How do I get traffic to my blog or website?
This is easily the most asked question I get. Today I am going to reveal my system and if you're serious about marketing online you will go get a cup of coffee, turn off your cell phone and take a few notes.
Before I start I want you to read a letter I got yesterday from one of my readers who wants to know how I get an insane amount of articles downloaded on the article directories I use. I'm posting the letter because it relates directly to how I get traffic.
Hi Grizzly,
I have noticed that you are one of the most downloaded authors on several article directories I use. I have been posting articles for ages and I usually get 50 - 100 downloads per article and usually a lot less. You get 1000's of downloads and if you don't mind me asking, how do you do this? I promise to keep this to myself and only ask because you seem genuine about helping people online. If I can do anything in return just ask. Thanks in advance.
Jeff N.
New Zealand
Jeff is not the first person to ask and I have held off answering this until now because let's face it - this is one of those things that internet marketers tend to keep quite about. Traffic is the most important part of an online business - no traffic = no sales.
Quite frankly I have kept quiet because I don't want competition and until a few months ago I wouldn't have dreamed of telling others how I do things. I now have a secret weapon that has made the point moot because I know most people who read this will not do what I do. You will do half of my system (the free part) which does work on it's own but not the half that costs a few bucks and sends me traffic in hordes.
Before we go any farther I want you to check out one of the article directories I use just to see my results so that you know I'm not blowing smoke up your kiester.
Here is my home page at GoArticles. (It opens in a new tab or window as do all the links on this page)
You will notice a steady increase in downloads since I started using the site. I have several homepages all under different names each corresponding to different niches I'm involved in. I use several different article directories and the results are similar in all of them. I won't show you the niche articles because they are my bread and butter and I have enough competition in them already.
How to Get Traffic
Step One.
This costs nothing and will bring you a decent amount of traffic on its own.
I have said this before and I will say this again... Write an article. Optimize the article for the keyword you want targeted. Now write a second article - different content but with the same subject and same keywords. Post one article on your blog or website. Post the second article on any of the following sites with a link back to your main article on your site;
Yahoo Answers.
Squidoo.
Netscape.
Article Directories like GoArticles or Ezine Articles.
If you are really ambitious then write several different articles and post one to each of the sites listed above. This will only increase your traffic.
OK, I have left out a few steps.
You have to sign up to these sites. They are all free to join.
Yahoo Answers
With Yahoo Answers you need two accounts under different names. The first account you use to post questions if you can't find one already posted that applies to your keyword.
Example - "Has Anyone heard about Project Payday?"
The second account is used to answer your own question. This is where you post your second article (with the link to your site ). This article shouldn't look like an article so modify it to look like an answer to someone's question and give just enough info to get the reader to click your link in order to find out more.
Note: I have simplified this greatly and I recommend that you download this free report. How To Make Money With Yahoo Answers This will explain what to do and how to do it.
Yahoo answers has a lot of readers and if you give the best answer to a question you will get a fair amount of traffic. Better yet - Google loves Yahoo Answers and tends to rank it high in the search engine results pages (SERP's), usually on the first page which will get you more traffic when people are searching for your keyword.
In effect you aren't trying to get your site listed high in the SERP's but rather you use a site that does get high listings by placing your link on it for all to see.
Like this: What do you think about "Project Payday"?
Google Project Payday and look at who sits in the third position on page 1. That's right - Yahoo Answers.
If you go down to the ninth position you will see my blog and the second spot is occupied by a forum "whydowork.com" which also has a link to my site in the thread on Project Payday. Ultimately anyone looking for info on this program has a 3 in 10 chance of finding my blog on page 1 of the Google results. This is how you get traffic.
Some additional benefits.
Yahoo Answers has a PageRank of 9. That's huge. The page your answer is on won't have a PR but it is linked to the PR9 homepage which means that the search engine bots will find your page instantly. This is because they crawl the home page hundreds of times daily and follow all the links on it thereby indexing everything daily - including your page which links to your site. This is how you can get a new blog or website indexed immediately. (Write that down)
Squidoo
Join up and start a lens (your page) optimized for your keyword or in simple terms post your second article (with a link pointing to your blog or website) on your Squidoo page. Squidoo has a PageRank of 6 and is also highly ranked by the search engines. Once again you will find the Squidoo page ranked high for your keyword in the SERP's and anyone clicking on it will be directed back to your site. This will also get you indexed fast.
I won't show you my Squidoo pages as they point to my niche sites but you have no doubt seen lots of high ranking Squidoo pages in the SERP's and know how effective they are at ranking high.
Netscape
You'll notice that there is a "Submit to Netscape" ( OK some genius has changed the name to "propeller"... sheesh.) link at the bottom of this post. I regularly submit my posts to it. Like Yahoo Answers and Squidoo, Netscape gets high rankings in the SERP's. After posting your article in your blog submit it to netscape and see what happens. Don't be surprised if you start receiving traffic from the search engines from people who click on the Netscape post.
This also works for lots of the social bookmarking sites as well (digg, delicious, facebook etc) but Netscape is by far the best ranking site of the bunch. Keep in mind that you should avoid spammy articles or sales pitches when submitting to Netscape. Write your posts as news or information pieces to get the results you want.
Article Submission Directories.
There are a lot of article submission sites but stick with GoArticles or Ezine Articles as they rank best in the search engines.
Google Instant Money Vault
Google ranks the GoArticles post number 2 on page one. Click on it and it takes you to my article. How much traffic has this brought me? Go back to the top of this page and check out my GoArticles homepage - I'll save you time - it's been downloaded (viewed) over 4800 times as of this writing. I posted the article in May and it still brings me 20 - 30 visitors a day.
Notice as well the there is an Ezine Article post in the number 7 spot on Google's page 1. My blog isn't anywhere to be seen for this term and yet I get lots of traffic for it.
As I said earlier - it's easier to get a link on high ranking sites for your keywords than it is to get your own site or blog ranked high.
You don't need a high PR or lots of backlinks to get traffic. You just need to get a few well placed links on those sites that always rank high in the SERP's. While there are lots of sites like the ones I have mentioned I have found that these 5 tend to produce the best results. Keep in mind that the examples I have shown are for highly competitive keywords in a highly competitive niche ie. Internet Marketing and I have managed to do quite well.
Now if I could show you the results of my less competitive niche sites you would be astounded. In almost every case I have the top spot on Google for my primary keywords using these third party sites. I don't have to spend time getting backlinks, working on SEO or even creating lots of pages on my sites. I simply write a few articles and get them on the right pages and let the third party sites do all the work and wait for the traffic.
The best part is that if you pick popular topics you will keep getting traffic for something you did months ago. The Project Payday post on Yahoo Answers took me 10 minutes to do over 7 months ago and I still get 50 or more visitors a day from it.
Yes... it is that easy.
One last thing before I move on to Part Two. I didn't give an example for Netscape above as I wanted to save that for last.
Google Backlink Solutions
As of this writing this blog occupies positions 3 and 4 while Netscape holds down spots 6 and 8, GoArticles has position 9 and another third party site - Google Groups - holds down the 7th spot. This means that 6 of the 10 spots on page 1 all point directly or indirectly back to my blog. How sweet is that?
I wanted to leave this example for last because I used Backlink Solutions to accomplish this 6 out of 10 listing. This is the secret weapon I mentioned above.
Part Two
Backlink Solutions
(Note: This is an affiliate link - you can either give me a commission or give all the money to the site - unlike clickbank you can't get an affiliate ID until after you join. Since you can't save any money I have no problem adding my link. The choice is yours if you would rather give all your money to the owners. The program has added new High PR blogs to the system as of Jan 2008 and I am recommending them again.)
OK, before reading any farther I want to mention that this will cost you a monthly membership to Backlink Solutions. If you don't have the money don't panic. You can achieve everything I have shown you above just by doing what I showed you and it costs nothing. The one exception is the results for the keyword search for Backlink Solutions. To get so many links on the first page of Google I submitted my articles as outlined above and then took things a bit farther - I posted several links to all of those pages listed (My Blog, Netscape, Google Groups and GoArticles) from my PR5 and PR4 blogs at Backlink Solutions.
Let me explain this. ( If you are not familiar with Backlink Solutions see my previous posts here)
Basically I added juice to these already high PR third party sites by giving their low PR page (containing my article and link) a boost by linking to them from several high PR blogs that contained the proper anchor text ie. "Backlink Solutions". In essence I made sure that Google would rank all these third party sites high because several other high ranking sites had backlinks to the articles contained on their pages.
How effective is this technique. Well aside from all the page 1 spots on Google go back and check how many times my article has been downloaded on GoArticles (over 30,000 times). A huge increase to say the least.
This my friends is how to get serious traffic.
I can't stress this enough - if you are serious about making some real money on the net then do what I have outlined in Part 1 and when you are ready to move to the next step sign up with Backlink Solutions and start collecting the most useful links.
I wanted to mention another technique I use but as this post is getting epic I think I will wait till next time. You have enough to get started with at the moment so take my advice - start writing articles.
Till next time,
Grizzly

wow, that's an awesome information. i never submit articles to article directories to get traffic to my site, but now that you've mentioned i i consider trying this technique.. thanks for this terrific information.
Grizzly, as always another excellent post and information. I came to know of this technique earlier but never really understand how it work or realized it's potential until I saw your articles download stats in GoArticles. WoW that's just amazing.
I will definitely post some of my articles on GoArticles :)
Great ideas.. I tried this technique before with another site and had great success so I'll be back testing it out again.
Traffic is such a huge key to success, if anyone wants to read more about it feel free to check out my blog on "Insane Money Blog Tips"

I am new to this and there is SO much to learn! It's all a bit mind-boggling to be honest. Thank you for the tips...I shall try a few of them out. I'm not too optimistic about making any money from my blog (I just don't have the business sense), but it's certainly affirming to be getting readers, and here's hoping that these tips really help! Thanks again for the advice.
Hi Griz,
This site charges really low flat fees for lifetime links: http://www.isellpagerank.com/
It seems to good to be true. Have you had any experience with them?
Thanks!
Carla
thanks for these tips.
you have so much more useful information that stupid pictures of you wearing free t-shirts and food!
based on your posts, i've decided to start a site dedicated to payday loans - haha.
let's see how it works out.if nothing else it should be a good learning experience.
thanks!
Living off dividends...
hmmm... T-shirt and food posts, now who could you be referring to...
Wouldn't it be nice to make a living that way - lol.
Payday Loans,
If you succeed please send me a link! Good luck - it's a pretty cut throat niche though.
He he - just read your first article on the article site. Yur funny Griz. I like funny - a lot.
My questions - how different is that article from the first post in your blog. They seem pretty similar.
How do you deal with the duplicate content issue?
thanks...
Irene,
I have tested duplicate articles in the past just to see how Google would handle them. The results were not good as they basically indexed the higher PR site and ignored the lesser. As a result I only advise using original content for full posts although the jury is still out when it comes to snippets of articles. Small blurbs appear to get indexed on many sites and yet they are duplicates. Google seems to have a double standard in this regard. In any event stick to original content and you will always be ahead of the game.
Thanks for your fast reply.
But just so I get this clear. Are you saying that now when you post to Go Articles you make sure that your post is substantially different - but back with your first post, you didn't.
I checked the 2 articles, and they looked pretty much the same, though the first line was different.
Is that all it takes? all we have to do is change the first line of our article to differ it from our post?
Or - you are saying something way different.
Just wanting to know how different does it have to be to not be duplicate content. It's not like we have to worry about copyright, we are the writers of both. We just have to worry about Google's ability to spot exact copies.
Thanks a mill.
Kinsey,
I make sure my posts are totally different now. When I started this blog it was just one more of many blogs I experimented with. I was trying to see just how little you could change a post and avoid the duplicate penalty. (In order to use article generation software without all the work involved) On some blogs I changed the whole first paragraph, on others the first and last, on others just the titles and headers but they always failed. In the end you can get away with small snippets but the bulk of the post has to be original.
I rarely take other's word for something and just have to find out for myself.
Note: One of the reason's I like blogger so much is that you can do a lot of experimenting quickly and at no cost.
Anyway - use original content - it's more work but pays off in the long run.
Hi Grizz,
Thank you so much for giving such valuable information.
I read your posts for one hr minimum everyday. Started on Dec 23, 2006 and move upwards. Sometimes re-read and take notes.
My questions:
1. I write a post in my site. Then re-edit the post and submit to GoArticles. Now if I am submitting to Ezine articles.com; squidoo lens; hub pages, can I use the same GoArticles article or unique content separately for each one of these.
2. there are like 200 or more article directories, I subscribed to Article Marketer. It sends out the same article to all directories.
Which service do you use, ( ultimate article wizard claims it sends unique version to each article directory).
How many directories we need to submit if we are doing manually.
thanks.
Roger,
The more unique content you use the better. I post a re-edited copy to everything but this is a lot more work. I also submit everything manually. This means that I don't use 200 directories as it would take forever. Instead I use less with better quality content. You can use a submitter and use duplicate content but your results may not be as good.
thank you Grizz.
Hello Gizz, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts regarding how to build traffic on any blog or sites.. I salute you for this..
Hi Grizz,
To answer your question, I get just a so-so amount of traffic from Google Images. That's actually a good thing because some ad types can't be seen when a page is accessed through Google Images. People can click to open the page in a new window and have the ads appear, but I wonder how many do.
I was referring to the fact that if a page on a site/blog or the entire Web property is known for giving away free images, it attracts MSN and Yahoo traffic, in addition to regular Google traffic and an additional smaller stream from Google Images.
For example, if you had a gallery of free tropical fish images you gave away that were named with not only keywords but as much description as you could pack into the file names without being spammy, the engines would bring a whole other stream of traffic to the site. Be sure to mention the word "free," the colors of the fish and other minor details. That should bring some nice long-(fish)tail traffic. Sorry for the horrible pun; it had to be done. ;-)
BTW, if you ever want to do a photo section, check out sxc.hu. Most of the photos are free (see the notes for each) and if you leave a comment for a photographer telling him you used the photo and give him the URL where it's posted, you'll get a backlink from a high PR site. :-)
One last tip: Windows Live Writer is a great tool for putting images on a blog. I don't think it works with Blogger, but it's perfect for WordPress.
Carla
I just realized, if you print out your whole site, and slap someone across the face with it, it would hurt a lot. Yeah. You have that much.

Hey Boo Boo... lol.
Hey griz, what do you think of power article rewriter? http://powerarticlerewriter.com/demovideo/
You actually have to put effort into rewriting articles, but when you hit rewrite, it produces human friendly (lol) articles.
boo
Boo - I am not familiar with that one - there are a number of article spinners available and I would recommend Frank's Blog Content Wizard - see this post. http://makemoneyforbeginners.blogspot.com/2008/09/blog-content-wizard.html
I haven't used it (I re-write by hand these days) but Frank's a good guy and is known to all of us which means there is real help available should you run into problems.
If you are using the one you mentioned - what's your impression of it?
This isn't really an auto spinner. You do actually have to put in some effort to it, like what you're doing manually rewriting, you'll end up with quality rewritten articles that won't offend humans reading it haha. The results for me usually come out 60%+ unique when you use it to check from the original source, dunno if that's good or bad. I only rewrite 20 copies of one article though.
I think you should download the free trial and check for yourself, you might find it useful since you also rewrite manually.

Hi Griz,
Thanks for another informative post. I’ve been reading your site for a month or so. I’ve used your Niche Support page, and met several very nice, helpful people there. I decided to go back to the beginning and read all of them. (btw there were well over 600 pages!)
It’s clear that acquiring quality backlinks anchored with variations of your targeted keyword are the most important thing to do -- spend 90% of your time gathering these backlinks for all pages, not just for your home page, and 10% of your time creating content that’s optimized for the targeted keywords.
How to obtain these links? You suggest many methods, including the following (listed in no particular order):
· Article Submissions, not directory submissions
· Your blog’s Niche Support group
· Links from Hubpages / Squidoo Lenses
· Links from within one’s own portfolio or blogs and/or websites
· .edu and/or /gov sites
· Purchasing links (you claim to spend $750/month – $3.26/site) -- You’ll be faced with the "ethical" dilemma of whether or not to cheat -- buy links. If you want to make serious money online, then you will be faced with this decision.
· Forums
· Avoid link exchanges that are link farms
These backlinks should be obtained as the tortoise might (as opposed to the hare), slowly and steadily…
So what are my questions? My questions have to do with this comment from one of your posts:
“…How do we get those quality backlinks?" I have answered this privately on a few forums not available to the public. Most of you understand what I have told you but still don't know where to look. I have subtly left a trail in my sidebar and footer sections that will lead you to where you want to go. The lower they appear in my blog the least effective they are and that's as much as I will say about this in public…”
Could you possibly elaborate (either publicly or privately via email) – which forums have you posted this information in? Can you direct me to pertinent forum postings or explain further in some manner. Also, can you offer some details as to purchasing links? I suspect these two issues are intertwined.
Thanks for the great bog. Sorry for the really long comment.
Lane
Hi Grizz,
Fair play, great site.
I'm working my way through your site one very long post at a time! It's worth it although I may have grown grey hairs before actually getting my site up and running.
Question, is this post for submitting articles still up to date, ie are the sites you've listed still the best ones?
By the way if you answered the last comment to Lane I'd love to know the answer too.
Thanks,
Jamie.
I would like to know that answer too :-)
Lane
Hi Griz, Im a noobie and just looking into making money online so your blog is a great read for me, ive never commented so ill just say thanks for all the great info!
I do have one question and it may be a little off topic but would you recommend making different blogger accounts for each niche blog? Or just having one account? You mentioned earlier that you had 6 on one niche, were they on different accounts?
Bumbee
Hey, newcomer here.
I've decided to use all the time I've wasted to make money somehow, someway and stumbled on this site.
I ate it all within a week (I've got that much time)
Oh, but college season is in, and now my time is running from me!!
I'd like to say that Yahoo Answers advice was the real deal, I just started but I can see how social media is still good for marketing. I've seen all these questions that I've left unanswered in my own niche, so I can edit my information and cater to the customers and look more presentable and legit to authority figures like the Big G. And getting backlinks have never been so easier than writing a little blurb and slapping on a link here and there when appropriate - someone as lazy as myself would find this a blessing.
Thanks for the advice Griz, and keep up the work everyone!
