TNX.net - Part Two

TNX.NET Review

In one of my previous posts about Niche Marketing I revealed a little tactic I use to rank on page one of the serps by being negative. A serp troll if you will. I like to do this with programs that are dominated by affiliates pushing their links. This is a simple way to get traffic.

The first page of the search listings for the keyword tnx.net contains 10 affiliate sites all pushing this program. How many searchers will read all 10 sites? Not many - usually only the first couple of sites will get any traffic at all. When you search for information on a topic are you only interested in the opinion of the people who are pushing the program? No, what you really want to find is an opposite opinion so you can gauge a product from both sides. Is someone selling a product going to be as honest about it as someone who isn't selling it?

If 1 site in ten has a negative review then it will draw the majority of the traffic looking for information on the product. I posted yesterdays "negative" review and waited for the Google bot. It wasn't long after that I checked the serp's for "tnx.net" and this is what I found...

Ranked 4 on Google.com

Ranked 3 on Google.co.uk

Ranked 3 on Google.co.au

If this program becomes popular I have just created another stream of traffic for this blog much like I did with Roadmap to Riches and Project Payday. While I won't make any sales with it I will get a few Adsense clicks and it all adds up. The owner of tnx.net may be sharp enough to entice me to change my stance as well... (was that subtle enough?)

One of the things I am wrestling with is the fact that I have developed a reader base on this blog. It's obvious that this blog was set up as an adsense/affiliate sales site but in spite of it's looks people started reading it - who knew. The above example shows you how much money I could be making if I said "to hell with my readers" and started producing affiliate sales posts. I have built up my PR and keyword authority to the point that I know I would outrank just about everyone for any and all affiliate programs I chose to pimp. Make no mistake this would be lucrative as I am drawing a lot of search engine traffic - yesterday I set a new record - 1210 Google visitors and all searching for "make money online" keywords. Who are these people? They aren't savvy Internet marketers - they are total newcomers to the game. Who else would use a search term like "How to Make Money"?

Since I don't want to piss my readers off I will stick with the Adsense for now and concentrate on obtaining advertising revenue. This niche is so goofy that it boggles my mind sometimes. In Niche Markets I get tons of advertisers beating down my door the moment I rank high on Google. In this "make money online/blogging" niche it appears the advertisers don't understand the power of search traffic. They should be swarming all over me to get a piece of those 1000 noobs dropping in. Instead they want to advertise on blogs that have big RSS feed number and a low Alexa rank. This is idiotic as those numbers simply mean a blog gets lots of "Internet marketers" stopping in to read something and then they move on - they don't spend money - the noobs do! If you can't beat them then join them I guess.

To this end I have been using entrecard - not because I think it's a good program but because it brings in Alexa toolbar users and more readers (a few but not much). This has had the effect of increasing my RSS count and lowering my Alexa ranking. This is all bullshit but that's how the game is played in this niche - sad but true. If you are an advertiser I suggest you place a few ads on the top serp sites and see how this compares with your ads on the A-list sites. You might be surprised at the difference in conversions. Most of you don't even realize that the top serp sites aren't the A-listers.

I am rambling today as I want to catch up on a few questions that need answering.

I will paraphrase my readers questions to save time.

I get asked this a lot;

Of all the "make money online" sites available who do you recommend?

This isn't conclusive as there may be a few gems out there that I am not familiar with but my list of sites that are "truly helpful" is pretty short.

Vic at Blogger Unleashed

Court at Courtney Tuttle's Internet Marketing School

Garry Conn at Garry Conn's Blog Tips

Josh Spaulding at Internet Marketing with Josh Spaulding

As I said this isn't conclusive so if you know of anybody who has their sh*t together then please let me know. I don't know Garry or Josh but Garry is much like Vic, another black hatter who cuts through the crap and talks from experience. Josh is much like Court - a clean and ethical professional. Most people who blab about making money online are parrots and these are the four people they are parroting. (I am referring to the people pretending to know it all - there are plenty of good sites that share what they are learning but are honest enough to let their readers know where they get their info - the know it all's act like they have experience which they don't and it shines through to those that do.)

Moving on...

There is a really nice woman who has vaulted up the A-list this year by the name of Caroline Middlebrook and most of you are probably familiar with her. If you want to learn how to be an A-lister then she is a good role model. She is a very good writer and has a wonderful personality. Qualities that have made her fairly well known in a short period of time. She is not an experienced marketer and I don't think she will be upset with me saying that - she is willing to learn though and I think she has a great future online. To that end I want to post an email she has been sending out to a few of us marketers;

Hi Griz,

My name is Caroline Middlebrook and I'm writing to you to ask for a favour. I have recently released a free ebook which is called "How to Develop Money-Making Niche Sites with WordPress" and I am trying to promote it. If you think it would be useful to your readers I would be really grateful if you could mention it on your blog.

Here is the download link:

How to Develop Money-Making Niche Sites with WordPress

Many thanks,

Caroline Middlebrook

I get a lot of requests like this but they are usually rudely worded and the people asking make it obvious that they aren't familiar with my site - a word to the wise, if you are asking someone for a favor don't start your email with "Dear makemoneyonline.blogspot.com" - it's not hard to find out my name - sheesh!

Anyway Caroline asked quite nicely and since I like her I would love to help her out. I do have one concern with her book though - it is more of a "wordpress primer" than a guide for "money making niches". Frank at OpTempo did a good review of her ebook and I hope she understands that I don't want to mislead my readers. Her book is quite good but the title is a bit misleading.

More moving on...

The Sandbox

Let me start by saying that no one knows the ins and outs of Google's mysterious Sandbox - it doesn't exist and yet it does. I can only give you my two cents based on my experience with building blogs.

If you start a new blog on any popular subject you will likely get sandboxed - you will get indexed, stick around on the serp's for a few days and then poof! - your blog will disappear from the index. This is the sandbox. If you continue to post and show that you are not a spam site Google will release you back into the index. This can take a month or it can take 6 months.

Is there anything that you can do to avoid it?

To a degree yes but as much as what I am going to tell you helps there are times I still get sandboxed. There are forces at work here that only Darth Vader understands.

Monetizing your Blog

The best way to avoid it is to not monetize your blog. A new site with monetization all over it screams "spam". If a site is not monetized it's likely legit - why else would someone start a blog and not monetize it unless they truly just wanted to impart their knowledge to the masses. Google loves fresh unique content and has no reason to sandbox a site that isn't monetized. The exception to this is starting a blog aimed at the taboo niches like "law", "online drugs", "loans", "adult" and the rest of the spammers favorite targets. With or without monetization these type of blogs are sandboxed.

How long do you have to wait before you can monetize the site?

This answer sucks but "It depends". I have found that waiting until you develop keyword authority is the best route. The faster you develop it the faster you can monetize and this depends on how many keyword anchored backlinks you can produce over a reasonable amount of time - say a month or two - and how much original content you can produce over the same period. I didn't say how fast you could produce the backlinks as this is a mistake. You have to appear natural and getting 100 links the first week to a new blog is not natural and this will get you sent to the sandbox as quickly as monetizing your blog will. Take your time and build up your backlinks slowly but efficiently - get proper anchor text for your main keywords - not just one keyword but several different variations of it. Again this is how a natural site would grow. If every backlink uses the same term - sandbox. Be smart.

How do you know when you have enough keyword authority?

You know when you start writing new posts optimized for your keywords and they are immediately indexed and you see a movement up the serps from one post to the next. I am not talking about PR - I mean keyword authority. You can have a PR0 and rank well on the serp's if all your backlinks tell Google that you are an authority for your keywords.

To understand this use this blog as an example. In the recent PR update I lost a point - I went from a PR5 blog to a PR4 and yet most of you know I just climbed onto page 1 of the serp's for "Make Money Online". I lost PR but gained serp rankings - this is because of my keyword authority.

Once you see that you have authority then you can introduce monetization on your site and usually this will keep you out of the sandbox - not always but most of the time.

Adding Outbound Links to Your Blog.

Just like monetization, if you start a new blog and pack a bunch of links on it to other sites you will get sandboxed. Think about this - why would you put links on a new site? You want to send backlinks to other sites and usually to your own. This is why spammers create thousands of sites - they use them to send links (keyword authority - not PR) to their anchor sites or money sites. The moment you add links to a brand new blog you are seen as a likely spam site - don't do it. Wait until you can monetize the site.

The best way to avoid the "box" is to take your time writing lots of original keyword rich posts and work on your backlinks - be patient, always think about how a natural site would grow and mimic it. You aren't going to have a lot of traffic in the beginning anyway so not monetizing isn't costing you anything. Be patient and be smart.

Where did my Post Go?

On a side note I have noticed a lot of people commenting about their posts being ranked well one day on the serp's and then suddenly vanishing the next day. This refers to established non-sandboxed sites.

This is completely natural and this is why. When you write a new post on any given topic Google jumps on it because it's fresh. Fresh content is prized by Google - it keeps their index up to date on all the latest news. If you don't have enough keyword authority to take you to the first (and sometimes the second) page of the serp's you will get listed on page 3 or higher for a few days and then drop down to page 90 as other newer fresh content replaces you. You will bounce around the back pages for a while until you build up your authority. More relevant posts on the topic will help your authority just like proper backlinks do.

If you make the first page (and sometimes the second) then you are an authority and will likely stay there until some prick like me decides to bump you out by any and all means at my disposal. Don't get complacent when you reach page 1 - always add backlinks in order to keep others from overtaking you. A couple of sites on page 1 of "make money online" got complacent and are now wondering who the ass with the cheesy blogspot blog is that just passed them by. There is never a finish line folks - it keeps moving away from you as you try and catch it.

I was going to yak about Adsense and Social Traffic today but I want to optimize an entire post around the topic so it can wait until next time.

A final comment. My email is as good as broke so please ask your questions in the comments. I have noticed that my emails are from all the beginners who find my blog through the serp's and that my comments are usually from friends and experienced bloggers. I suspect that beginners are too intimidated to ask "stupid" questions in public and choose to email me instead. Please do not be intimidated as there is no question too "stupid" to ask. Everyone of us started out as a beginner and we all had to learn the same way - by asking questions. I can guarantee that none of us will ever ridicule you for asking questions - ever. I am here to help and so are my readers who I have come to know as caring and decent bloggers. If you use the comments to ask your questions they will get answered - if you send me an email I don't know when I will get to it. Fair enough? Don't be shy as you will make a lot of friends using the comments - I have.

Till next time,

Griz

your blog is great and its content are unique...but why do you write such along post? I thinks shorter posts work as good as the longer ones

Hey there,

Thank you for including me in this article. That is awesome and very appreciated. One thing I must clarify,

You said...

I don't know Garry or Josh but Garry is much like Vic, another black hatter who cuts through the crap and talks from experience.

Actually, I am as White Hat as they come. But one thing is correct, I have no problems speaking my mind.

Thanks again for including me in this wonderful post.

Best Regards,

Jim,

Thank you and the long posts are on purpose - a trial for my readers but necessary for what I do. See my post entitled... "I don't just write long articles to Annoy You".

Garry,

I probably shouldn't have used the term "black hatter" but meant it as a compliment if that's any consolation. You convey knowledge that is normally associated with the dark arts so I have assumed you have a good working knowledge of it and like Vic are now strictly "white hat". Either way you know your stuff and that's hard to come by in this niche.

A pleasure meeting you.

Great post Grizz, especially the topics of sandboxing and monetizing a site.

Thanks for the help there!

Grizz,

Another great post. Cleared a few things up there for me. Just one question though, how long would you wait before monetizing your site; is it based on the amount of traffic, or number of posts/backlinks. Just looking for an 'average' time.

Great Post Grizz- very informative as always. I had a question regarding high PR backlinks and keyword authority.

Firstly, I have been experimenting with a program called comment kahuna which searches for do follow blogs related to a keyword. Once I do find a blog and see that it is indeed do follow (using SE add-on on firefox) then i I go through the comment section and wherever I can find a high PR comment page I leave a comment with a backlink to my website.

Secondly I tried once to leave comments on digg pages (over 1 year old)to get high PR backlinks.

Although I managed to place comments on digg and blogs (do-follow) I have not seen it as a backlink to my site (when using SEO elite)

Do you think this is a good way of getting high PR link or am I just wasting my time?

Another Great Article,
Being a newbie I started creating backlinks to my posts and submitting to artilce directories. However, my blog has a PR0 and some of my posts have a PR2. Is this because I Incorretly linked my posts? i.e not to the homepage but to the actual post? Thanks again for taking the time to share your knowledge.

Thanks for the plug and the great article, Griz. Keep up the good work.

Grizzly Brears said...

Gumbi,

I'm glad I could help. Thanks for letting me know.

Nick,

I'm afraid there is no average time - that's why I said "it depends". I monetize when I notice my site is gaining ground in the serp's with each new post.

As you gain experience you will begin to notice how fast your post gets indexed, what page it lands on in the serp's and what search queries it causes Google to index you for. (aside from your main keyword) All these factors tell you how Google sees your blog and from that I know when it's safe to monetize. If the bot isn't crawling you regularly or if your pages are getting indexed in the far reaches then you have a ways to go - when the bot drops in everyday and you see keywords indexed on page 90 for one post, page 65 for the next, page 40 next and so on you know you are seen as a quality site and your authority is growing nicely.

I wish I could give you an exact timeline but this will vary for everyone depending on the quality of your backlinks and how well you optimize your posts. If you get sandboxed make a mental note of how much progress you had made and progress a little longer next time - eventually you will have a good idea of when it's safe.

Sorry Nick but that's about as clear as I can make this - we are talking about something that doesn't officially exist! Lol.

Thanks Fred (NewestOTNet) Always a pleasure having you drop in.

M98075,

Read my article "Backlinks - The Root of all Evil". Most of your answers are in the post - if you still need help let me know.

One thing I should mention is that Google doesn't show all your links and SEO Elite can only display the links that are displayed doing a link: search. You will never know exactly what Google credits you for even with webmaster tools. Getting backlinks is never a waste but some backlinks are better than others. Read my post for a full explanation and thanks for the comment.

Hi Dennis,

Actually you are doing things right - you want to get your secondary pages ranked so they rise in the serp's as well as the home page. You might want to rassle up some links for the homepage as well though. Don't worry as this situation happens quite often. All my pages on my Betta Fish site outrank the PR on my home page. Good job btw getting the PR.

Josh no need to thank me - you're exactly the type of site I would send my readers to - BTW Josh is also on page 1 of the serp's for "make money online" which tells you he knows his SEO folks.

Thanks for the comments everyone!

Grizz,

Thank you so much for this latest post; I am one of those newbs who recently emailed a question that ties into the whole 'here today- gone tomorrow - back on the day after that' indexing puzzle. Your post really cleared things up for me.

In a reply to an earlier post comment, you told me that you prefer statcounter over big G's analytics for now obvious reasons, what about big G's webtools? Would you give the thumbs up or down on using that?

Thanks again for your time and efforts Grizz.

Nick said...

Grizz,

I sort of thought that would be the case, but thanks for the benchmark on what I/we should be looking for.

Going to be a fairly long process, but I was prepared for that anyway. Off now to set up a few blogs and get my head down to writing :-)

Grizzly Brears said...

Hi Stephen,

WebmasterTools is fine to use but only with ultra clean sites - don't go adding black hat or blacklisted sites. In fact don't use it for more than a handful of sites per account - no point showing them everything although if you run adsense on all your sites they already know what you are up too.

I readily admit that I am more cautious of G than most people need to be. If everything you are doing is legit then there isn't much to worry about. I on the other hand...

Wow Griz the length of your posts always amaze me!

I don't know how the hell you find so much to say, but I'm glad you do because I get all sorts of great information from them.

Just for your own reference... I read every word of all your posts.

Grizzly Brears said...

Nick,

It may seem long at first but in six months you will start to see a light and 1 year from now you will be earning some kind of income and say to yourself "hey this IS possible and now I have a base and know the short cuts and don't waste time making mistakes and suddenly you have a growing little empire and one day 5 years from now you're going to say... wow THAT wasn't so hard at all and holy shit the money is coming in now and I don't have to do a hell of a lot for it and I might not get rich but retirement sure is looking better all the time."

... at least that's my perspective.

On a side note

Heath Ledger the actor died today and sad as that may be the blogosphere is jumping on the story. This may be a good time for some of you to try out my little "kelly Pickler" trick.

I noticed Monika jumped right in and grabbed heathledger.blogspot.com lickety split - the girl's paying attention.

Please don't think I am trivializing his death - it is tragic and very sad. I only bring it up to alert people to a possible story that may have some traffic to it.

I've meant to ask you how

makes out for you. I notice both you and Monika are connected with the site and it ranks well as you know. I was busy spying when I noticed your names. Lol.

Hey Grizz, I used your idea before I read your article. I guess I was thinking along the same lines.
Here's what I did. I have a blog called "Internet ads/slow starting", kind of a diary of a new comer trying to make money with AdSense. "Internet ads" as a key word. I subtitled my last post "Make money with AdSense- or not" and find myself on Google page 11 of key words "Make money with AdSense". It is a negative article warning about the so called AdSense "experts" who don't know enough about it themselves. If you go to the AdSense forum and read questions like "Why can't I make money"? you will find that these people have a get rich with AdSense blog. Go figure! Anyway I still get few visits and forget about clicks. This is taking longer than I thought but what the hell, it's out there and maybe it will bare fruit some day. Ben

T. B. said...

@Grizzly - It works out nicely being a guest blogger on http://www.canimakebigmoneyonline.com/

I really like guest posting there.

The site gets a lot of traffic, mostly from search engines, and has a good PR, so it's nice being able to have my name associated with it.

Plus George Manty, the owner, is a great guy!

Yes, Monika is also an author there. Actually I am not fully an author there yet simply because I haven't sent in my author agreement. But I will soon.

Talk to you later,

Another nice one Griz,

My morning has disappeared again without a word written about casinos despite looking at a Friday deadline to get 48 reviews in! Where did this morning go?

I started reading your blog, then something I read made me decide to go off and create a new Squidoo lens (don't ask!), then I went and noticed that my Make Money (The Honest Way) site is sitting nicely on page one for two long tail make money keywords.

So I checked my newest money blog and noticed I forgot to zoom the latest post, so went over to Bloggingzoom and spent far too much time there, then came back here and read some more...

Which inspired me to go and create a new blogger blog, after which I came back here again, then went to Blogger Unleashed, now I'm back here again writing this and it's 11:30 and I still haven't got any of the work that I was supposed to get done even started... D'oh!

Its all your fault you know for giving me too many ideas which breed more ideas which... means I'll have to work my ass off this afternoon (if I can keep away from all the other ideas that I have floating around...) and make some guaranteed money hahahaha!!!

PS: As I've burned my morning already I might as well go and have some coffee and think about what to write about the Costa Del Sol today hehehe...

Please stop it. ;-)

Seriously, thanks for the sandbox explanation and for the offer to ask stupid questions. Here's one (and I really do feel quite stupid): how/where do you determine the page rank for a blog? I know a PR 9 is better than a PR 2, but I don't know how those designations are assigned.

As always, thanks for your help.

Grizzly Brears said...

Hi Carla,

You can see the Pagerank of each site by instaling either the Google toolbar (Firefox or IE) or the "Search Status" addon for firefox.

"Search Status" is the better choice as it also shows you the Alexa ranking of whatever site you are visiting along with the Google pagerank.

The PR is decided by Google using the much mentioned Google Algorithm that we are constantly trying to figure out.

I'm not entirely sure this was what you were asking - ifI got it wrong let me know - still on my morning coffee.Lol

Carla said...

That's exactly what I wanted to know.
Since I just installed Firefox (Firefox rocks!), I'll get the search status add-on.

Thanks for the quick answer. Pretty good speed for a guy whose coffee hasn't kicked in yet. :-)

Hey Grizz,

I think i need a wee bit of help :D
Anyway, the first site i started with regards to your old lessons, i kinda got lazy with it and chucked it in one corner.

So lately i got bored and just decided to check up on my adsense account. TO MY SUPRISE, the site that i threw to one side is actually the only one raking up the clicks! :) For god knows why.

I posted some original content + PLR articles (lazy :p) but now I want to make all of em original to optimize it better but yet do not wanna lose my indexed status.

How do I do it? :|

Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American and Canadian users at this time. Oh and it is free.

Note - After signing up take advantage of the Fast First Training link - you can learn how the IFW system works while making yourself a quick $50.00.
