your traffic trick? Do you think its worth a try?

Do mind writing a post on how you actually change your skin, fonts and stuffs?

So sorry for all the questions, long dull questions.

Best Regards
Houston

I am so glad to see you back posting! Either I'm losing my mind or I kept coming back to your blog and not seeing your "current" voice. Hope all is well with you.

Grizzly Brears said...

Denise,

From what I have seen of your various blogs you shouldn't worry - the ones on BZ are all good quality and would pass a manual inspection - some of mine on the other hand...

Start a new account if you plan to keep adding more though - just to be on the safe side. Duplicate IP's are not a concern - all Blogspot blogs have the same IP and this only plays a roll in backlinking. Google will ignore links if too many come from the same IP - 4 or 5 blogs are not a big deal. This was instituted to stop people from using Blogger as a link farm.

Grizzly Brears said...

Stephen,

I'm not sure if I follow your first question - do you mean moving your blog from Blogspot to your own domain? Unfortunately I have not done this and can only tell you that most people I have read doing this encounter a number of problems. You will lose your PR, backlinks and comments if I am not mistaken but perhaps others who have done this can chime in. One thing that is certain is your blog is only as old as the domain you have it on so changing this would reset it.

I have removed the Blogger Banner on sites that could get me flagged but tend to leave it on my legit sites - I use it myself to quickly flip between accounts and blogs. I have the code to remove it somewhere around here but it sounds like you have already come across it. Removing the banner has no effect on your account(s) and doesn't set off any alarms - at least not that I have ever encountered.

BTW - how's the weather in Vancouver? - It's bloody minus 40c here today!

Grizzly Brears said...

Houston,

All the show clips come from Fox as they air the program.

Anything is worth a try but the sites you mention are social networks and getting traffic from them is mostly useless as these folks don't click ads or buy products - they just read and move on. Google and Technorati are search engines and they deliver the kind of traffic that clicks and spends.

Rather than me explaining how to change the code in Blogger I suggest you check out Dummies Guide to Blogger This site has lots of hacks you can use on Blogger and saves me having to explain it - yes I'm a lazy ass!

Grizzly Brears said...

Mike,

Did you see Veejay blow his lead at Pebble Beach today? Ok, Yes folks I watch Golf on TV - guilty! I'd rather be playing but I think I mentioned it's 40 ef'n below outside...

All is well Mike and thanks for asking. Sorry for my absence but things were piling up elsewhere and needed some attention. I am mostly caught up except for the 892 unanswered emails for this blog - aaaaaargh!

Stephen said...

... people should know better than to still be emailing you Grizz. ;)

I was refering to the feature in Blogger that if you go 'settings' - 'publishing',then you are given the option of actually changing your blog's url (if its available) on the spot;I didn't even think about what happens if you transfer your blog - but now you got me thinking.

I know what you mean about the banner being useful for quick jumping; I would probably miss it, too.

So when will you be throwing on the monetization on your latest AI blogs? Nothing like that was on them when I last looked.

BTW, I'm really sorry to hear about the weather in 'middle-Canada'; I guess that is just one more excuse to stay indoors and work the keyboard,eh? The weather out here has been cool but fine, my friend. But hey, you know what they say about Vancouver: If you don't like the weather, don't worry - just wait five minutes and it will change, heh heh...

yc said...

Grizz, could you pls leave a slot or two for me this year? I started my batch of AI blogs just before they started to air it ;)

Grizzly Brears said...

Stephen...

oops, now I got you. Same difference - switching your URL starts the clock over.

I won't monetize until I start seeing meaningful traffic and then I'll test several models out and seeing what performs the best.

I gotta admit I love Vancouver - probably one of the most beautiful cities on Earth but I spent one winter there and can't remember seeing the sun. Here that's all we get - cold as hell in winter but the sun shines down and it ain't so bad. I suppose we Earthlings can live just about anywhere and like it.

Thanks Stephen

Houston,

I don't use Google Analytics - I track my stats with StatCounter on all my Blogs (it's free) and I use Feedburner (also free) as well on my legit sites.

Statcounter provides a lot of info but I'm only concerned about what keywords are used to find my site from the search engines and where my visitors come from when they use links on other sites. (social traffic) I also like to see what links are used to leave my site.

You can find Vic at his main blog "Blogger Unleashed" or at his social network "Blogging Zoom" which he co-owns with Court from "Court's Internet Marketing School". I highly recommend you check out all three sites as these are two of the best marketers you will find online and they go out of their way to help others out.

You are more than welcome Houston - Robin Hood huh... I was just getting used to being called a Musketeer... Lol.

Hi Dennis,

There is a lot of article spinning software out there and they all do much the same thing. Is one better than another - not really. I use Website Content Wizard but only because I bought it at some point not because I'm crazy about it. The truth is that setting up these programs can be just as much work as simply rewriting the dam posts - and they never read quite right. You can always tell a machine written article from an original no matter how good the owner claims the software is.

I still do it but only on my really crappy sites that make a few bucks but aren't worth investing my time on it to do things properly. I typically spin about a hundred versions of the same article and then post them 1 a week until done. Don't do this with any site that gets a lot of traffic or someone will report you.

If anyone else has a product they think is just peachy please let us know - don't spam me with affiliate links though. Grrrr!

Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American and Canadian users at this time. Oh and it is free.
