Make Money Using Blogs - Lesson 1

How to Set Up a Blog on Blogger.com

This post was originally created in early 2007 and there have been numerous changes done to Blogger since that time. Most of these lessons are still applicable but there have been some changes. Rather than re-writing them all from scratch I have added little "Update" sections (in March 2008) where necessary. If the Make Money Using Blogs posts (There are 5 of them) seem a little contradictory at times this is the reason why. If I have missed anything or you find something that just doesn't jive please let me know and I will fix it. Thanks and if at anytime you don't understand something please leave a comment.

Griz.

Judging from the emails I have been receiving, a lot of my readers are a bit overwhelmed by the online money making business. You probably don't know where to start and it's hard to get anyone who knows what to do to spill the beans. This is by design as letting everyone in on what works and how to do it is thought to be a death blow to all those currently making money online. I don't share this view. There are potentially several billion buyers out there and estimates of about 150,000 online marketers. There is room for every one.

If you are starting out, you probably don't know how to go about setting up an online business.

You have lots of questions;

Do I need a website?
Do I buy one or build my own?
How do I build my own?
What do I put on my site?
How do I find a niche market?
What is a niche market?
How do I sell stuff?
How do I set up adsense?
What is adsense?
What is adwords?
What tools do I need?
How do I generate traffic (visitors) to my site?
What's the secret behind making money?
etc...

I'm sure the list could go on for a while yet.

The point is most of you want to know where and how to start an online money making venture. The trouble is that all the online marketers are only too happy to tell you what to do... as long as you buy the product(s) that they offer. Everyone has a different scheme for you to try. A sure-fire guaranteed way to get rich! You have heard this enough I'm sure. Who do you trust?

Let's get down to the basics, before you start spending money needlessly. Forget about websites, forget affiliate marketing, forget adwords, forget MLM and JV's, forget everything and start from scratch.

Let's start with "Google Adsense" and Blogs.

This is the cheapest and fastest way to get started making money online. You can set up a blog for free. Google will provide advertisements for your blog for free. You will earn an immediate commission from Google each time some one clicks an advertisement on your blog. Once you get your blog up and running you can diversify with affiliate marketing and other methods of making money. A blog is very simple to manage. The new Blogger (just out of Beta) program (owned by Google) is a beginners dream as a complete computer illiterate can set up a blog just following the onscreen directions. Once you have a blog you will then learn how to market it - get traffic to your site. When you have learned how to do this you can transfer this knowledge to websites and other online ventures. A blog will teach you the basics and you can learn without spending gobs of cash in the process.

I'm sure you have seen screenshots of people who are making hundreds of dollars a day from adsense. Is this bullsh*t? Nope. They earn what they say but beware that they are not telling you the whole story.

There are several strategies for making money with Google Adsense but let's look at the two most common.

1)Using Adwords or other paid advertising to generate traffic to your Adsense sites and hence generate Adsense clicks.

2) Getting free traffic using SEO techniques (Search Engine Optimization) and harnessing the power of multiple Blogs to generate Adsense revenue.

So what is the trick?

Using Adwords

This is what they don't tell you.

A lot of those screen shots show you the money they brought in. They never tell you how much they spent to earn that income. They may make $600 a day but if they are using adwords to generate traffic then they likely spent several hundred a day as well. They always show you the gross, not the net. This doesn't mean that they aren't making a profit - they are or they wouldn't continue day after day - but that their profit is a lot less than they lead you to believe. This is done in order to make you believe that the product they are selling will help you generate profits of $600 a day. If they were completely honest they would admit that it might generate SALES of $600 a day - not PROFITS.

Using free traffic

This is what they don't tell you.

This is the best way for a beginner to start out. Build a blog on a particular niche(topic), create good quality content for it, have Google index and rank your page high for your keyword (topic) and sit back as Google sends hordes of visitors to your site. Finally, count your money from all the Adsense clicks. Right? Well almost.

This is the procedure but they don't tell you that to make serious money at this you will need to create dozens of blogs. Yes, you heard right. Your main blogs will have decent pages addressing the needs of your visitors and suitable for marketing products. The majority of the blogs however, will be set up to simply generate Adsense clicks. The articles will be unique but crappy and visitors that end up on these blogs will quickly leave - hopefully by clicking an ad that will take them to where they were trying to go in the first place. This is called spam blogging and as unethical as it seems, it is how many people make a lot of money with Adsense. No one talks about this aspect of making adsense profits. No one wants to admit that they use this tactic and yet this is the main method of generating decent money with Adsense with out spending money to get traffic.

This is also the system (modified a bit) that I recommend to all beginners. It's the cheapest way to start earning cash, it will teach you all the main aspects of Internet marketing and you can start immediately. However, you will have to decide if ethics or making money is your top priority first.

Decided?

Let's begin.

We will keep this simple to start. In future posts I will explain more and more techniques as we go. For now we need to get a few blogs set up.

Go to Blogger.com and set up your account.

When you have completed this we can begin.

Before creating your blog you will have to find a topic. This is called a niche. There is a lot to learn about finding the right niche but for now just pick a topic you like. Let's learn how to set up a blog before we worry about what kind of blog will make money.

I will set up a new blog with you so you can see how I do it.

In blogger select Create Account.

Select a name. Try and use your keyword in the name and the blog address. (Use Capitals in your name but only lower-case in blog address.)

ie. I want to call my blog "Blogger Basics for Beginners" using the following address "http://bloggerbasics.blogspot.com". When I checked the availability I was told this address was already taken.

When this happens try using a dash like this;
"http://blogger-basics.blogspot.com" - notice the dash, this is a way to still use your main keyword by adding a dash between them. As it happens this address is also taken.

Next I try this;

"http://beginner-blogger-basics.blogspot.com" - This address is available and I am still able to use my keyword in the address and my title which is "Blogger Basics for Beginners".

Note: The more popular the niche the harder it will be to get an address for your keyword. If you are doing a "shoe" blog I can assure you that all possible "shoe" combination's are gone. If you are using "Pre-Cambrian Rock Formations" as a keyword you can probably get it for your address.

It is important to use your keyword in your Blog's Title and Address. This will greatly help you when it comes to search engine rankings and indexing. This is a big topic that I won't get into right now - just trust me on this.

Fill in the word verification and hit continue.

Note: The reason for the word verification is to stop automated programs from setting up thousands of blogs. Basically it is there to stop you from doing what I am going to show you how to do. Don't worry, it doesn't stop the automated programs, they have evolved to take this delay in hand and let you work around it.

March 2008: Update. It now appears that Blogger has a new flagging system that can catch most auto-software trying to set up multiple accounts. As you can no longer use link farms effectively this is a moot point and you should only be creating 3-4 blogs per account. Do not use the same keywords in each blog. ie. Don't create related blogs in each account. If you want ten blogs targeted to 1 niche then put each blog on a separate account.

You will now be asked to select a template. Later you can experiment with all the different templates but for now just choose Minima as you will find it easier to follow along with me. (It is the first choice and it should already be selected automatically) I have found this to be the most professional looking template and I use it frequently. You are reading this post on a Minima template. It is also perfectly optimized for SEO without having to tweak it.

Hit continue to select the Minima Template.

Next you will see a page that says "Your Blog has been created".

That's all there is to it.

Hit "Start Posting" and we will begin the next step.

Before posting let's go into "Settings" and make a few customizations.

Fill in your description. Make sure you use your keyword at least once in your description. (Update - see Common Blogging Mistakes and Common Blogging Mistakes - Part 2 for more details)

After your description scroll down the page and hit "Save Settings". Don't change any of the yes/no settings. Leave them on default.

Select the "Publishing" tab.

Select "Yes" where it says "Notify Webogs.com" and hit "Save Settings" (the default is NO) This will help notify the outside world each time you post something to your blog.

Select "Formatting"

Change "Show" to 1 posts on the main page. (Default is 7)

Select your time zone.

Set "Show Link Field" to Yes.

Leave everything else as is and hit "Save Settings".

Select "Comments"

Select "Show" for Backlinks.

Select "Yes" for Pop up Window.

Select "No" for Word Verification.

Enter your email for comment notification.

Hit "Save Settings", and leave the rest of the options on default.

Select "Archiving"

Make sure the frequency is set to "Monthly" and the "Enable Post Pages?" is set to "Yes".

Hit "Save Settings"

Select "Posting" and we are ready for your first post.

You will notice that you have a Title Field, a Link Field, and a big box where you will type in your post.

It is important that each and every title you use has a keyword (a term you want to rank for) in the Title. (Again this relates to SEO - and again just trust me without further explanation at this point.)

In the link field you want to type in your blog address so that the post links back to your blog (your home page or the post page).

My link is typed as follows; http://beginner-blogger-basics.blogspot.com/ - this is the URL of my homepage.

Replace beginner-blogger-basics with your address.

My first post is short and to the point. It will mention my keywords at least twice.

It reads as follows;

Welcome to Blogger Basics for Beginners. This site provides tips and techniques for beginning bloggers in order to make money online. If you have questions not covered in Blogger Basics please feel free to email your question to bla bla bla

Make your first post the same way. Use your keywords a couple of times and then hit "Publish".

Then hit "View Blog"

Congrats - you are now a blogger. Simple wasn't it?

Now you can customize your blog. You will notice that your title is a hypertext link pointing to your site. On the right hand side of the page is a section called "Blog Archive" and below that is an "About Me" section.

You can add and remove any section you like by selecting "Customize" from the top right corner of your screen.

I am going to remove the "About Me" section and add a new section for Adsense. Always leave the "Blog Archives" so that visitors can find your previous posts.

Select "Customize"

Click the edit link on the "About Me" box. I am going to select the "Remove Page Element" option to get rid of this but if you want to keep the "About Me" section just fill in the info boxes and click "Save Changes".

Let's Add a Page Element. From the main customization screen click the link that says "Add a Page Element" (Use the right hand column box - not the one on the bottom of the page.)

You will get a pop-up screen with a lot of Page Elements listed on it.

Let's add Adsense to our blogs. Click the Adsense "Add to Blog" button. If you don't have an Adsense account follow the instructions to get one. You will get a publisher ID from Google that will enable you to post adsense ads on your blog. Once you have this pick a Format and use the Blend Template option regarding colors. (it's the default).

Update: Note - if you want to use adsense channels to track your blogs then you will have to create your Adsense code in Adsense Setup in your Adsense account and then copy/paste the code generated into your blog manually. Don't use the "Adsense" element for this - use the "HTML/JavaScript" element and paste in the code after the box opens.

Update: As of February 2008, Google requires all blogs using Adsense to post a Privacy Policy on their blogs. To see what this entails view mine in the sidebar A Very Boring Privacy Policy"

For right hand column ads I stick to the 160 x 600 vertical Banner Format.

Click "Save Changes" and you will notice that an Adsense box has been added to your right hand column at the top.

Click "View Blog" and see the results.

It takes a little while for Google to recognize your content and place corresponding ads on your site. At first you may only see public service ads or nothing until Google figures out your keywords. Just be patient as this is normal. Having said that, I was given ads related to Blogs/Make Money immediately and you may have got appropriate ads as well if you followed my instructions. Why? Remember I told you to use your keywords several times in setting up your blog. I did this so that the Google bot will have no problem figuring out what your blog is about. If your keyword is about something that has advertisements Google will find the ads. If you used the "Pre-Cambrian" keyword you may never get anything but public service ads as I doubt that there are many advertisers selling anything related to this keyword... I could be wrong though.

Let's stop for today and let you concentrate on the next lesson. You will have to sit down and write one decent article about your keyword. (I can hear you non-writers cringing at the thought) Later I will show you how to get unique content without writing your own but for now you will have to bare down and do a little typing.

Before leaving go to my just created Blog Blogger Basics For Beginners and make sure that yours is set up like mine.

PS. Don't be afraid to add and delete elements/Widgets on your blog in the meantime. Play around and learn how to use the Page elements. You can also edit the Blog's type, fonts, colors and element positions. Experiment a bit. Just don't delete your initial post.

Hi Hawthorn,

Thanks for the comment. I will be doing more posts but have been waiting for the latest Google Page Rank update (every three months) which is occuring right now and will slowly crawl along for the next week or two.

For those of you waiting please be patient as I have several test blogs in the works that have been set up to see which is most effective regarding all the new rules Google imposed after it's latest Google Slap. (Changes to the Google algorithm)

Upon completion of the current Page Rank update I will know which way to proceed with future lessons. The current lessons are still valid as far as how to set up and optimize your blogs. The changes imposed by Google relate to page ranking and traffic generation techniques.

For now continue to set up your blogs as outlined in my lessons but don't link them together. This is blog farming and Google will now penalize sites that do this from the same ip addresses. All blogger blogs are on the same ip address.

Other than this just follow my directions and get your blogs started - I have a number of new techniques that I will share with you but will wait until I have some page rank confirmation.

Hello you with no name... grrrr

Yes you can make money with a blog. I do all the time. I typically create a niche blog, optimize it for the search engines, make the front page in the serps and then collect money from affiliate programs like clickbank or commission junction. I also make a fair bit from adsense ads. I am either paid directly from Clickbank, Google etc. by check or receive payments directly into my paypal account. I pay taxes on my earnings in Canada and suggest you follow the tax requirments in the UK. Not worth getting caught cheating.

Hope this helps.

Hi Grizzly,
I did not see the button "notify weblogs" under the publishing tab. Has the site been redesigned? Please tell me how I can make sure weblogs will be notified.

Grizzly Brears said...

I really have to update these posts one day.

What you are looking for is now located under "Settings" - "basic" and the fields "Add your blog to our listings?" and "Let search engines find your blog?" should both be set to Yes. This replaces the old weblogs tab.

Hi Grizzly. I have yet to actually reap the benefits of making money through, blogging, but if this first post is any indicator, it sounds very easy and fun! Thanks for providing the resources to those of us who have no idea where to start!

Thank you for this wonderful post, Grizz.

I noticed that while you have a tutorial in text format, you don't seem to have one in video format (Camtasia screencast).

Is this deliberate, given that search engines love text?

Grizzly Brears said...

Manuel,

You answered your own question - it's all about content and text is the only content Google reads.

Hi,

I am terrible at blogging and enjoyed your article! You have extremely good content. My question is: Once you sign up with blogspot.com why do you need to grant them access to your adsense account? I couldn't find an answer to that anywhere on your page. My apologies for the long post, but this is what the email said: In order to use AdSense through blogger.com, you'll need to grant blogger.com access to the ad code and reports in your AdSense account. To offer you special features for displaying your ads or viewing statistics on their website, partner websites ask our system for access to your AdSense account. We then require your confirmation for this request. While you're free to choose whether or not to grant access, please be aware that this access may be required in order to display ads, generate revenue, or view reports on the partner site. Should you decide to grant access, the partner will be able to manage some parts of your account on your behalf and access certain reports to display them for you. Note that they will never be allowed access to personal information such as bank account or payment history.
The website blogger.com has requested access to your account:

Yes, allow blogger.com to access my account
No, do not allow blogger.com to access my account
! Important - you are choosing to deny blogger.com access to the ad code and performance information in your AdSense account. If you continue, you will not be able to manage your AdSense account through blogger.com.

Note that for services that blogger.com provides, they will keep a percentage of the revenue that you accrue on their website as described below...

Just sounded strange to me....

Grizzly Brears said...

Blogging,

You don't have to allow Blogger access to your Adsense account but this is a feature that Google has added for convenience. Google owns Blogger and makes it easy to use Adsense right from the page elements in Blogger if you give Blogger access to your Adsense account.

There is nothing shady going on - it's just a fast way to apply Adsense if you want to use it.

Wow!! What an eye opener!! I have several WordPress blogs but they don't make much $$$$. I was writing posts that were interesting but now too SEO. I listened to some other blog hotshots (supposedly). This is exactly what I needed!!

Awesome blog...awesome articles!!

Can you please write a post on selecting keywords?

I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks,

I actually was doing what you mentioned and I thought I was nuts to even be doing it. By this I am referring to creating a lot of blogs. Your article is an affirmation that I am on the right path. Of course I also ensure that those I have created will not be considered splogs so I kinda do a little bit with them. Hopefully, as I move along, these will bring me to where i want to go. :)

Good Free RPG Games said...

Can I ask why you say "In the link field you want to type in your blog address so that the post links back to your blog." why wouldn't you want the article to link to it's own page?

Grizzly Brears said...

RPG Games,

You want every post to link back to the homepage. Eventually all your old articles will/should develop PR and keyword authority as they age and you want that link juice pointing back to your main page in order to increase it's PR and keyword authority.

Hey Grizzly,
This is probably a stupid question.
In the create account on "blogger.com" the first item to enter is an e-mail address. Do I need to set up a new e-mail account with Google? My only e-mail address is with Yahoo. It's no big deal. I just don't want to screw up.

thanks,
Rick from Tampa

Grizzly Brears said...

Rick,

There are no "Stupid Questions" so if you aren't sure - just ask.

You can use any email address you like. Just use a different one for each Blogger account you open - if you get to that stage. Remember no more than a handful of blogs on any one account.

On a side note:

If you intend on using Google's Webmaster Tools then make sure your email addresses are valid.

Rick S said...

Grizzly,

With your guidance I just published my first blog. You made it very simple, thank you, but I still screwed up. At the end of the blog it says it was posted by "Baby's First Toys". Help, where did I eff up?

The name used in the posts is set by you.

Go to your Dashboard - then click Edit Profile (Top Right Corner of Page)

Go to the Identity section.

Under "Display Name" enter the name you want showing at the bottom of your posts.

That's it.

I just wanted to know how I can add links of other websites and blogs in my own blog. (that is, in my blog there be links that if you lick them you can visit another blog, web page etc.

It's called a hypertext link - meaning that someone can click it and be taken elsewhere.

You can see how to build the link in Lesson Two. Just scroll down the page until you see the example posted using "Dog Grooming".

Hi Grizzly - thanks for the excellent blog but I have a question. If I understood you right you say to only have 3 or 4 blogs in an account, but that you need hundreds of blogs to make money, so that means having 50 or more accounts. I remember when I set u my Google account it was a long and painful hassle that involved receiving stuff by snail mail and giving codes over the telephone. Is this really what you mean ? Or have I misunderstood ?

Rather than explaining my current methods in the comments I am working on an updated set of posts to replace these lessons. Hi Griz

I am new here, although it has taken me about 2 weeks to read every single post you have made!! Fantastic stuff. I have taken action and set up a single test blog as you have laid out. It was indexed in 3 days and all my posts continued to be indexed for the next 12 days, some within 3 minutes of posting. Then my older posts did not show up in the index for 7 days, now some of them are showing up again. Is this normal to happen in a blogs early days?

I think the key word is patience, oh, and content!! Looking forward to more of your posts.

How do you create the pipe sign and is it more valuable than a forward slash?

Grizzly said...

Don,

The pipe sign is located above the backward slash " \ " - at least on my keyboard. Looks like this "|".

It is used to replace all the conjunctions that G doesn't read anyway and makes things tidier for the bots. (ie. use it instead of "and" or commas etc.)

You can see how I use it to list all my keywords in my blog description up top.

Hey~
I just found your site this week and I have been doing a lot of reading.
I first want to thank you for the FREE information. Second, I have a few questions. I have an existing website, will this work on website and not just blogs? And if I'm understanding correctly can I write articles for GoArticles and get backlinks to my website and not my blog?
Thank you again!

Re; Privacy Policy,

Folks you can just copy my privacy policy. Just be sure to change the particular links to your own.

Before I post anything I would like to make one thing very clear before it becomes obvious. I am new at this.As a matter of fact this is my second post to someones blog. Not that I think that, that in itself is flattering I am just reiterating the I'm new at this statement. That being said I have been reading your post off and on for a few weeks How to Make Money online for beginners.I find it informative to say the least. I believe I will have to camp out here for a while to get a better education. I have tried making money online with not so much luck so far. I made a page on blogger about a People Search affiliate program I joined. At any rate it's just one page that took me about a week to complete.Ive submitted on ppc because it links to the People Search program. I have determined that I can't afford to do that often.(or Ever)So I took some advise and started looking thru forums and looking for free advertising sites. I have been getting some traffic but nothing much. However the other day I was looking,( Quite frankly I'm not sure where), and I saw my whole page being advertised word for word and It wasn't by me! After a closer look I realized someone had taken my name out and replaced his where it appeared he wrote it.I had installed a copyscape button on it and when I clicked it, it showed 5 different classified sites and some blogs with my entire page on it.I wasn't sure if I should be mad or flattered (so I settled on both). My problem is what if anything should I do about it, as I have stated I haven't been getting a lot of traffic with it but it was my first page. I guess I kinda got a little attached to the damn thing. In closing if you have any suggestions I would appreciate it. Thanks
If you want to see my page it's at http://monetizingpeoplesearch.blogspot

In the link field you want to type in your blog address so that the post links back to your blog (your home page).

Do you still recommend to enable this in the Blogger settings? Seems counter productive to do this for every post. Wouldn't you want the URL to be more keyword stuffed? Why would you want every post title to link back to the homepage?

I came across one of your blog posts earlier today and think I have spent the last 3 or so hours reading through your blogs and all your GREAT information. Just wanted to thank you sooo much for the time you put into this! I have learned so much already (mind you I am SUPPOSED to be working, haha) and decided to start my first "practice" blog. I followed your first set of steps and plan on reading through the rest of them, but in the mean time I just wanted to say thanks and that I really enjoyed your stuff.

Hi,

I "accidentally" came across your blog, and it is wonderful.

I just have one little question. At the beginning of Lesson 1, you state that "you will need to create hundreds or thousands of blogs." At the same time, it was my impression that you do this on a part-time basis and earn very well. How in the world can you do that and also write for and manage hundreds, let along thousands, of blogs? I cannot even conceive of doing such a thing.

Jagzo33,

Rumor has it that you may need a self hosted blog in order to sign up with Adsense these days. I'm not positive this is the case but have had a number of people mention this. (I signed up years ago so things might have changed)

If so - buy a domain name and get a hosting account and then apply to Google. (You can get a domain name at GoDaddy.com and find hosting at Hostgator.com - just a suggestion as I use them but there are lots of alternatives.)

hi,I hope u r content will be very useful.I followed u r instuctions.
but please explain me about this.

To see what this entails view the bottom of this Blog - Look for the Header, "Privacy Policy"

log home guy said...

I can't find the privacy policy header here. Does G still require this on our blogs?

Grizzly said...

Sorry about the confusion re: Privacy Policy. Yes you need a policy if using Adsense. I moved the post to it's own post page and you can access it from the sidebar link titled "a very boring privacy policy" (just below the "about me" links.

log home guy said...

Thanks Grizzly
I should have seen that!
I got through lesson one and adsense is already enabled on my blog.I just don't know how to move my Privacy Policy to "it's own post page" on the side bar.
Realize you don't have time for dumb questions, I just need some direction.

Hi Grizzly,

I found your blog(s) last night at about 11:00 pm.
I could not stop reading. I stayed up way too late for my own good. Thank you for putting out "real" and usable information.

I'm at the end of lesson one and am also stuck on the privacy policy thing. I know to copy yours and edit it as appropriate. What I don't get is how do I add it to the right sidebar as it's own page with a text link, as yours is? I tried a text widget, that did not work (it put the privacy policy on the sidebar, not as a link on the sidebar).

Thanks in advance for any assistance you may be able to provide.

Keep up the great work!

Grizzly said...

RE: Adding the Privacy Page.

You will have to post the Privacy Page just as any other post (you can backdate it if you don't want it to show as your current post or have a second real post ready for posting in order to knock the Privacy post off the home page - assuming you have set your blog to show only 1 post per page)

Once you have posted it then add a link in the sidebar pointing to the privacy post page URL. (the URL in the archive - not the homepage URL if it is showing as your current post)

-- I don't understand this, you are only supposed to have one adsense account. So I can only make 3 or 4 sites with this account??? Or are you telling us to have 3 or 4 blogger.com accounts? Can I use the same adsense password or various blogger accounts??? I am not creating "link farms" - the sites I am creating are all going to have articles that are original and that I wrote myself, If I am doing this can I have like 40-50 sites on the same blogger account?

My advice is keep on reading and looking for a real fact and you can start earn money then.

I do not understand why you should create a different account for each post that is in the same niche.
Isn't it the point to relate them as to send traffic to that page or use the keyword often to generate traffic those pages.

Hi Griz,

Thanks for the awesome info. I have been following you for a little less than a month.

I wish I had found you a few years ago. You would have saved me beaucoup money and time that I wasted on scam meisters.

I have been trying to make money online since Ferurary 2005.

As Lis says, "How come you're still around".LOL

I'm either stubborn or stupidly persistent, or both,or something worse, I guess, but what else can one do when they retire and lose a chunk of their nest egg in the market and was a terrible programmer in the last reincarnation. I can do the techie stuff, but it detracts from marketing, back links, reading your info, etc..

I've got 50+ websites not counting Squido, blogspot and Hubpages. I have very few back links. Duh!

I make a little over a buck a day and that's up quite a bit since I started following you - mostly adsense.

I started out with SBI and still have one site there, htt[://www.capecod-beaches.com/, all of my other sites are done in Wordpress.

One of my sites, http://www.gettingridofwoodpeckers.com/ gets over 1K uniques day. I have Amazon ads on it related to repelling woodpeckers, but not much luck with the clicks, so I'm wondering if I should add AdSense to it or would that detract from the Amazon ads? Probably not since I make nothing on Amazon.

I am creating a blog called Adsense Blogging for Neophytes.blogspot.com/. Not that I am a real expert, but I know a little. I have to monetize it now.

The information you present is mind boggling, to say the least, and I have not been through it all, yet, but I make a little progress every day and between you and M&C I hope to be making more as I learn more. This month I will get a check for a little over $100 from Google and a couple hundred more from affiliates - not much, but a lot more than I made last year.

Thanks You for putting me in touch with Mark and Courtney of Keyword Academy. The seem to be strait shooters like you.

I can't thank you enough for showing me a way out of the internet wilderness and rescuing me from the slough of despond.

Back to Work,

Walt Brown

Grizzly said...

They are but you will have to pass a visual inspection these days as they are weeding out spam sites. Don't apply for adsense until you have 10-20 legit (original content) posts up on the site. You don't want to look like you are just creating a blog for the purpose of slapping adsense on it. These days you can only get approved for a legit site so be sure to add an about me page and even a few blogroll links to legit sites in your niche.

Can u help me out please on how to do this. Again i want to thank you so very much for the simplicity and clarity of style of your write up, its helped me create a blog.
One more thing pls, how does google get to pay me? What sort of account do i need?

Grizzly said...

Joseph,

Google will pay you by cheque or direct deposit - you specify payment options in your adsense account.

The blogger dashboard has changed since I wrote the posts - Elements are now called Gadgets etc but the steps I outline hasn't changed. Just go to "Edit HTML" and edit the template as I outlined to add a Gadget above the post or header.

And I know,if I would continue to stick my nose here on your blog and would write good content,I will be Mr.G's priority.lol!

I am just happy!

Thanks for letting me share!

Hey Griz!

I stumbled on your blog after being influenced by a hubpage of someone who amuses in calling himself the internet idiot.

However after bumping into you and later on to mark, court and Vic he seems to suggest he is on the road to salvation.

Surely your amazing stuff here is a clear reflection of his oodles of confidence.

Among the many things that I wish to ask of you, the one which comes to mind immediately is the insecurity of a blogger blog. Imagine you make hundreds of them and just when you find them raking in the dollars, you are forced to shut shop because the big G found something wrong with you. The pain and the suffering of this can leave you speechless for years. Is there something you can tell me to sit up and reassure myself?

I love blogger blogs for the simplicity and the way they are accesible.

Not the insecurity though.

Cheers meanwhile on your fantastic spirit in this blog.

Goa,

I have never heard of G shutting down a legit site - ever. Why would they? If you lose a site it's for one reason only - it was spam and deserves to get shut down. Btw - people lose their spam WP sites all the time as well - G just de-indexes them.

hi Grizz,

I haven't read much yet of the lessons that you have hear..and its been a couple of months since i last visited this blog..
well, since Blogger has a new flagging system that can catch most auto-software trying to set up multiple accounts.
and that only 3-4 blogs can be made per account..
does is mean one account one niche..one niche that i want to create with 10 blogs i need to have 3 other account..
or one account can have multiple niche with a minimun or maximum of 3 blogs per niche..

im actualy saving some money now to give this a shot..with the free tools available..

"thanks for spilling it for us beginners"

thanks,
Vincent Ry

Hi Griz,

Thank you for the response

I want to thank you for the wonderful service done through your blog. While you may be making money through it , it being the necessary essence, your sense of sharing with the community of people is really an amazing trait hard to find in this seemingly open world of the internet which has all kinds of schemes and techniques to milk the lambs of the internet.

I noted that you said that there should be no more than 3-4 blogger blogs per google account. Also if there is more than one blog with the same niche and the same keywords, it should be in another account.

Being quite ignorant of all this I have gullibly made a few blogger blogs with same niches and worse, similar or same keywords . the number of blogs per account number to 10 - 12. Would this be classified as spam? If so what do I need to do to correct this lapse? delete the blogs and make same ones in different new accounts?

Also you said that two blogger blogs linking to each other would be considered as being done from the same IP address. Does that mean that a do-follow link from a another blogspot would be considered useless for my blogspot blog? And would it also upset google? ( thereby invoking the G wrath). Is linking between blogger hosted blogs a big no-no?

Thanks for your patience and kindness.

Goa,

If your blogs haven't been deleted by blogger then you are probably fine. Keep in mind that as long as all your blogs are legit (they contain real original content) and you aren't targeting the taboo spam keywords (Drugs/Pharma, Porn/sex, Forex, Loans/mortgages etc) you won't set off any flags. 3-4 blogs per account is just a guideline as you won't set off flags - you can have many more but be sure they are legit as someone is likely to review them and they will delete them if things are not on the up and up.

As for linking blogspot blogs to each other it is all relative. If your main blog has 4-5 blogspot links to it you will be fine. If you have a lot more blogspot links and don't have a large assortment of non-blogspot links as well then things will look un-natural and your links will be ignored. A legit site will have lots of links from numerous platforms and IP addresses. No legit site just has links from one source. Just use common sense - if it doesn't look natural then don't do it. The blog you are reading has hundreds of blogspot links to it but they are real and have been accumulated over three years as this blog has grown (they are all legit and come from my readers blogs) but this site also has thousands of links coming from all over the web which makes a few hundred links from blogspot completely reasonable. If I only had blogspot links then something would be wrong.

Hi Grizzly I stumbled upon your site a couple of days ago and ahve been devouring your content, I'm astonished. So today I decided to set up my first blog (in spanish, less competition for keywords there) following all the advice here, however I couldn't figure out how to make the title of my posts point to the main site as there is no link option in blogger. Instead the link points to the current post which is stupid.

Well that's it for now.
Have a great day

Pedro

Grizzly said...

Pedro,

You can link your post title to any URL you wish - there is a box located right under the Post Title box. Just enter the URL in there.

Pedro said...

Thanks so much Grizz, the link option under title box wasn't available because the 'show link fields' option (settings --> formatting) was set to No. Do'h. Just to show I didn't read carefully.

Many thanks, I quick question, link analysis tool can you recommend? Is www.linkdiagnosis.com any good?

Thanks

Grizzly said...

Pedro - sorry I'm not familiar with that one. I have used SEO Elite for several years and recently Market Samurai but there are numerous free tools available these days. I believe SEOBOOK.com has a free tool that seems to get good reviews. What you want is a tool that can break a sites links down to the keyword anchors they have pointing back at them and where those links come from. The sites with the "keyword" in the link are your real competition - ie. if a site has 1000 backlinks but only 10 links use the keyword then this isn't hard to beat. If the site has 200 links using the keyword then you are in for a battle. You will find a lot of sites have 1000's of links but very few keyword anchored links and hence are not as hard to beat as you first think given the huge amount of overall links.

Hi Griz! I have been a regular visitor of your blog because of your good content. I follow all of your suggestions and I can see improvements in my ranking. I have a new blog and I created it last October 1. I did all your SEO tips and I am so surprise to see that I got PR5 already, but my site is still not indexed. Do you have any suggestions Griz? I dont care about the PR.lol! I want my site to appear in the search engine as that what makes sense.

Thank you for always listening to us.

Best regards,

Tessah

Grizzly said...

Tessah,

You must be indexed or you wouldn't have PR - do you mean you aren't ranking for the keywords you are targeting? You might want to send me the URL so I can take a look.

Well, I just read your 10/01 email that said loans/mortgages was a taboo???? Why has not anyone with Google told me? That is what I know and I am advertising loans or mortgages, I am giving facts that people need to know. How is that wrong? Please see my email from yesterday and help me know what to do from here????

Also, Google has advertisements on my blog site? HELP, I don't want to do anything wrong but I did not know

Grizzly said...

Linda - relax.

Loans/Mortgages are not taboo in the sense of illegal or un-ethical. I use the term taboo in regards to how Google tends to treat sites targeting those niches - most spam sites target loans, mortgages, pharmacy, porn, gambling etc. If your site is a legit site then not to worry - you will just have to jump more hurdles to get ranked well for loans or mortgages than someone with a flooring company would to get ranked well for the term flooring.

Didn't mean to scare you. There are plenty of legit loan companies online who rank well in Google - it just takes a lot of authority links from other legit companies to convince Google that the sites are real and not scams.

Linda Todd said...

Grizzly, I just read th posting regulations and it does not specifically mention loans or Mortgage Loans. I am not promoting anything, I am explaining what the process is and what to look out for so that all applicant receive what they need? NO ONE HAS SLAPPED MY HANDS YET BUT I HAVEN'T GOTTEN ANY READERS YET EITHER, IT DOESN'T SEEM....I AM SO FRUSTRATED! Thanks

Linda Todd said...

Thanks so much, I thought with searching, I had picked something hard here. Also, my first comment, I made a mis-quote, I am not advertising loan/mortgages. Just giving information to help people.

Should I do another blog and link it to this one? I don't know how to link???? I guess you are laughing by now but I think I am doing pretty good for an old woman!!! HA! AND remember I know a lot of things because I have lived longer than you!!!! HA! again!

Linda Todd said...

Grizzly, I just have to tell you this. I did some searches for mortgage issues like, mortgage modification, mortgage facts etc. I knew there were a lot of "mortgage" information and articles, but guess I didn't understand the magnitude of trying to write and promote my writing with SEO. I do now, but, let me tell you what did happen; when I input Best Mortgage Practices....my blog was first/on first page...but that is probably not what will pull the best???? At least it is there.

Thanks Grizzly, I think I have done quite some survey and research on making money online and it seems to me that, its just a few out there that really understand what it takes without sweet-talking you into buying a product to get you quick bucks off the internet. Well I must confess, how do you prove to people that you know some stuff? the Google search says it all.

Thanks for the post. It is really quite an information. Why don't you shift to a custom domain name? Your Google rankings are also very good. Neway, thanks once again.

Project Payday - A Legit Method to Make Money at Home

I have included Project Payday on my blog for all of my readers who write in asking if there are any legit online programs that they can use to make some quick money. Project Payday is not a get rich quick scheme - it is more like a work at home job. You don't need a blog or website as it involves getting paid to try out trial offers from online advertisers. There is work to this but you can realistically earn a couple of hundred dollars a day if you want to put in the effort.

I have written several posts about this and suggest you start with this one. Project Payday

Unfortunately Project Payday is only available to American users at this time. Their sister program is still available to users in the US, Canada, UK and Australia. (free to join as well) 7 Figure Income Online

CashCrate is another similar program (you get paid to take trial offers for products, services or completing online surveys etc.) Cashcrate does accept people world wide and they have a decent selection for Canadian and UK residents. If you are American then you will benefit the most as you have the most offers to choose from. Btw - it's free to join.

For comparative purposes the stats below reflect my actual earnings with Cashcrate.

A Little Heart to Heart

If you have made it this far down the page then I assume you might just be serious about learning how to make a real sustainable living online - as opposed to the thousands of visitors I see daily looking for that "get rich quick" miracle that really doesn't happen without a winning lottery ticket.

You have probably figured out by now that you aren't going to find the answer in a $47 ebook or by following your favorite twit on twitter. The fact is many of you are still wondering how this plain free hosted Blogger blog dominates the rankings on the search engines - right? Did you find this site by typing in "make money online" in Google?

If you did then you are halfway to learning the secret to making money online - you need targeted traffic from the search engines (for any niche you pick) and once you have that, you can sell them what they are looking for. Sounds simple and on paper it is - actually dominating the search engines is the hard part. It takes time and you do need to understand keywords and anchor text links. You can spend time on this site and sift through my posts to learn this or you can do yourself a favor and pony up one buck and test drive Court's Keyword Academy Crash Course for a month and learn just why I rank number 1 in the search engines.

This isn't another waste of money or time - just an honest answer for the few of you willing to do the work and who really do want to make a long term sustainable living online. Read my blog from back to front or try a more focused approach with Court - either way you will not be disappointed.

Cheers

Griz
